If you press L all linked geometry gets selected which is under the mouse at the moment, no matter if you select something beforehand or not - actually if your mouse is over some geometry which is not connected to the already selected part, you will end up with that first selected face and some other part of the mesh (where your mouse was) selected. Ctrl + L selects geometry linked to the already selected face, no matter where your mouse is.
