Gene Tierney was also well known for treating everyone on set with kindness . Didn’t matter who you were. Too many things in here that are stretching true to fit narrative.
She was also arguably the most beautiful woman in classic Hollywood
I absolutely disagree with your assessment of Anne Baxter. She and Bette Davis were good friends and only one of four actresses that Bette enjoyed working with. Fritz and the Oscars made a video talking about Bette Davis and Anne Baxter and there was NO drama on the set.
Anne was no saint... she was very aggressive in her career. Bette saw in herself in Anne.
@@alfredbonnabel7022I’m not disagreeing that she was “competitive”, what actor/actress wouldn’t be??? I have an issue with the idea that she was “difficult” or a supposed feud with Bette. Bette greatly admired Anne and got along well on the set of All About Eve.
BD was rude to Celeste Holm. When CH came on the set the first day she said Good morning to everyone. BD made a snide remark about having good manners.

Many of these rivalries were invented for the tabloids.
Laurence Oliver wasn't known for being particularly 'nice'.

Olivier's performance in Marathon Man was exceptional because of his underplaying intense scenes. He was particularly menacing.

It was not Joan Fontaine who brushed Olivia off when she won the Oscar for SUSPICION. It was the other way round when Olivia won one of her two awards who turned away from Joan when she went to congratulate her; Fontaine had made an unflattering remark some time before about Olivia's husband, and Olivia was extremely angry. There is a photo of the event the moment that has been around from the moment this happened, Fontaine with her hand outstretched, Livvy turning around ignoring her. It's true there was always rivalry between the sisters, however, but that must in great part be their mother's fault, who for most of her life favored Olivia over her younger sister and fueled their rivalry.

Otto Premimger was said to be a nightmare to both mem and women.
@@jonhinson5701 I read that Preminger was a tyrant on the set. He was one of the guest villains on the Batman series. Adam West said he was never asked back. In 1948 he took over as director for a Betty Grable musical-comedy called That Lady in Ermine. The original director Ernst Lubitsch died one week into production. Preminger took over and the movie didn't turn out like they had hoped it would. Preminger is not a comedy director. Grable didn't like him. The original director could have made this movie much better. I love Betty Grable but this was not one of my favorite films of hers.
Gene Tierney didn't intentionally make life difficult or problematic for other , life was far more difficult and problematic her in a time when her psychological condition was little understtod and had not effective treatment even when a diagnosis of bipolar disorder lead to her being hospitalised in 1955.
The Hollywood environment brings out the worst characteristics in human nature, which is not too admirable in the first place.

I totally disagree about Mae clarke. Her first marriage was actually with Lew Brice. Also, Her relationship with Jimmy Cagney, as they remained friends throughout her life, when he was nominated for lifetime achievement award, she stood up on his behalf.

All these actresses were strong willed, talented and managed to have outsized careers at a time when women weren’t allowed careers, let alone big ones. Ambitious? Heck yeah. But if they were to become legendary in the business they had to fight everything and everyone. Some even paved the way for the breakup of the male dominated, over bearing and hyper controlling studio system.
Zsa Zsa was the precursor to today’s Kim Kardashion. Famous for being famous. And naked. Meh.
Anne Baxter seems to have inherited a lot of traits from her grandfather Frank Lloyd Wright. In "Where Love Has Gone' Bette Davis was also not too happy about playing Susan Hayward's mother since she was only 9 years older.
Baxter was so wonderful in Razors Edge.

@@elaineproffitt1032Would you believe Zanuck at 20th century fox wanted Betty Grable to play the part that Anne Baxter did? Grable refused. She was well established as a musical comedy star and didn't mind sticking to that image. She was the biggest female box office star of the 1940s.
Fontaine spoke with great admiration for Hitchcock, but that does not serve the peddling of untruths and gossip.

The over inflated egos and ridiculous entitlement among certain celebrities is incredible. The higher up the celebrity/entertainment ladder one goes the greater the ego. It even happens at the Community Theater and Community College levels! I saw it first hand in a few plays in which I participated as a bit player in both. INCREDIBLE egos, even at that level!
You're so right about community theatre, and these lower level performers are not as adept at hiding their small-town egos, obviously a carry over from high school histrionics -- they never really grew up.

I love the way the narrator is telling us how poorly these actresses were treated, then acting like it's the actresses fault they are "difficult". Women can't fix someone else being rude or a jerk. Are actresses difficult if they cannot fix the director or their co-stars?

Flynn liked Olivia but he was more like a mischievous brother sort and she wasn't appreciative of his jests. Flynn wrote an autobiography that tells you if he could and she would have him, he would have married her.

Why can’t the narrator pronounce names correctly. It makes it obvious he’s just reading without knowledge of the material.
With regards to Gloria Graham, her supposed awfulness brings me around to my lifelong inability to understand people who are describes as "difficult." I couldn't understand why someone would be seen as difficult, and if they were, wouldn't they know this about themselves and try to fix it? I learned for real how this works when I worked in TV. One of the main actors in one show was an old movie star - a legend. She was an angel to work with. 100% class,. Her costar, a relative nobody, was "difficult" but totally unaware of it. It's okay to be difficult if you have talent like Gloria Graham, but when you stink, you'd better correct your behavior or you ain't going anywhere in a small town like Holllywood.
Gloria reminds me of actress Ann Heche.
Barbara Stanwyck would be my guess for the person you mentioned.

OK, Gene Tierney let’s go with that first. Edith Head never designed for Gene Tierney her husband Oleg Cassini designed many of her films. Otto Preminger consider Tierney his muse. when he was directing Advice and Consent he fought to keep her on the film. Since the insurance company did not want to insure her since she had had problems with her mental health. Both Dana Andrews and Cornell Wilde were great friends of Tierney. They never had a problem with her on set. in fact on a talkshow later on in life with Merv Griffin, Cornell Wilde was sitting next to Tierney and could not stop praising her. The story of her being difficult and aloof during the filming of Leave her to Heaven sounds suspiciously like the story child actor Daryl Hickman had with Tierney. He said she wasn’t very friendly. Tierney was very careful about make up because she had an allergic reaction so she didn’t wear much make up in-films. Never heard anything about her being that self-conscious. There’s a great story of her when she confronted Ernest Lubitch on a film
Lubitsch was a tyrant on the set, the most demanding of directors. After one scene, which took from noon until five to get, I was almost in tears from listening to Lubitsch shout at me. The next day I sought him out, looked him in the eye, and said, 'Mr. Lubitsch, I'm willing to do my best but I just can't go on working on this picture if you're going to keep shouting at me.' 'I'm paid to shout at you', he bellowed. 'Yes', I said, 'and I'm paid to take it - but not enough.' After a tense pause, Lubitsch broke out laughing. From then on we got along famously.

These are all very talented actresses, some with major issues, clashing with often equally temperamental co-stars and directors. Isn't that one thing we love about classic Hollywood?

We lived in a community she resided in. I think she's a gem.

I was born in 1948 and grew up watching most of these great films from the 1930s and 40s, "The Golden Age of Hollywood" which influenced my career as a professional NYC fashion illustrator in the late 1960s and 70s. Some of them sound like they had undiagnosed Bi-polar formerly manic depression with their mood swings. A known fact is that many artists/creatives suffer from Bi-polar! A great many are known today as malignant narcissists, i.e. airs of entitlement, manipulation, lies and a sense of grandiosity, the need for attention, applause and awards or "somatic narcissists", obsessed with their face and bodies i.e. actress Jane Fonda comes to mind! I was married to one, my malignant narcissistic/sociopathic, real "Dr. Jekyll/"Mr Hyde" husband for 42 years and know the traits! Ann Baxter was also the granddaughter of the late American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and might have been why she seems to have an out of whack ego and was difficult! So was her grandfather, it's "epigenetic"! A real malignant narc! So, little do we know what goes on behind the scenes or what the studio heads tried to hide and suppress for years! Have known about the late great tempermental Bette Davis's feuds and Hayward? Must have been partly her fiery Irish red hair and temperament! Had to been hard to work with and live with i.e.hence, their divorces! Thought they could change the script? The screenwriters do the writing, the directors do what they try to do best, direct! Not usually, the actors/actresses's job as they cross boundaries and step on other professionals toes! smdh♥♥♥♥ May they all rest in peace~
Was it sometimes the roles they played that influenced their personalities, or did their personalities more often than not influence the performances they delivered. As well, the strain o working in Hollywood could not have been a picnic.

I noticed no one could get along with Bette Davis. Even though I'm sure it wasn't just Bette Davis' personality but, let's give credit where credit is due. She couldn't work well with any other female actresses. Sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats to me.

Gah! So many mispronounced names and titles. Bette Davis name is pronounced Betty, not Bet. Beau Geste is pronounced as Beau Jest, not Beau Guest. Jus two examples that made me quit watching it.

Bette Davis was a professional. Always on time, knew her lines. She also frowned on bad scripts and bad directors. The best actress of all time in my opinion still.
