OLDEST STORES in OAHU! || Iconic Chicken, Grandma Maki & More at General Stores in Hawaii!
• OLDEST STORES in OAHU!...
Thank god you showed Waikane Store and showed the chicken. I was visiting a couple years back and a local told me to get the chicken there so I did and saw Nirvana. I constantly tell people about this place and how good the chicken is so they can try it too. I had no words to explain how it tasted except for "It's like she took all the goodness in the world, smothered it in MSG, then sprinkled crack on it cuz I am addicted for sure." That Auntie was so nice too she gave us a free sushi cuz we had just renewed our vows that day. Such Aloha in that store.
The epitome of Aloha there! Fried chicken like no where else! We are, must visit store on the island! 🤙
Oh my! Thank you for loving our store!!!
If any episode was too short it was this one. This is right up my alley. I’m old now, but even when I was young people would tell me I’m an old soul. I like new stuff, however the old style stuff really touches my soul. The extra outtakes today too. 😂
Can't beat nostalgia!
This episode was very nostalgic for me because the grandma maki was like my mom used to make 60 years ago.
How nostalgic! 🤙
These are the kinds of businesses/stores we need to keep open at all cost. Live local buy local and support local!
🙌 Mahalo!
The bloopers at the end is the best! lol
😂😂😂
This is my kine grinds! When I was a kid, our general store had so ono manapua, pork hash, all kind seed and, of course, Icee. I was feeling the memories and then saw the bloopers... I buss out laughing so hard! best ones yet!🤣🤣🤣
We're happy you enjoyed this one! Mahalo Barbara! 🤙
Thanks guys for another nice video! The chili and rice for $3.99 caught my eye. Nice price and the food looks tasty The poke bowl with lenchon, another excellent choice.

My favorite Waikane Store! I did not 13:44 know it started in 1898. Thank you for these nostalgic places. I just love their chicken and maki sushi. Just like my Bachan 4:33 used to make.Amanda and Felix you guys are the best. 💖 Thank you for sharing. Drive carefully.
Blessings💖🙏🌺💖
That fried chicken was so good! Nothing like it anywhere else! Mahalo Patricia! 🤙
Thank you guys, I found you through your collab with Sean and his wife and really enjoy your videos.
Mahalo for joining our Foodie ohana! 🤙
General mom n pop stores are the best💯🤙😎 Chings is the spot after a tako dive across the street 👌
All kind grinds after! Mahalo! 🤙
Man, so many memories brought up with this video. Used to always hit up the first three spots. Used to get maki sushi from Waikane store when we would go to Kaneohe. I grew up in Hauula so would go to Sam's for musubi and pake cake. In fact, I still go grab some whenever I go back. Live mainland now. Used to go Ching's a lot too. Kahuku superette was another good one for poke and rice. I need to plan a trip back soon! haha. Thanks guys!
Such nostalgia! 🤙
Stopped at Ching's back in 2017 during trip to Oahu. Great shrimp truck parks there too.
Yes!
This episode made me cry! Brought me back to the hanabada days!!!
He’s eating chicken in front of the chickens 😂😮🐓
😭😅
Guys my childhood was in the 80's. Flavors I miss that were never replicated anywhere else was the futomaki with the pink shrimp flakes from China town, Korean BBQ chicken from Pearl city, Navy's sweet and spicy BBQ chicken, Uncle Tom's manapua truck $0.50 fried chicken from Makalapa.
Those were the days!
Amanda the food looks delectable!!! And you do a fantastic job of convincing your viewers""""" IM one of them. Shalom.
Mahalo! 🤙
It’s Monday Foodie Ohana! General stores, tienditas, bodegas…no matter what you call them, they are the go to places to get OG treats. Thank you for sharing your Hawaiian roots with us. I love the special eats and goodies you can only find in places like that. The chicken and homemade cookies looked legit! SPAM and cheese roll is a real deal breakfast item; carbs and protein to get the day started right. Love you guys and look forward to more banger episodes! 🤙🏽❤️🏚️🏪🌴
We hope you liked this one! Mahalo Armando! 🤙
@@AmandaFelixEats loved it guys! The outtakes were classic. It seemed like the wind had you guys all off the tracks. 😄
TEA COOKIE AMANDA.
Sam Store is known for the Pake cake which is good to eat with water, tea. And from what I was told by my dad, Sam Choy’s dad owned that store back in the day. Many things they sell there now is added additions. Good ones 😊
Oh my goodness! You guys are so funny!!! 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
When I worked the Windward beat, Waikane Store was a must go to stop, their Mochico Fried Chicken is my favorite, and the fresh hand rolled Maki Sushi is my go to meal especially when your in a pinch...Mahalo's you guyz!
Another amazing video!! ❤❤
Mahalo! 🤙
Love that you guys went to all theses General Stores! Ft Ruger Is my favorite growing up in town!

Great video LAIE boy forever. Sam store was the number one place to be knew their family.
As kids, we used to walk from 8th Ave to Ft. Ruger Mkt to buy penny candies.
Thank you for this video! Brings back so many memories from my childhood. The boiled peanuts are the BEST!! And the Grandma Maki roll, too!! Thank you, again🤙🏻👍🏻👋🏻 ❤
Mahalo for watching! 🤙
Great theme for this episosde - general stores !
@2:19 Felix - the OG fried chicken from the Waikane Store looked ono-licious !
@8:42 Amanda's reaction to the 'cake cookie' was priceless (lol)
Mahalo! 🤙
Hi to the cutest couple on RUclips+1(that's davon) lol Love the trip through time... general stores are the greatest! The outtakes had me in stitches.. thanks for the laughs 😂👍
Mahalo always Diana! Have a great week! 🤙
OK seriously gonna have to try that Waikane chicken! I'll have to compare it to my mom's mochiko chicken (hands down best I ever had, but she doesn't make it much any more). Thanks for shedding light on places like this, always nice to swing by and pick up food, spam musubi to snack on, etc.
Great episode, really enjoyed watching.
Mahalo! 🤙
Amazing video! I love stopping by Fort Ruger for that very same poke bowl every time I come visit. Aloha from SF!
Mahalo! 🤙
Lol Felix is eating chicken while a chicken is walking around behind him 😂
😅
Thumbs up on this video! Thanks.
Mahalo for watching! 🤙
Like our Bodegas back in NYC..another good episode
Mahalo! 🤙

I love a historical foodie lesson.
Us too!
Love these OG General Store local kine grindz! We often used to stop at the Waikane Store when we drove around the island, but the most nostalgic store for me was Ft. Ruger Market. I often stopped by there with friends in high school and college, and because I worked at nearby KCC, I also picked up Hawaiian food occasionally, though the poke was too expensive to bring to potlucks at school, and there were so many good places to eat at KCC and in the area. Kaimuki-Kapahulu is really a local food paradise at affordable prices! Mahalo for sharing some different kind of places this time.
Mahalo Jody! 🤙
Awesome video! Brings back memories for growing up in Ewa. There was one for the Ewa sugar plantation workers and was local one located in Honouliuli.
Mahalo! 🤙
Thank you Amanda and Felix for sharing this amazing episode. I really enjoyed watching this, it brings me back good memories when I was growing up eating at all theses mom and pop general stores. The ono grindz. SUPPORT LOCAL. God bless you both, hope you have a amazing and terrific Aloha Monday
Mahalo Todd! 🤙
More general store please!
👍
We used to say you Pake' which mean't cheap.
I still make hot dog with chili and rice, sometimes with spaghetti. My kids grewup with me makling it.
That icee needs ice cream in it.
Definitely missing the ice cream! Mahalo! 🤙
in AZ i have a hard time finding redondo's hot dog which is the only one to make with chili and rice
Love seeing these OG General Stores😊👍🏻
Our favorites! 🤙
😎🤙🏻
My highschool lunch always was at the Rainbow Dr in. Chili rice plate was a dollar. So good
Miss those prices!

Aloha Foodie Ohana ! I Loved the vlog ! It brought back ... back in the day memories ! Mahalo for sharing ! Da Von so nice to see ya ! Take Care !
Mahalo Gail! 🤙
Nice chicken looks good. Like the life chickens in the background.
I was in Oahu two weeks ago and before going I did extensive research on where to go and where to eat and I totally didn’t know about places like these. Maybe next time, thanks for the vid!!
Mahalo! 🤙
Thanks!
Mahalo nui for the continued support! 🙏🤙
That was fun... and ONO! Mahalo!
Mahalo! 🤙
Love this channel.😊
Mahalo! 🤙
Oh my. A great episode. That Pake Cake at Sam's reminded me of Stone Cookies that we used to get from the Big Island. All the places certainly need to be cherished so they remain in operation.
We hope to revive and keep these places running! They are local icons for sure! Mahalo Carol! Have a great week! 🤙
Yvonne get well soon ! Love you girl !
🤙
All the food looks so good 😊
🤤🤤
Favorite school lunches. Shepard's Pie, Hamburger Stew and Hamburger patty and rice. Mrs Tanji the cafeteria manager for Wilcox School posted the entire menu on a blackboard on Monday so you could bring brown bag if you saw something you didn't like. Few did because the parents always sided with Mrs. Tanji. She changed the entire eating habits on Kauai as diners began to serve her food.
Interesting story! We need to visit kauai soon!
It's too funny watching you eat chicken while one is walking around behind you
Yes, the Parker cake is the wedding cake. Great with a glass of milk.
We know the pake cake as tea cake, it looks like that one needed more flavor kinda pale.
2:35 - the old-fashioned (Mom and Pops) General Stores are the best. I saw a chicken in the background, as Felix eats a fried chicken sandwich. (I once gave a Chicken a chicken mcnugget (from McDonald's). It ate the chicken mcnugget ! they may look cute but, they are scary cannibals !)
They're called General Stores on the mainland too, especially in small towns.
8:36 good with Kona coffee
9:22 very mild, not too sugary
The breezy trade winds everywhere make me homesick
Photolukehawaii brought me here.
Everything you ate I miss the boiled peanuts the most!
Those are iconic! Mahalo! 🤙
I stayed with my Obachan EVERY summer beginning in 1946..her address was 3445 Edma St. We walked to Ruger Market for 50/50 ice cream bars (If I was good).....I've visited this store recently and have to admit that it still looks/smells the same as my memories...
How nostalgic! That's good to know! 🤙
Is that a manapua truck tea cookie? Loooove ❤
Wow, such a blast from the past! I used to spend my allowance on my weekly coke-strawberry ICEEs, and would also collect the diamonds on the cups for free ICEEs.
Forgot about those! How nostalgic! Mahalo! 🤙
Aloha, Amanda & Felix & Da Vonz...This was an awesome episode. It has been so long since I visited the Waikane Store. The chicken and the maki sushi are epic! Thanks for the revisit & reminder when out that way...I am always looking for a great Pork Hash, Ching Store is now on my list to try that. Have not had that one. Another general store that I have not been to in years, LOL! Ft Ruger Market was one of my favorite places to eat at after the beach, while growing up (along with Rainbow Drive in). Ruger Market also use to have a lot of different fish jerky that was super ono. I'm sure they still do. Great Hawaiian Food too. Hits the spot. Mahalo for taking us back in time to the local General Stores. Only in Hawaii and the yes, the Icee is awesome on a hot day.
Mahalo!
We hope this video brought back plenty of nostalgia! Mahalo Rick! 🤙
OG general stores, what a great idea for a vid in this series! Loved all the old-timey food, gave me the feels for sure. And Ruger Market was in my old neighborhood too (my parents still live in Kaimuki), so was happy to see them featured. The boiled peanuts and their lechon are the best! But dang, I gotta find some way to get that mochiko chicken! 🤯 Thanks for all the good memories, and especially those laughs....too funny! 🤣
Mahalo! 🤙😂
I lived by Waikani and went Fort Ruger on our way to Aunties house all the time. So we went there really miss them I got to visit soon Yummiest 🥰🌹🌹🌹
Love both places! 🤤
The pake cake looks a lot like a Chinese tea cookie
Very similar!
Wea the round nori rice ball with the ume inside guys thanks for sharing
Mahalo! 🤙
So nostalgic! Boiled peanuts! So ono! Love Da Von laughing in the background. ; )
Mahalo Cheryl! 🤙
Next stop is the Micronesian Marts. Personally, have never been .... thinking like turkey tails and the like.
MAN, I really miss those boiled peanuts!! Brings back good memories! Use to love eating those at the Friday night Football Games!! NHS c/o '74. 😋😋😋🥜
Those are legendary! 🤙
Pale cake is a Chinese tea cookie
Waikane and Ching are up high on my list! The food is ono'licious! Thanks for making me hungry!😂
🍍😎🤙🌴🥥🌺🌈
Mahalo for watching! 🤙
You guys are adorable
Mahalo! 🤙
We have general stores here in Australia also, it definitely has everything here as well, they are so handy. That fried chicken in that store looked so good I love old school nostalgic stores that sell iconic eats. Aloha guys, have a great rest of the week.
Mahalo Angie! Have a great week! 🤙
Wowza. As cheap as the 7-11 but better home made little eats for snacks or meals of smaller bites. This is real local flavor and would make a great foodies tour. Bet folks would happily pay $100 for three historical General Store stops. Just my old school travel agent mind. The Von could easily do this with just three or four Authentic Foodie's O'ahu General Store Personal Tours. The first time I saw you two was at a back road drive inn stop, another series theme. Start at the Rainbow. "EXPLORE YOUR INNER FOODIE!" is a perfect byline for your branding. I really appreciate you all.
Wow I haven’t heard anyone else call it PAKE CAKE for a long time.
Old school!
Pake Cake🔥🔥 I thought these were well known but I'm surprised not everyone knows. My family always brings them when they come main land.
Hey Cus !!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍👍💕💕💕💕
👋🤙
Not eating fried chicken with a bunch of chickens running around behind you 😂😂
Diamond head strawberry goes with the pake cake. Get the roti next time. Sam's store was Sam Choi's dad's store🤟
Hopefully they have in stock next time 🙏
Just got back from FORT RUGER FOOD MARKET… we got the Lechoń and poke bowl with lomi salmon… super ono grindz! Massive thanks for the recommendation 🤙🏼🌈🤗🤩
Mahalo! 🤙
Sam store is my favorite. every time I'm there gotta get the Roti and curry, musubi, and and pake cake. Gotta wash down the pake cake with chocolate milk or strawberry soda😂. Weird mix, but trust me she go lol😂
Maybe the chocolate milk! 👍
Oh what a fun and nostalgic video! Always love going to the general stores. Truly enjoy your folks' content. Next one... try going to places where beach goers or surfers go before or after a beach session. Suggestion: Silva's Grocery and Liquor Store in Ewa Beach. One stop place for plate lunch and awesome desserts. Oh Amanda! According to their IG, they sometimes there's Russian Tea Cookies.
Sounds like a fun video idea! Mahalo! 🤙
A general store was a plantation store.
Your one and only store you could shop if you worked on a plantation.
Post Office, Bank included.
🙌👌
Love watching your videos and I notice you cut your hair…Love it…❤️❤️❤️
Mahalo! 🤙
Loved your vid. I've been to Hawaii one time. Don't know if I'll ever be back. Would have liked to try some of these local places.
Maybe one day 🤙
Pakey cake are the Tea Cookies you can get down Chinatown.
Yay Arigato 🎉
Mahalo! 🤙
Pake cake...chinese tea cookie. 😁 We always get that when we visit because my kids love it. Although i learned how to make it myself since we don't live there anymore. It's made with the chinese sugar so it has a different flavor. It's not my cup of tea but it's meant to eat with tea since it is a chinese "tea" cookie..😁
one of the sad things that happened in the 90's or late 80's was that the family that ran ruger mkt moved to Vegas, I think, so the poke was never the same. I drove from Kalihi for it! A kid my dtr dated used to work there and told me the secret of their poke: msg. When a friend married one of the girls, he became one of the family. I always envied him. They used to make their poke right in front of you. Haw!
so delicious
🤤
My uncle and I built our home behind the art store.Just down the street from this general store. We would buy our beers there.
How nostalgic!
Aloha Foodie Ohana 😋
What's good Walt! 🤙
@@AmandaFelixEats I'm at a cafe that is crazy.
Local places !
Gotta love them!
The roti at Sam’s store is killahs! Hope you’re able to get some one day.
We've been dying to try those! 😭
