Vandoren, 5RV Lyre 13, first minutes with a new mouthpiece :)

- I just bought a new mouthpiece-5RV Lyre 13.
It was a spontaneous purchase. There were pros and cons.
Pros are it seems to me that this mouthpiece was quite popular in 50th and 60th and I sort of like the vibrant sound of old French clarinetists and this mouthpiece has an old design.
Also, I heard it was recommended to students by David Weber and Harold Wright. Both are kind of idols for many clarinetists.
The cons are it seems nowadays no one professional clarinetist plays this mouthpiece, except maybe Paul Meyer.
So this is just a very brief test and the very first experience with this mouthpiece. Later I am going to compare it to Reserve Evolution and BD5, but it already seems to me that this mouthpiece is going to be my favorite after I am used to it 🤔
PS. Strange noise in the background is my cats playing or fighting lol
I like the 5RV Lyre in a lot of ways. I personally use V12 reeds, 4.5 strength, when I play it, as with most Vandoren Mouthpieces. However, with a leather ligature, I'd probably go down to 4 or a light 4.5 You sound really great with it!
Thank you! For me 4 is too strong. Some time ago I decided I needed to learn how to play softer reeds and now can't play strong reeds 😆
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Haha that's perfectly fine! I think reed strength is mostly for comfort, not so much for sound. And you sound amazing, keep doing what you're doing, my friend!
5RVL with V12 is my exact setup! Sometimes I switch to BD5 because sometimes I feel that I can't push the 5RV without it breaking, but maybe that's just an adjustment I have to make. Every mouthpiece is different :)
I don't think it sounds 'bright' in a bad way at all. It sounds rather fluid, focused and deep. I think if you were playing this in a large ensemble, it would blend and project well. It sounds like you're not quite used to the altissimo and response, but the BD5 and Reserve Evolution are radically different mouthpieces. Would a V12 3.5+ stabilize things a bit more for you? Sounds great! 👍🏻
Thank you! Yeah, I think a bit stronger reed will work for me better. Also, maybe I need to take in a bit less of the mouthpiece. And definitely, I need more than a few minutes to get used to the mouthpiece lol
I kinda changed my mind. V12 3.5 is enough for 5RV lyre(at least for mine). 3.5+ needs too much effort playing It while on M30, 3.5+ feels totally right, despite being more open. I guess It's like this because M30 has thicker rails and longer facing? Maybe..
It's always tricky to guess what reed strength is ok for a particular mouthpiece. I think it depends on the mouthpiece interior and embouchure/playing style as well.
I'm very glad you like 5rv lyre, I really like your tone playing It. Though I find mine playing better with V12 3.5+ and soon will try also number 4. Another ones you should try are M30, M30 lyre and BD4, I recommend them with 3.5+ V12. Lately I tend to play V12 3.5+ minimum, I find 3.5 light for me and not getting the stability I like, even If mouthpiece is designed to play maximum V12 3.5, like a B40.
There are definitely a lot of mouthpieces I should try and I hope will eventually try. I just wonder why 5rv is not popular, as it seems it's a wonderful model 🤔
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Yes, Indeed. It's very good underrated mouthpiece. It has a nice center and core and can play higher strength reeds with not much effort. Mine is an older engraved one traditional beak, which generally in engraved Vandorens material is better quality than the newer yellow logo ones, but I think I would prefer profile 88, though I didn't find profile 88 in engraved version unfortunately.

What's the reason you play 13 series mouthpieces? You want to be using shorter barrel? I see in my tuner you play at 442hz.
I tend to play too sharp (bad embouchure?).Even with a 66mm barrel. So 13 series is a remedy for me. Besides that I prefer tonal characteristics of the 13 series. They play a bit deeper and rounder. Maybe it's not that good for my BD5 but definitely it's good for 5rv lyre. It helps a bit with its tendency to be too bright and straight.
@@alexeysclarinet9109 That's really useful to know, also I assume you can use a shorter barrel which is better(less resistance).
Hi! I think you are overblowing the mouthpiece. This king of pieces and more close facing are more intended to play with a different aproach. Like the old way of playing, searching the resonance inaide of your mouth. Other thing to put in work on a new motuthpiece is playing more pianissimo. What's the point in playing fortissimo all the time? Any mouthpiece can play loud 👀 did you saw the video where Donald Montanaro tries ligatures? Go ans check!

I don't think I overblow it. Also, I am not sure if I understand the idea of "search for resonance inside the mouth". One more thing I'd like to highlight is that I played it for the first time and tried to understand dynamic capabilities and tried to get as much reed vibration (and therefore overtone s) from the reed. And last, but not least I learned from experience and my teacher - we need to push, and even if it sounds too edgy at close distance it sounds well in long distance. Piece! :)
