  • ‘Black 6′ was just one of the 30,000 Messerschmitt Bf109’s to enter Luftwaffe service. Today it remains the only flying example in the world, and is probably the most authentic restoration of its type. Over 19 years, led by Russ Snadden, a volunteer team brought this rare aircraft back to flight. This film explores and records the painstaking stages of their task, revealing the aircrafts history through WWII archive, set against a background of secret pilot training in gliders and civil aircraft.
    Produced in association with the Imperial War Museum, this documentary series highlights the history and developments of two great WWII fighters, the Messerschmitt Bf109 and the Sea Hurricane. We meet the pilots who flew them and the restoration teams who bought them back to flight. The series includes rare WWII archive footage, air to air sequences and interviews with pilots, historians and conservationists.

    A little bit strange after watching this for just under a hour and becoming engrossed in the entire substance of the story to learn that the aircraft was damaged to the point of being grounded. It actually caused me to feel a sadness for an inanimate object and the men that basically dedicated a large portion of their lives to bringing it back to being airworthy. I am not capable of doing mechanical or physical things like I used to, but if I had the resources I would definitely donate a considerable amount to projects like this that keep history alive.

    • @MeAbroad2004

      It was likely going to be grounded anyway - insurance premiums were a reason (a reason - maybe not the only reason). Small compensation but on the final flight it had a replacement prop - so despite the prang - the original prop was not damaged.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 2 года назад +2

      @@andypandywalters "Black 6" was never going to fly indefinitely. The original plan was to fly for a season or two and retire her permanently. If I understand correctly, the unfortunately incident was on the retirement flight ironically. Today there is a Bf-109E that is airworthy in the UK and a G or F that is in restoration. And I think another Emil that is still in restoration is owned by a UK collector.

    It may be an old video, but the dedication of the men who returned this thoroughbred to the air deserves recognition.
    It's sad that the aircraft was later damaged beyond affordable repair, but the 109 was always regarded as a difficult aircraft for anyone not well trained in flying it. The undercarriage was narrow and landing was risky for rookies or in less than ideal conditions.

    Black 6 has been on static display since an idiot crashed it in 1997.
    Long story short, the pilot was unaware of the characteristics of the engine cooling system - during a display at Duxford he was informed by the tower that he was 'trailing vapour'.
    This was normal if the coolant was hot but the pilot panicked and came down like a meteor to land - anyone watching knew he was too fast and steep and it flipped on its back.
    It was later found that he had the cowl flaps closed!
    Of course, being of high rank in the RAF, he was exonerated of blame and Black 6 was deemed too expensive to repair.
    She was housed at Hendon Museum near London until the collection was *split up recently and now resides in Cosford, which is in the middle of nowhere in comparison.
    *Amazingly, Hendons superb collection was split up to make way for 'corporate hospitality' space.

    I took photos of the FW 190 dangling from the ceiling when I visited the IWM in 2007! That's where I also found a Tiger (Panzer VI) with the hole in the rear - and a Rheinmetall 20mm MK20 twin AA gun with German badges and tags! This weapon was used by the Bundeswehr until the mid - 90s, when the Aerodrome Support Units (Luftwaffen - Sicherungsstaffeln) where disbanded.

      @@tripwire3992 As I recall, it landed long, hit a ditch, and flipped on its back in the late '90s. It was indeed a big deal during its restoration as it was indeed a first at the time.
