Thanks to George Hunt and others who have put these episodes onto RUclips. I have been searching for years, mainly looking for DVDs or even VHS but never found them. We used to watch this with my mother-in-law back in the late seventies/early eighties when they were aired on TV in the UK but after that time they simply disappeared. All the characters are so good but I think our favourite has to be Mother Dexter. The humour crossed the Atlantic so well, which can't be said for that many American sitcoms. So, so funny, great entertainment.

The original idea was for her to throw her hat up in the air and a seagull snatches it. Sadly, it wasn’t used.

Lars did have a Swedish accent Phyllis imitated it many times on the Mary Tyler Moore Show

Now THAT'S funny and very 'Vaudeville'. Humor of that nature has since been lost. David Wayne was a wonderful performer and could do anything, comedy, drama, even singing and dancing.

I agree, a lot of that innocent humor has been lost too; This comedy series is from 1975.

With the late Great David Wayne as the Medium. All-around versatile performer, among his many noted roles were Marilyn Monroe's co-star in several movies, the confused working class husband of Joanne Woodward's character in 'The Three Faces of Eve" (1957), the first and best Digger Barnes on the original series, 'Dallas', and singing and dancing with Judy Garland on one of her television specials, David Wayne was a show biz mainstay.

It's 1:32am. Kicked my wife out of the bed after the usual stupid arguments! Found Phyllis and am laughing myself to death (no pun intended)!

There is one episode where Phylis spoke like Lars and repeated something he once said.................she used the same Swedish accent. So........

On MTM she told the story of Lars turning to her and saying 'Phyllis, jog har sluta.' Also in that Swedish accent.

I just don't think "Phyllis" was that well-written. I always got the feeling that Phyllis just became the butt of her own bad joke. The character of Phyllis needed Mary and Rhoda to be whole. Without them, she did not work. The odd thing is that the first season was more successful than the second but I think the second was better. In the first, Cloris won a Golden Globe and got an Emmy nomination and the ratings were good. Then they ditched the photography studio and WISELY moved Phyllis to the city supervisor's office. But the ratings tanked for some reason. By the end of it, Bess is married and pregnant and that pretty well finished her off. Judith Lowry had died Mother Dexter made the show way better and funnier than it would've otherwise been. So, it concluded and left the airwaves at the same time Mary's show did. Thankfully "Rhoda" was still on the air for a couple more years and "Lou Grant" was amazing. Both were much better spinoffs.

@@Vejur9000 thank u! Phyllis is not a show that gets a lot of discussion anymore except maybe here on RUclips. I wasn't alive when it was on, and I don't know anyone else (friends or family) who are even really familiar with it, including my own parents who loved "All in the Family" and other shows. They never heard of "Lou Grant" and only very vaguely remember MTMS and even Rhoda. And why? I believe it's because of what I said earlier - it wasn't strong enough or written well enough. I should add, Cloris was often dissatisfied with things and I heard (the GREAT director) Jimmy Burrows talk one time about directing episodes of Phyllis. He said "Cloris would try a scene like five different ways, and then she'd want us to use the best one and I was like, 'well, we don't have time to do it five different ways.' They did have some good episodes over the 2 seasons but they were few and far between. They had the resources - the actors were obviously good but it's like it never really took off. Some of my favorite ones are the later ones with Carmine Caridi and John Lawlor. The one with Jerry Stiller guesting was a real kick in the pants, I love it! As I say, Season 2 was better than Season 1 but with Bess marrying and Judith Lowry dying, that nailed the coffin shut on "Phyllis".

Phyllis really isn't funny. But her supporting cast! That's a different story.
