    This week we're looking at a riff that caused me all kinds of problems when I learned it way back in the early 90s. The opening riff to the song Holy Wars The Punishment Due by Megadeth.
    This riff is played by the great David Ellefson. Dave uses a pick and this song is pretty much a masterclass in tight, metal bass playing.
    Enjoy!

    0:41 I don't know why, but this part sounds like it would fit as a doom ost in the 90s

    Yes! Finally! Thank you for this! I'm currently learning Death - Spirit Crusher -- Fantastic metal bass line. More like this please!

    • @johnnycanamaso9361
      @johnnycanamaso9361 6 лет назад +4

      Difficult bass line to play because the fretting hand does a lot of work both in finger independence and shifting. Nonetheless, a great song to play! I wish you luck on mastering that song!

    • @kahwigulum
      @kahwigulum 6 лет назад

      It's not too bad a song in those regards. There are some parts where the pinky is working overtime and yes I agree shifting the hand is key. But most of the passages are repetitive arpeggios. The second half of the song is just a repeat of the first half of the song. I thought it'd be harder to play because Death plays it so well, but it's not a difficult song to learn. It's more intermediate than difficult. I would say watch out for tempo and rhythm, because there are multiple points where the tempo changes and the rhythms need to be maintained at higher/lower speeds. I've also found it easier to play on my five-string than on my four-string but I'd say my four-string is more fun to play in general than my five.

    • @johnnycanamaso9361
      @johnnycanamaso9361 6 лет назад +2

      kahwigulum You're correct, it's more intermediate to say the least. The way I approached it, however, was from watching Andriy Vasylenko, a metal bassist from Ukraine (s/o to Andriy) who is a big fan of Metallica. Like him, I play finger-style bass, though his fretting hand makes these intricacies I thought were interesting compared to other bass covers I've seen.

    • @kahwigulum
      @kahwigulum 6 лет назад +1

      Haha yea, that's who I saw do it first and who I emulated. I was going to mention Andriy in my message but didn't think anyone would know who I was referring to!

    I want to see a bassist play this without a pick. I’m certain some lunatic can do the entire song like a joke, but I’ve never seen it done without a pick.
    Picks definitely do give different tone, plus palm muting is more easily conceivable.

      @@metaldave08096 I bet. You absolutely can be faster with fingers. Use index middle and ring finger like a machine gun. That’s crazy, bass is harder than guitar. I bought one years ago for fun thinking it’ll be tough to get used to but I have some background in guitar playing, I had calluses. My calluses were nothing on those bass strings, I thought it wouldn’t be an issue, it was almost like playing guitar again after taking months and months off.

    Always greet to meet a fellow traveler. Seeing Jason Newsted perform live in Moscow in the early 90’s (on TV) instantly got me hooked. My style is significantly different now 30+ years later, but I still like to revisit my metal roots from time to time.

    This is one of those bass lines that I always tried to get but couldnt get completely. The opening part is what gets me so if I couldn't get the beginning right there was no way I was gunna learn the rest. I tried doing it on guitar (I do this quite a lot due to the lighter strings whenever I struggle with a tricky bassline) just to get the essence and did quite well. Thanks to this vid im gunna give it another stab man thanks a lot
