Don it’s not magnesium on the Chinese saw’s it’s Chineseium it’s a new element that the Chinese found it’s”stronger and lighter “than natural elements and we know well if ya know ya know I wanted to personally thank you Don for taking the time out of your life to share your knowledge and expertise in chainsaws there’s getting to be less and less of people with the caliber of experience you have no schooling can teach the experience and knowledge you possess and there is only one way to gain that kind of knowledge and that’s to ask questions and getting your hands dirty and trail and error Once again THANK YOU
One step in front of the other my friend. Life keeps us in check whenever possible. PS. Your camera presence has dramatically increased. Great work DW🦾☀️🔥
I’ve cut in northern BC in winter at -30 and had those starter pawls freeze open. You had to take your ax and use the wooden handle give it a gentle tap and the pawls would click free
Both my 440 Chinese clone saw and 372 clone saw are magnesium cased, I was completely surprised!!! I dripped vinegar on a bare spot of the case, magnesium will start to fizz, aluminum will not. Anyways, there’s a handy trick for ya on checking for magnesium…although much less exciting.
We used to chew up a little piece of a matchbook cover and jam that in the governor. If you didn’t older saws the little spring that pushes on a ball bearing in the governor would get weak and allow gas to flood a bit. Plug it off and learn how to tune the hi speed
I wish you would have talked about the piston rings in the 2100, depending on the year there are pairs of thin rings and others have the thick rings. I’ve been looking to no luck for the thin rings for my two 1983 models. Ended up ordering a piston with rings on line, well see
I have a pretty good collection of 298 and 2100 parts. I need a cylinder to build one finally. Unfortunately they are basically unobtainable at this point. I have a new old stock case and nos 298 recoil i wanna build something nice someday

I used an aftermarket Piston and Cylinder kit from The Duke on a 2100 milling saw. Works great.
I will check those out
I could watch 2100 stuff all day long.
