    I remember twice I got called out for staying during the credits. The first time was during Mr. Peabody and Sherman, where some guy went to me and told me: "The movie's already over!", and the other time was with Wonder, where a woman trying to get out of the cinema told me and two other girls that where watching the credits: "Are you waiting for a medal?"

    The first thing that came to mind when I saw the video was this bit from the end credits of The Simpsons Movie:
    Bart: Come on, dad, let’s go! I’ve been holding it since they put the dome over the town!
    Homer: You can wait, a lot of people worked really hard on this film, and all they ask is for you to memorize their names!
    But I agree, watching the credits is part of the moviegoing experience.

    I feel like extra content is the ideal way to engage people with the credits. I like to sit til the end of the credits even if the lights are on or the theatre is nearly empty, but there’s no reason not to try and keep it interesting.
    The weird part is that it's hard to feel virtuous because even if I'm paying full attention, there's little chance I'll retain the crazy amount of names on the screen, I almost feel worse that so many names are there and most of them don't mean anything to me.
    But like you said, it's a nice courtesy, the very least anyone can do for the tens or hundreds of hours that all those people put in. Just sitting there and trying to keep up, you become aware of just the loosest idea of how much goes into a movie behind the scenes that you never saw.
    But again, there's so much to take in that at the end of the day, what I like to see and what everyone sticks around for, is to make the credits fun to watch.
    This can mean extra scenes during, after or between the credits, but I'm not just holding out for those. Just make the text and background engaging to look at, give us doodles, animatics or bright colours to make it fun to watch. I feel like usually people's interest begins to fade when the animated text gives way to scrolling credits, so this is where everyone's attention switches off. It's a real balancing act for the team to keep all the different segments of the credits as engaging the movie, and it's nice when they put in the extra mile but very hard to pull off effectively.
    Honestly the thing I enjoy about them that nobody comments on is the music, often a movie will put a ton of their good vocal tracks in the credits and nowhere else. It would be criminal to miss out on a hidden gem, whether or not I’ve already heard it in the film. But even when it’s just instrumentals and scrolling text, I usually try and watch til the very end because I know it’s a respectful thing to do.
    Same goes for videogames and TV, though the latter doesn’t take so much application to do! It might not make any difference, but it’s worth trying to make a habit of anyway. Maybe it’ll catch on and become the norm more often, I dunno.

    One minor issue here, and it could just be in my area (I'd love to hear if it happens elsewhere), but theatres where I live tend to bring up the lights and shut off the projector during the credits. During Avengers (the first one), there was a near riot when they cut off the after-credits scene doing this. So effectively it's sometimes not possible to watch the credits.

    I hadn't thought of the credits in this perspective before. It kinda opened my eyes...though depending on the movie or the time I am watching it or location...usually do if I am watching alone in my room. I may not give every name the same attention but I usually watch the full list of actors, character animators in animated projects, and music credits (scoring and song selection)...I do notice the other roles and such but I just am ignorant as to what some of them are and what they detail like gaffers and such...so I don't usually remember the name.

  • @zakattack8624
    @zakattack8624 5 лет назад

    I'm convinced. I enjoy staying for the credits to read all the foreign names, but yes. I totally agree. Though, I dont really watch films as much.

  • @NotASpyReally
    @NotASpyReally 5 лет назад +2

    I see your point, but. Even if I stay. Even if I read every name and think about all of this while I do... I will not remember the names. I'm not really seeing the people. I'm only just reading their names. And, maybe they are both based on courtesy, but tipping and reading the credits are different things because if you tip, they get more money. If you watch the credits, they won't get anything out of that.
    Also, I never thought about what is shown during/after the credits as a "please read our names". I always thought they did that sometimes just as a sort of epilogue. I like watching the whole credits of a movie because I enjoy the music and I use that time to think about what I just watched. I'm still enjoying the movie while watching the credits. But again, even if I read the names, I won't remember afterwards.
    if I worked in a really good movie, I wouldn't expect the people who watch it to read the credits. I would, however, expect them to be like "Wow, cool!" when I tell them that I took part on it. I don't think the credits are there so that the people who watch the movie can thank the people who did it. I think they are there for legal reasons. That's all.

    • @EyeofSol299
      @EyeofSol299  5 лет назад +1

      It's there for legal reasons, as well as proof of your past work as a crew member, and as a way to credit the people who worked on the movie itself. Crediting them is a akin to "thanking" them. I oppose to the idea that courtesy should only be extended when you know you are being watched. In my eyes, you should do it even if nobody is watching.

    • @monkey-network
      @monkey-network 5 лет назад

      Okay... I have a titch issue with this vid.
      This suggestion to watch the credits just felt like grandstanding for those in the entertainment industry, no so much persuading viewers to consider staying for the credits.
      That's not to say staying for the credits, regardless of extra material, is lame or pathetic, but Imma be the a-hole here to say, regardless of courtesy, I'm not gonna remember or bother remembering everyone that participated in making the movie. The flic itself says enough and unless there's a hidden funny like the coffee deliverer or a worker named Chris P. Bacon, I won't really care. And I mean, it's not that I'll never care, but it isn't like I look at the credits and continuously nod at every name that passes by, proud of every one of them. The product itself speaks for the workers, and the credits are namely for personal favoring. Courtesy would be the fact that I actually paid to see it, thus giving the workers their due. Like this is coming from someone that rarely goes to the theaters because I'm sincerely picky.
      Additionally, I can't help but say that it's the studio's decision to add content over/after the credits. Yeah watchers aren't entitled but then again the studios didn't have to give a shit. I'd say the MCU is bad for doing this, but I can't say there is too much wrong with films having a little extra during credits; after all it's not like the credits scene is considered the highlight in most people sans those rare movies that gave it their all like Into the Spiderverse.
      Like, seeing your name across the hard work is savoring and all, but I'd argue that what you made and the days you've done to make will forever remain in your heart more than the scripted fact that you made it. And shoot, if you were a part of a fiasco/disaster, would you really want to see the credits knowing you gave your time/life to something even you'll find to be utter shit?
      Like I'll say, credits aren't a useless thing. Cuz they're a breather from the quality/wackness that you just witnessed, a time to relax to the music if you truly have nothing else afterwards. And people who are shocked or stunned at those staying for the credits are snobbish, waste of space toads who think time should be for better things when it's really not.
      Yet this video tries to be deep in saying this suggestion to watch the credits should be one of gratuity and respect to the workers while saying you don't *have to* stay, like it's saying "It's ((your)) choice" while constantly nudging you in the ribs. I mean if you wanna stay for the credits, be it to relax a bit before leaving, to see the music list, etc., by all means, but this video sounded less like it's trying to persuade you, more to tell you to feel grateful that these credits exist in the first place. A bit pretentious under the guise of ethical persuasion, all thing considered.

  • @Moony1568

    I think you could’ve saved time by just stating “Watching the credits is a good thing because you’re appreciating and recognizing all the people who worked on the movie . It’s common courtesy and it makes you feel good when you do so. It’s a small thing but it means a lot to those who put their blood, sweat and tears into the movie. Especially the “little guys” like the boom operator, set designers, etc.”
    i always watch the credits because I genuinely appreciate the work that goes into to film making. Plus, it’s a good time to reflect on the film and asses how I thought it was and/or discuss it with a friend.
    I really don’t like the part where you talk about the extra stuff during the credits or end credit scenes. I don’t see those as bribes. I think that’s too negative of a word for what they actually are. They’re extras. Most people-especially in the theaters I go to- leave during the extra stuff. Also they can be really fun like the Pixar animated bloopers that they used to do.
    Honestly, I felt like this video could’ve been more informative if you explained the “smaller” jobs in filmmaking. That’s what made me appreciate the work, learning about those jobs.
    Look: I do understand where you’re getting at but it comes off way too bitter and comparing working on a movie to service jobs don’t really fit. You’re not going to be ostracized in society for not watching the credits like you would be if you didn’t tip your server. Servers need that money to live. Filmmakers are already paid. They don’t rely on people tipping them.
    Idk. That analogy didn’t work for me.

    Jesus loves you. If you repent of your sins and give your life to Him: He will fill you with love, give you happiness in your life, and bless you. The next time that you feel sick or worried or scared, ask Jesus into your heart and your life will get better. Videos will never fill the void inside of you, but Jesus will if you give your life to Him. He will love you, keep you company, and answer your questions. He is real and a lot of the time He will speak to you through your conscience. God is love and everything good comes from Him. Everything good in the world comes from love. Romantic love, familial love, friendship, the love you feel for your hobbies, the love you have for your favorite music, favorite food, favorite movie, etc. All of it comes from God. Without love there is no point to life. It is what we all live for and it is what we were all made for, but the devil tries to ruin everything with fear, stress, worry, etc. Try to get to know God. He is truly worth worshipping.
