Watching your channel is bad for my bank account! I got mine (Nikon version in mint condition) a couple of days ago after watching your video. I have to say: I love the 28-70mm. Great complement for my 11-16mm. Thank you!
I've just been told from a reputable source that it was in fact Angenieux that bought the design from Tokina. Interesting! Either way, this lens is awesome! And my new go-to zoom for my narrative shoots!
The older ones are def the Angenieux design especially with the f2.6 instead of f2.8. Hey question, I know you don’t like variable ND but with the simmod one did it have IRcut in there or did IR pollution still happen??
According to an internet resource(cameragx.com/2018/04/11/the-truth-about-the-angenieux-28-70-af-zoom/amp/) only the 28-70 f2.6-2.8 has connection with Angenieux, is it true?
My favourite creative lens. The way it renders creamy skin tones and blooms highlights with no filter! The bokeh is velvety. The colours so rich. I use it on the EOS R when I’m bored of the modern/clinical/autofocus thing and just wanna have fun ;) I also recommend the Super Takumar 135mm f2.5 for mojo - even Kubrick used a modded version of it...

I guess I got unlucky because it was really really soft at 2.8 and the next stops. It was really unusable at those stops, and I wasn't pixel peeping it gave the image a straight up haze. And honestly I ended up selling it... Might buy it again someday
Interesting to see you've upgraded to Firecrest ND+IR filters. I was just watching your filter videos and researching what other options were out there. Kind of settled on Pancro and Firecrest being the best, but wasn't sure. Also learned that Panavision has a battery driven variable LCD ND (rental only). Now I need to understand why there are 3 sizes of glass and which matte box is best for my use cases. All boxes don't seem to support stacking filters.
Still like/recommend this lens? I picked up cine modded trip from Ironglass (37,58,85) when I shoot broll for my doc/narrative work, I use the sigma 24-70. Would this tokina lens still be good to pickup?
i haved use this zoom ( version II) for two months, in 2008, very tasty manual focusing, but absolutely too low resolution from 50 to 70mm. this optics was quite hype, more than today. Maybe it was a bad sample for me.
Oh great one? What cameras are you using this one Canon, BMPCC 4k, 6K, just wondering. I have a version of this I am using and it's just a workhorse. Yes! it has its limitations. But the look and the fact that I can pull focus with no breathing on a run and gun HH set up is crazy + that vintage look.
I owned this lens a few years ago for Nikon and have missed it so much. I also found that great review on Vimeo by R73. I found a mint copy for Canon EF on ebay for $150 and hope I can get it to work on my Canon R5! I'll post my findings on my channel. Great content btw!
Internal zoom would make this lens quite useful for me. Previous Tokina lenses I've had in the past have had a bit of bloom in the highlights specifically in the blues if I remember correctly. I don't remember them being parfocal though. That's useful
The lens definitely looks like a good one - I've had my eyes on it for years, but unless I can get price AND condition to both be good, which doesn't normally happen at the same time, I'll keep looking. So far I've gotten a Tokina 50-135/2.8, a Sigma 17-50/2.8, and a Tamron 28-75/2.8 ranging from a start of $186 in like new condition down to about $80 where other than a scratch requiring a 1.1-1.2x crop, minimum, it's in great condition acting as a 35-96/1.8(roughly). Out of those the Tokina is my FAVORITE and based on some of the qualities you mentioned being seen in some of their other pro lenses(like the one I have) I wouldn't be surprised if Tokina's involvement/co-operation ran deep. I'm glad to see high praise for the company - they engineered some beautiful kit and its sad to see them doing so poorly now.
Has anyone noticed that when on the BMPCC4K and a metabones the lens set to 28mm and put to even f4 when you zoom in the f-stop changes? Shouldn’t it stay at f4 all the way through the zoom range? Is there a fix for this or do I have the settings wrong?
