My favorite movies are the ones in the pre-Code era. The difference in quality between pre and post-Code eras is amazing. I understand why they created the Code, but it came at a high price. The world was cheated.

So, oddly enough these films were played on continuous loop on the weekends on local broadcast stations. There was no "censorship" and no "age appropriate" warnings.. This was the 1970's and 80's. PBS actually broadcast the "uncensored" version of Caligula.
Caligula? That’s insane. I’ve never seen the film but I know what it’s about. I’ve heard some things. Can’t imagine coming across it as a kid. I remember my dad telling me how a station forgot to censor the phone number scene in Black Christmas and being shocked.
Thank you for commenting! There’s a lot to look into as far as censorship is concerned. I can imagine it had a huge grip on American Society and possibly held it back.
This is such a great video essay. I am studying this era in Hollywood, it's my favorite from "classic Hollywood"
Thank you! I need to do more videos on this era. It’s Hollywoods most interesting period for sure. So much to dive into.

The lost Convention City in 1933. The sequel still exists, but not as a lot of innuendos.

And hardcore stag films were being produced underground and distributed illegally back then
One has think on how once the Hayes Code was enforced how it effect American society as a whole.

I think the Hays code was a good thing.
While it had its upside, think Casablanca it was unfortunately racist and misogynistic in nature. Among other things.
