Francis Poulenc, Clarinet Sonata, part 2
Needed to take an extremely soft reed to play with clear sound on p or pp. It's an interesting experience. I started considering playing softer reeds than I used to use ( and I don't play hard reed at all, they are already on the soft side) 🤔

I had a vacation and have not played clarinet for almost a month. Moreover, I left all my playing reeds in my country house. I only found a couple of old discarded reeds in my apartment. I tried to balance them and...I was quite surprised. They became decent reeds. I am starting to believe in the phrase "the trick is reed balancing".

Would you say the B40D is resistant enough so someone could play lighter reeds like V12 #3? Or B40 Lyre would do better with lighter reeds? (As chart mention)
@@jimis3167 D40D is resistant mouthpiece. I play V12 3.5 on most of my mouthpieces but I use 3 or 3+ with B40D. Also based on charts B40 Lyre has more closed and longer facing meaning for me that optimal reed strength for me will be smth between 3+ and 3.5
@@alexeysclarinet9109 So, as I understand B40D probably is more resistant than B40 Lyre?
@@jimis3167 based on spec's, yes, I do believe that B40D should be slightly more resistant. But it is always better to try and compare in reality:)

@@jimis3167 unfortunately I don't have regular B40 :( Based on what I read the B40D has a bit different design. Also, based on what I heard it feels to me that the B40 Lyre 13 Series sounds similar to the B40D. But all these are my speculations.

Just informatively, do you still play B40D with V12 3.5?
B40D - yes, reeds are from 3 to 3+ of different brands. This particular is of "SPB Reeds" brand ( Russian)
@@alexeysclarinet9109 My preferred reeds would be V12 3+ but don't exist. This time I try again the Vandoren traditional 3 which I was playing in my early years. I try them on the Evolution marble mouthpiece. They play quite well. Since there isn't 3+, those are as close to that as I can get. V12 3+ would be better for sure, V12s are nicer quality.
@@jimis3167 if you really like V12 I would suggest taking 3.5 and sanding tiny bit of flat part of reed on sand paper
@@alexeysclarinet9109I have a Vandoren glass reed resurfacer, though It takes off the reed too much, even with little rubbing. Fine grit sandpaper is better I think. Do you use 600 or 1000 grit on reeds?
@@jimis3167 usually I use 600. I put a reed on a sandpaper so the reed tip is not touching sandpaper and then I do just several circular motions with almost no pressure and then test reed.

Does the B40D German mouthpiece fit the Böhm system clarinet properly?
@@svantepersson9735 it sticks out a bit because tenon a bit longer ( so pitch a bit lower ) , but besides this it fits and works well.
Nicely performed! Thank you! I think the BD5 has a small edge over the Selmer. Both have a very centered tone, but the BD5 spoke nicely in the Mozart. I will say that the BD5 is very unforgiving if your embouchure gets tired. It didn't work with a Legere reed. I am playing a Dassios L and it works perfectly with a Legere Euro reed, 3.25. The tone is very warm and pleasing for a non-professional on my 1966 Buffet R13. They made very good clarinets in the 1960s!
@@philpasteris8973 thank you for your input!
I currently try the Echo mouthpiece. Although It seems very good in tuning notes(voicing notes), I don't quite like the lacking response It has. Should I give a try to a second one or just return it? In my experience, each mouthpiece differs even If made by CNC machine.

I really like your sound, after watching a couple of your mouthpiece comparison videos i think i might want to try an m15or m30! :) just wondering, what is your musical background? are you an orchestral musician or just hobbyist?
Thank you! I have bachelor's degree. Used to be a clarinet teacher but about last 10 years I am just hobbyist 😊
I saw the thread on clarinet bboard about B40D doesn't fit all the way. Did you trim it so It fits?
I saw that thread. No, I left it as is. I tend to play sharp so it's a positive thing for me that the mouthpiece tenon is longer
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Ok but how about low E and F, don't they get flat with this mouthpiece?
@@jimis3167 no more flat than when I pull out the barrel when playing other mouthpieces. Also, it seems to me that it has better throat notes than 13 series or/and when pulling out the barrel. However, they are still quite out of tune.
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Speaking of 13 series, tomorrow will arrive two M15 13 series. Will see how they play compared to non 13 series profile 88 I already have. I'm also waiting for Vandoren RT19 reed trimmer cause I need something like 3+ reed. Although It won't make number 3 like a 3+(more wood over reed's body) It'll be as close as I can get to that. With number 3 as they are I have intonation problem in middle C to F sharp notes, they become very flat because reeds are light. I hope reed trimmer makes them little stiffer and fix that while still having the flexibility and speed number 3 offers in playing.
@@jimis3167 Based on Montanaro's interview, 13 Series is designed to have a deeper baffle and a larger bore to produce a more dark, centered, yet mellow tone. That's why I prefer 13 Series I hope you will be happy with a new m15 and new more suited reeds!
I got the Evolution marble today and plays well with V12 number 3, they're little light but It sounds compatible with them. 3.5 are actually little heavy for It. Number 3 trimmed will be ideal. I'll make a video soon. It sounds really nice with silver BG tradition ligature and feels more comfortable than X0 and X5 which also surprisingly play more right with number 3.
How do you like it compared to M15 ?
@@alexeysclarinet9109 I probably like the Evolution with V12 number 3 more, I get more mobility and flexibility in my playing but will see that within time. Evolution mouthpiece earned Its place among my favourites, that's for sure, along with the M13, M13 Lyre and M15. Last place get the X0 and X5, even with number 3 they're not quite controllable like the Evolution is.
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Could be wrong but Evolution's beak also feels little narrower compared to X0 and X5 and I like that better, definitely not as narrow as Vandoren's profile 88 but better than other D'addario pieces.
@@jimis3167 got it, thank you!
@@alexeysclarinet9109 I already requested D'addario to make mouthpieces in 1.02 and 1.03 openings with long facing. They said will consider that. Would be super interesting because that rubber seems better quality compared to current Vandorens. Vandoren in the 70s and 80s had excellent pieces also made from rod rubber (now made of molded hard rubber). They had crystal ones and they also had similar material to marble Evolution, just in red/black rubber.
Have you heard It from Mark Nuccio? ruclips.net/video/LUaHzfod6ek/видео.html I definitely will play and upload It at some point, very much like It.
I really like how M30 sounds with these reeds. Really good match. Have you considered this as basic setup? Sounds colorful, big sound and easy to articulate compared to the other mouthpieces with these reeds.
M30 here definitely speaks the best (in terms of articulation). However, I prefer the sound of B40D (even with this reed that is hard for this mouthpiece)
@@alexeysclarinet9109 The B40D is a mouthpiece I used about 10 years ago, I even played Nielsen concerto with orchestra using it. I eventually moved on, even though I liked it, as there just isn't enough sound and it can sound slightly throttled/restricted to the audience. I ended up really liking M30lyre, great articulation but richer sound than M30.
@@DorothyOfTheWest thank you for your input! That's an interesting experience. For me it feels that B40D is stuffy but with correct reed it should project well, it has good high partials. Never played M30 Lyre. Great that you find mouthpiece for you!
D'Addario Reserve classic reeds might actually play better than V12s. I discovered I already had some since years ago. I tried them yesterday and response was amazing! Though I've heard they don't last as long but I prefer the easiest response possible on a reed, even if I have to get new ones more frequently.
Yeah, that's possible. Though I was not happy with them 😢
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Which mouthpieces you tried them on? The known ones you play in video?
@@jimis3167 BD5, M30, M15, B40D
@@alexeysclarinet9109 I think they work with Reserve x5, M13, M13 Lyre pretty well.

Do you think you could use number 3 V12 on the Evolution or would be too light for It? I see some reviews saying It plays well with lighter reeds.. Did you try V12 #3 on the Evolution?
It seems to me that 3 is a bit soft. Also, I don't have 3 now. Though I have 3+ Fedotov reeds that fall between Vandoren V12 3 and 3 1/2. So maybe I can give it a try with Evolution (I find it sounds not bad here at all)
@@alexeysclarinet9109 I hope you make a video playing that setup..
@@jimis3167 will do, I am interested as well how it will compare with B40D
@@alexeysclarinet9109 That's great!
@@alexeysclarinet9109 Vandoren really should have made 3+ strength in their reeds. 3.5+ V12 to me at least feel a little heavy for being mobile in playing. I think 3+ would be more useful over clarinetists and probably the sweet spot for many!
What ligature?
I don't remember. It's an old BG or Rovner leather ligature without any metal inserts
That's beautiful! Well done!!

M13 sounds amazing here and I currently have two of them. One is better than the other one and I think I like It even better than the M13 Lyre, though I'll play them further and see.
