This guy is literally the Bob Ross of Midwest emo
well that's a brand new sentence
boots WILL IIIII, DIVIIIIIDE AND FALL APART
@@ShannonsCompany klone!
@@payphones lmfaoooooo
I don't think that is how you are supposed to use the word literally but I get your point.
"YOUSICIAN IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN" as I begin to watch a free tutorial that teaches me how to play the music I like
Yousician is pretty trash ngl
🤣🤣🤣
Yep lol they make you commit to 12 months after the trial wtf lol.
@@andynewen yeah and its like 150 bucks
Fox i think its better to use Yousician AND watching this type of videos. I learned a lot with Yousician like theory and other technics like how to use my pinkie, um double stops, etc.
I am ready to make a whole lofi album using just these chords
Yo Shrampy I would like to hear it lol
For a good lofi persona You gotta give yourself a catchy name that's a misspelled adjective (Demyur) or verb (imajin).
Yo Shrampy cringe comment
you should call it American Football
No it’s “americ
anfootball”
I read it as “Twinky” and didn’t question it as it was a video about emo chords
same
This is literally a different language. No fucking clue what is going on in here but it sounds good.
Kyle Thomas Same lmao
Not a different language, an expanded vocabulary. If you learn about intervals it's not too bad to understand it
Dont get what you cant understand???
Hahaha yeah I get what you mean. Ive been playing guitar for 12 years now but I never got around to taking a theory class (self taught before youtube even had all these helpful vids) but I do somewhat understand whats gping on here, but like anything, it takes time to finally understand.
Took me 4 months to finally understand welding when I was in trade school. And about 6 months to finally understand what was happening in class when I was learning electrical.
This is no different. Take a theory class and it'll take a while but you will understand eventually. Even faster if you already play guitar 😎👍
To be honest it's pretty simple. I dont mean that to sound like an ass, but there are only 12 notes and once you understand harmony, making the chords isn't all that hard. Naming them is a bit more heady, but honestly it's not necessary and it's just a simple matter of knowing the patterns and how to name them. It might seen unaproachably technical at first, but it's not all that hard in the end.
Trevor: *talking about really specific music stuff that I havent heard of*
Me: show me the twinkly doot doots
Some theory info that might help:
A basic chord is constructed of 3 notes. It is also referred to as a triad, with obvious reason.
An example of this, the C Major Triad is CEG.
The three notes in a triad correspond to their scale degrees/intervals.
Scales generally have 7 notes. In the case of C that is CDEFGAB.
The scale can also be described in numbers, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
CEG as a number/scale degree: 1,3,5
There are a lot of other kinds of chords that tend to be the basic triad but with stuff added.
For instance, a 7th chord uses the scale degrees 1,3,5,7
A 9th is 1,3,5,7,9
An add 9 is 1,3,5, and 9 (just the 9 is added to the basic triad)
Knowing the interval relationship between a pair of two notes is very useful
The intervals represent all 12 notes on a piano, or every fret on a guitar up to it's octave.
Distance from root to interval:
0 = unison (open string)
1 = minor 2nd (first fret)
2= Major 2nd (second fret)
3= minor 3rd (third fret)
4= Major 3rd (4th fret)
5= perfect 4th (5th fret)
6= flat 5 (aka tritone) (6th fret)
7= Perfect 5th (7th fret)
8= minor 6th (8th fret)
9= Major 6th (9th fret)
10= minor 7th (10th fret)
11= Major 7th (11th fret)
(12)= Octave (12th fret)
In terms of a standard 7 note scale, it is easy to figure out what higher numbers are.
Ex: A 9th is really just the 2nd but an octave higher (7 + 2 =9), 8 being the octave.
Inversions:
Both two note intervals and chord voicings can be inverted.
With two notes in a scale, you can go up to the interval, but also go down from the root.
The way you can figure out how far to go down for an inversion is to make the two notes add to 9
Ex: The inversion of a 5th is down a 4th. 5+4=9
It is important to note that the minor and majors must create a neutral.
For instance, major 3rd up is inverted to a minor 6th down
Chord inversions are a little bit different:
If the standard triad is 1,3,5,
First inversion = 3,5,1 (moving the root to the top)
Second inversion = 5,1,3 (move the new base note to the top, or the starting top note to the base)
It is very useful to know standard interval shapes on a fret board
The shapes are standard among the first 4 strings (EADG)
The following B and E strings are shifted down a fret
Standard Fretboard interval shapes:
minor 3rd = one string up, two frets down
Major 3rd = one string up, one fret down
Perfect 4th = one string up, same fret
Perfect 5th = one string up two frets up
Octave = two strings up, two frets up
The rest of the interval shapes are fairly easy to figure out by moving a certain number of frets away from one of the above shapes.
Ex: Finding a Minor 6th is as easy as going one fret up from a Perfect 5th. See the chromatic (all 12 notes) intervals above.
wow holy shit, this is incredibly helpful. thank you!
i just learned more from a comment on youtube then i did in my highschool guitar class
You are are a fucking legend!
Thanks
H u h
I just spent a whole hour transferring all those chords on to my ukulele. I will make sure to use these chords in future ukulele compositions.
Lora Coggins no.
what do they look like on the uke? im not good enough to learn it all myself
Lora Coggins can’t wait till the ukulele fad dies 🙄
@@defstrikem2743 same
uke haters need to chill, as long as you're not the annoying person that plays their uke everywhere they go for attention you're fine
1:14 WHEN THE SUMMER ENDSSS
OMG I knew it sounded familiar. Such a classic..
cant believe i paid for guitar lessons when i was younger
in person lessons are good because your instructor can help you improve on things like posture that doesn't really translate through video
Being self taught is overrated. Good for you if you can. But RUclips lacks structure and continuity with guitar lessons
Frozen PizzaBagel agreed. best way to learn is through 1 on 1 in person lessons with a friend or mentor
@@maxfrombeyblade I agree. However, RUclips can be great for learning specific songs.
i guess the reason i say this is influenced by the fact that i took advantage of my public school systems music courses and already knew simple theory before taking lessons, so really all i learned was technique and chord shapes- and i feel like i still have a strange technique and am comfortable with it. what lessons also did for me was show me a lot of new and interesting music, im very grateful for my teacher getting me into great music, his name is dan and when he taught me he was in a band called emma ate the lion. he played the bass and sang he inspired me to work harder than if i just watched videos online. *slowly takes comment back lol*
This is actually a cover of American Football LP1
Alex Taylor he really nailed the vocals and everything
@@christiandill4758 LEEETSS JUST FORGEEETTT
Thank you! These chords are so pretty. AND YOU ARE A LEGEND FOR LISTING THE KEYS THEY CAN BE PLAYED IN!!!!!!!
Many of these chords were used by the Cocteau twins and some other first wave dreampop bands in the late eighties and early ninties.
The Archivist - Music & More Shoegaze came after and was influenced heavily by the first wave dreampop bands (the whole 4AD and early Creation records scenes).
Those chords straight up sound like American Football
Mark Renton but what does that mean
Khersy oh my god no
@@khersy
American Football the band, not the sport
It’s the Ema7 at 1:03 that’s the final chord to the summer ends by American football

After watching this tutorial, I feel like I can play for the next 10 hours without getting bored.
This is not just good for emo, it can be good for any genre. Thanks for showing me some chords I have never played before.
Watching this makes me realize how much of a sadboy sucker I am for these sounds. Every chord has me imagining a break up or the death of a family pet or some shit
Love how you show what keys the chords work well in.
LOVE the sound of that Ema9no3#11 at the 14th fret. Soooooo gorgeous! I love how Major 9 chords sound-I need to explore those types of chords more.
Love these videos, it’s super helpful for me and actually helps me understand the theory behind chords more as someone who kinda struggles with learning.
Thanks for all the time spent Trevor! Appreciate it!
So much practical knowledge in 10 minutes ! Awesome video thanks 👌🏻
This video appeared in my YT recommendations, and I clicked through and found an AWESOME channel! It's clear you put a lot of work into your videos. Your delivery is clear and succinct, all the accompanying information is provided without getting in the way, and at the end of the video I didn't just feel like I learned a few things, I felt like I'd attended a really engaging lecture!

These chords are beautiful. I draw so much more emotion from these!!!
Some chords feel happy or mysterious and I'm so excited to use these in music!
Oh man, thank you so much. I am usually a cigar box guitar player but I love to play some acoustic guitars every now and then. These are the kinds of chords I want to play and hear. So beautiful! Again, thank you! This is very very helpful and expands my knowledge on some chords, I appreciate this content.
Been in a bit of a creative drought and this is what I needed. Thanks man!
I surprisingly recognize most chords after learning like 5 boy pablo songs
Boy Pablo the original Chicanemo
I'm learning music right now and you are such a big help. You're calming, so its easier to listen to you. That sounds weird af but yes.
I used a lot of this chords without even knowing it, thank you so much for the video. I still haven’t learned how to make chords or used the names for them. I learned my music theory from ear and you have been really putting pieces together thanks.
Actually really helpful stuff , adding in what keys they fit to is also handy aswell
This is exactly what I have been looking for for the longest time, thank you so much!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! Dreamy, open chords are my go to and I’m always looking for more! I’m self taught and don’t know much theory for guitar but this is very helpful!

Thank you for the teachings bro. Just getting back into playing and I've been really into the midwest emo sound. I'm glad its not as hard to play as I thought it would be too.
I've been so down during practice today because theres just so many chords I cannot play yet. I can play these and they're beautiful. Thank you, this was much needed today

Just found your channel today and I'm very happy I did. Your vids have provided me with tools for improvisation, inspiration, and motivation. Now I can't help but fantasize about forming a post-black, shoegaze, atmospheric metal band hah. Thanks for your work and please keep pumping out material. Exceptional channel.
Wow.....just found your music on Spotify and now I stumble across your RUclips channel.....Awesome!!!
This dude is amazing…making it look so easy
This is a great video! It's a suggestion for chords you can use but it also does a great job of just laying down the sound of midwest/emo/math music. In the simplest way it helps me get what makes the vibe of the music more.
I like before even watching because I know you put in the effort. Respect man
You are the best human being of this decade.
