Nice simple mod! Thanks for sharing the link. The only thing I change is the DYI procedure. As a retired automotive technician, I've seen both wire connections failed numerous times over the 40+ that I've worked on vehicles. I'd solder those connections ( specially on off road veh because of vibration) if I have to put my job on the line or my own veh. Overtime, I've seen those wire tap connector actually completely cut the main wire. You are familiar of your own car . You can get away with it. Thanks for sharing the idea. I'm sure this kit can be adapted to any veh with non keyless entry with power lock. Those two white wires just change its polarities when you press the lock or unlock buttons. With this said, You can even rig this kit to lock or unlock any accy like safe, exterior tool box, etc. All you need is an actuator to actuate a fabricated rod lock.

I installed this same unit on my 2001 Tundra SR5 access cab the other day and thought I'd share my findings! Oddly, the Tundra's lock switches are ground-triggered instead of positive-triggered like on the Tacoma.
    * Red goes to constant power. I used one of the wires for my trailer brake controller.
    * Black, yellow, and yellow/black get spliced together and go to ground. I used one of the bolts near the interior fuse box.
    * White gets tapped into the white/green wire coming out the front of the interior fuse box.
    * White/black gets tapped into the red/yellow wire coming out of the front of the interior fuse box.
I had room to stash the box directly below the steering column. I haven't yet wired up the flashers but I'll do that next. The brown wires will need to go to green/black and green/yellow coming out of the back of the interior fuse box.
Note: in my first attempt I spliced the orange and orange/black wires into my red wire but this caused my door switches to stop working. I believe this is because the trigger splices are further "downstream" than the door switches so the constant power from the orange and orange/black wires prevents the door switches from grounding the circuit. I'm confident that leaving the orange and orange/black wires unused will fix this problem.

I'm going crazy trying to get this working on my 2001 Tundra. I seem to have the same kit and wired up the same way. I've confirmed all connections are solid. Ground is in place.
Other than a different 12v constant I followed what you outlined exactly with no luck:
      * Red goes to constant power. I've tapped into the 12v white/red near the fuse box (confirmed this is sending power as the LED flashes on the fob module when locked and stops flashing when unlocked)
      * Black, yellow, and yellow/black are spliced together and go to ground. Using a bolt behind the fuse box that is clearly a ground point for other items on the vehicle.
      * White is tapped into the white/green wire coming out the front of the interior fuse box.
      * White/black is tapped into the red/yellow wire coming out of the front of the interior fuse box.
And nothing.... if I tap either of the orange wires to my ground I can lock and unlock manually via those wires, but nothing via the key fob. Any thoughts? Would love some help here! Any thoughts on what the issue could be? Could you double check your setup?

Auto Locksmith here. I did this mod to my 1996 SR5 Tacoma. Has power locks stock/no keyless.
The only way to program new remotes to this unit *that LOOK OEM* would be finding universal AND rewritable OEM style fobs. These can be found on Amazon/Ebay (try VVDI or Xhorse products, Autel as well). You would have to set the FCC# on the universal remote to the FCC of the same designation as the fobs that come in this kit if that info can be found (what can you say for China-brand?!)
Not an easy feat, but do-able.

if the wiring on this kit fails, and you're inside the truck with the doors locked, it would be impossible to open the doors, correct? there'd be no way to unlock the doors without the power locks unless i'm mistaken. want to do this mod but have had a door lock actuator fail on me, forcing me to get out the passenger side. just want to make sure i'm not missing something with this concern
