- How to Make Sour Dough Starter Day 1 From Scratch
Make sure, for fun, you give your sourdough starter a name! It is a living thing, after all! haha
This is the first of nine videos, creating sourdough starter from scratch! Each day we will come back, together, and feed it and grow it. After 9 days, we should have a beautiful starter that we can use to make bread! Fingers crossed! haha

Starter - Day 1
50 grams of flour (rye or whole wheat are best but all purpose and bread flour can work too)
50 grams of non-chlorinated water
Mix together in a large glass jar and then put it in a dark warm place.

Dear Heather. I came across your channel a short time ago when your story of the terrible tragedy popped up on my video list. I am so sorry that I found you this way but I am grateful I did find you. I have been binge watching your videos and loving them. You have such a beautiful onscreen presence and I love how real your videos are i.e. kids chattering in the background or your husband asking if there is something he can taste lol. I am so sorry for the loss you are all going through. What I really want to tell you though is that you are amazing. You are so strong and I can see your faith in your words and the way you can still smile. You have experienced something so awful yet you are still able to be an inspiration to all. God bless you and your precious babies. In the midst of all of this you still have so much to smile about. God is good. 🙏

I know you made this series of videos two years ago, but I just found them and beginning my Starter today, 1-15-22. Using wheat flour and hoping it works for me. Years ago I was given a Starter and directions for feeding it. The woman who gave it to me called it Friendship Starter since you were instructed to share the starter. It also came with instructions for making a fruit bread. If only I’d known then what a treasure it was. Sure wish I still had it today. The woman who gifted me didn’t realize exactly what she had either.
I’m a late comer but I am starting my sourdough starter today. I have kept up with your terrible accident and lose. I started to watch your utube channel right before your accident. I have learned so much from your different utube teachings. You are such a special person and I hope you will feel up to starting up again soon. You are an excellent teacher and I thank you for sharing what you have learned with all of us. May God continue to bless you and your family. You are truly an inspiration to me. Just a tip: if you have a seed starter mat, put it in the dehydrator standing up and leave it on. I do this with my Kombucha and it works great!

I have watched several homestead families, and you are the only one who showed how to weigh the flour on a scale. I have a Weight Watchers scale and now know how to use it better. Thank you for showing how to use the scale and weigh. I don't know why I couldn't figure it out myself. lol

Hey Heather, I was just thinking about this community sourdough effort and had an idea. See whatcha think. Every area of the country has their own unique airborne yeast, all tasting differently. (At least that's what I've heard.) It would be so cool to have folks exchange some of their Sourdough Starters with each other, baking some bread, and comparing the differences, if any! Love ya....

Oh my gosh, I can't wait to see how this goes! I've never tried to make sourdough starter but I'd love to try it out. I only have AP flour but it's worth a shot. I'd love to try my hand at fresh sourdough bread!
heck yeah! my girlfriend made beautiful sourdough using AP flour! the worst that can happen is you try again if it doesnt work. 👍🏻👏🏻
@@TheKneadyHomesteader Well even if she starts it with AP, when she feeds it and starts using the rye flour it should be fine.
LaKore ... I have ONLY ever used AP flour for my starters, the one I have currently is just a little over 3 years old and going fine ! : )
All I have ever used is AP flour, lol. Works just fine!

My Dad was a Baker and made the BEST Sourdough Bread! He had his 'secret' recipe for his Starter, and didn't share it with anyone, except 1 Female Cousin. After YEARS of bugging her, she finally relented and told me his 'secret' ingredient.... Pineapple Juice instead of Distilled or Filtered water for the 1st day ONLY. After the first day, it was flour and Distilled or Filtered water. Now, with the self-quarantined going on, this is as good a time as any to see if I can find the ingredients and see about starting my own Starter! I will follow you as you go through your process! THANK YOU!! =)

I saved this/these video months ago. I'm so excited to say I started mine today, 12/31/21, with Bob's Red Mill Whole Wheat flour. I second guess myself all the time so I remeasured my jar and then my jar with flour, in grams, added my water and walla! I felt like you and I were cooking together. EXCITED!!

Hi, I'm a retired baker. Weighing your ingredients is so important. It's how bakeries and commercial companies do their recipes. This is how we learn at school. We weigh everything. I recently started a sourdough starter and I have tried twice to use it and failed... I was going by two other RUclipsrs... And then all of a sudden it hit me, I need to see what the kneady homesteader has on sourdough... I could not be more excited to see this series of videos! i switched over to whole wheat because folks could get that more easily. so rye or whole wheat, either will be great!
I found rye on Amazon through Whole Foods and they deliver in 2 hours.

I am going to try this, but I don't have any warm areas in my house, so I think I will wait til the spring to try it. I think weighing is the right way to cook, yes we can cook/bake with just measuring the regular way, but if you want perfection, then weighing is the way to go. Thanks for all you do Heather!
