  • In this first edition of Scott Grows a Kiwi Vine, I take a store-bought kiwi fruit and remove and clean the seeds. This is all in order to begin germinating the kiwi fruit seeds.

Very cool! I've been growing a Kiwi from seed for a couple years now, I germinated it the exact same way. I may recommend sprinkling a bit of cinnamon over the seeds to avoid any mold. The seeds grow fast! I recently pruned up my vine on my channel and its doing great, it should be coming out of dormancy in the next month or so. Good luck with your kiwi seed germination!

I tried to grow some last year, they sprouted and then died. #ISuck

Something I learned recently about avocados is that selfed Hass seedlings (grown from seeds of two Hass parents) have a ~46% chance of mutations that will lead to the death of the tree within ~3 months. (However, the paper found that only about 25% of pollinations in a commercial Hass plantation with B-type trees as pollinators were self-pollinations.) Anyway, this has made me more aware of potential genetic issues with store-bought fruit. Is this something you worry about with the kiwis (or the avocados, for that matter)? For reference, the paper was titled "Outcrossing between ‘Bacon’ Pollinizers and Adjacent ‘Hass’ Avocado Trees and the Description of Two New Lethal Mutants".

You need to grow a male (does not fruit) near the female or artificially pollenate in order to produce any fruit. Sometimes the male will flower well before the female flowers and result in small and odd shape fruit, therefore good pollination produces good fruit. Well worth the challenge and they store well. Good luck 😀

You’re right! As someone who’s growing avocado trees, I’m no stranger to single-gendered flowers (though avocados are weirder!)

    Hey nice video,
    I have 2 question.
1.Its my first time grafting a tree and i didn't had grafting tape so I used electrical tape is it okay ?
    2. I planted a lemon tree from seed and the tree is 1/1.5 years old is it possible grafting in that tree?
    What's the Grafting period

You need to put the seeds in the fridge for a month first. I did not and i have very bad results.

Depends on the variety - I’ve germinated a few batches of kiwi seeds over the years and I’ve not given them a cold stratification and had pretty reasonable success.

It’s not that kind of video 😂 I’m doing this series as a “Patreon exclusive”, but it’s the kind of video I’ve been making for years where I track things growing periodically.
