  • This weekend was the annual Cincinnati Kayak Fishing charity tournament, and once again this year we chose the local Southwest Ohio chapter of Heroes On The Water, an amazing group that takes veterans and first responders and their families fishing to help them heal. We all know how much being out there fishing helps us mentally and physically, so it was really awesome to get to help give that to someone else.
I probably picked the wrong lake to fish for this tournament since you are supposed to catch dozens of bass, but I don't know of a "numbers" lake, I usually never catch that many bass no matter where I go! So I picked somewhere I am comfortable and got down to work. My day didn't go quite as I had hoped and I made some stupid mistakes, but I am really happy with it overall...I stayed focused, fished smart, made appropriate adjustments, and kept grinding and never gave up. I ended up 12th out of 46 anglers.
Find your local chapter of Heroes on the Water and find out how you can help!

@@GirlGoneFishing Because fishing and bass are dynamic, there is always going to be that "two steps forward, one step back" (or vice versa) experience. Which is what makes the sport both thrilling and, sometimes, aggravating. I know few fishermen who don't at least sometimes ask themselves what in the heck they are doing out there. Yesterday, for instance, in 4 hours of fishing, I caught 1 bass. Fortunately, I caught 7 crappie. I take my victories where I can find them.
Bet that rain at the end of the day was refreshing!

That's awesome, I just recently had a Bass get stuck under a tree. Took me 10 minutes to get him out. He was a good size. Enjoy your enthusiasm for fishing!

Congrats on a good day. When jig fishing or what ever, get yourself some 1 oz or bigger sinkers. Put a clip on them and if you get hung up keep the line tight clip the weight on and let it slide down the line and most times it will knock the lure free. If it doesn’t just bounce the weight up and down and sometimes it will still free the lure. If it doesn’t work the sinkers are cheap and you’re really not out anything. Keep fishing you videos are cool to watch.

Nice job, Melissa! Almost in the top 25% of anglers. I noticed you weren't using your net when bringing in your fish - has that been easier for you, or are you just trying out the technique for awhile?

Thanks! So for the last 2 years I have been trying to have a very disciplined routine when I hook a tournament fish using the net, but recently I have decided there are times that I have a better chance of getting the fish in the boat if I just boat flip it. No matter how hard I try to prevent it, I believe I am letting up on the pressure on the fish just a little when I lean to grab and deploy my net, and I have lost more fish at that precise moment than any other (especially on a chatterbait for some reason). So if I am able to keep constant pressure on the fish and just boat flip it I am going to allow myself to do that. I think it is time I start trusting these last few years of intense practice and go with my developing instincts when they tell me something.
