@@WaxTheDolphin The planet - and the life here - has dealt with way worse things. Good old lady Gaia can handle a lot. Now most species of almost anything by themselves are rather ephemeral creatures, here now, gone tomorrow, but life itself just marches on, developing other forms when something previous kicks the bucket.

They don't literally mean the planet will be destroyed, but rather that the ecosystem will be drastically affected, if not obliterated.
FYI... the QR code shown at 5:43 actually works. When I scanned it, the name 'Garrity, John A' appeared on my phone screen, with the option to do a web search of that name. So, kudos to the production company for not just putting a fake QR code there. They clearly left it on the screen long enough knowing that people would probably want to try scanning it.

They did for like the first 45 minutes then realized he can’t do an American accent and shoehorned in some line about his family being Scottish

We're not gonna talk about how the entire movie stresses his need for insulin for his diabetes, but at the end he goes into a bunker with a week or less worth of it and he's in there for several months, no problem?
I guess it was just to make them not eligible and after that the movie decided it didn't care about the condition anymore!
unless they had some reason to have a years etc worth of insulin in their medical supplies, which I would see having if any women showed up pregnant and with gestational diabetes. kid should not have been in the last scene, or else he should have been very very skinny, as they should have been instituting the preinsulin treatment of diabetes.

@@Pastor_Hestrumpa not necessarily. Again, I could see them having a supply of insulin for temporary use, like pregnant women who develop gestational diabetes. They tend to only need insulin for a few months. And when you consider, babies would be very important. I think this is the only thing we disagree on.
I find it very believable that they would have enough insulin for one person? They turned people with chronic diseases away because that would be a huge burden if they had to take care of everyone's chronic diseases, instead of just potentially saving more lives. Taking care of one small boy that's already there is way more manageable, and surely they would have various kinds of medicine.
Yep. Sure, they might have medical supplies inside the bunkers, even years' worth, but for long enough to keep that kid alive until they again have the means to produce insulin? Did they have enough animals left that you could use them for the original way to do it? Especially since those animals might now be way too valuable to sacrifice for that as they'd need to keep enough to create a new population with enough genetic variation that it could stay viable. I think that under those circumstances that kid might have a few years left, but probably not enough to even grow into an adult.
The scene where the mum is dragged out the car and her son is essentially kidnapped by that couple - I found it super emotional to watch. I don't know how I could cope if I were in that situation.

That’s the whole reason they weren’t taking people with chronic conditions… all medicine has been wiped from the face of the earth.
However many people they “saved,” they’re not going to be producing insulin anytime soon.
After they used the kid’s diabetes as a plot point, they promptly forgot it existed. That was my biggest complaint with the movie.
Agree! The whole movie circulated around this matter. I will take it even further and say that the bunker didn’t hold any medicines of that kind at all.
Otherwise they wouldn’t have stopped them at the first place when they try boarding the plane.
You can’t get a bigger no than that, to deny a kid to live.
Insulin is very common medicine though. And they likely have loads of it stocked up there for old generals or presidents. 😂

Making insulin is no more difficult to produce than antibiotics.
Check out the Open Insulin Project. They're trying to make it accessible enough that people can eventually produce it themselves.
It would not be hard to create insulin at the end of this movie. The only reason it is so prohibitively expensive in the real world, is because of greedy pharmaceutical companies.

Can we talk about how this family drove from GA to Canada in a fraction of the time that trip would actually take? Or the fact that they were significantly farther from the big European impact in their hometown of Atlanta than they were in Greenland? It's like these writers have never seen a map.

Well about the Greenland thing I believe it was stated the bunker is on place that will be less effected from earthquake, also in Greenland there is the seed bunker that as all seed we know so the bunker is probably made of everyone that they need to recreate humanity
After watching the movie I couldn't help but go "Are you seriously telling me there is nowhere within the US that would've served better then this bunker in Greenland? With all the mountains and whatnot, many with existing military installations in them. Especially when the main impact ended up being in Europe, it's like they fled the safest place on the opposite side of the planet to go directly toward the impact site and hope the bunker holds.
The only range that wouldve worked is Rockies
The rockys are huge and i think the Appalachian mountains would work too
At the end of the movie, there's one broadcast from Argentina, implying that there are surviving shelters beside Greenland. It's likely that Greenland was reserved for US, Canada, Denmark, and some European countries, and it's one of the safest places from unrest.

I believe there's a wheel to spin in the writers' rooms for when it's time to add a child to the main or secondary cast. Seven-eighths of the wheel is loaded with anomalies and the one eighth is 'normal'. The kid can almost never not be having asthma, epilepsy, night terrors, diabetes, bronchitis, a physical disability, or a weakened immune system. It's used to create cheap tension for a few minutes when time is of the essence. Gotta run and dodge obstacles! Nope, hang on, Timmy is having an episode.
I mean most kids are sick….

@@RamNaima I can relate regarding the special edition of _Independence Day_ which nobody really knew existed. It was one favorite video tape (yes, I'm old) growing up but that was theatrical edition... however it did have a character named Troy, one of Randy Quad's sons, ill with some vague disease which came up twice. Added nothing to the storyline.
Fast forward to me copying a DVD from Netflix and watching it, turns out there are a bunch of deleted scenes and many contribute to Troy's vague illness: Addison's Disease or something similar. All it did was cause more scenes full of arguing. That's all. In short, padded runtime drama having nothing to do with anything. I'll stick to the original where it's only him puking and laying down. He's just sort of... there.
Just like the kid with autism in Predator Upgrade. 99% of time it‘s just a cheap gimmick to cause tension or create sympathy.

At the end, they show France a sunken crater since the comet hit near London. As in Paris is now underwater and does not exist. Yet, ten seconds later they show the required shot of the devastated Eifel tower.
The fact that their son gets kidnapped and the wife never tells him has always bothered me lol

The reason there were SO many news reports in this movie is because there was no side story about a governmental official or NASA scientist. I feel like the lack of exposition from a secondary plot made this film a lot more realistic compared to other disaster movies.
That's what more disaster movies need.

WHERE IS MAE NUCLEAR WINTER? It wound't just go away in just a few months after the impact
There is strong suspicion that the big piece that hit at the end was not actually 9 miles wide.
This movie was so much more realistic in scope than 2012, Deep Impact, or any of the other "oh god, oh god we're all going to die" films of the past two decades. Gerard and Morena just absolutely nailed their respective roles!!! And I love that they actually DIDN'T show the impact, but showed the aftermath of it.

THis movie was actually good, I had my doubts. The only thing I wish was different, was when the astroid impacted at the end. I wish we got more of the impact itself, the shockwave and destruction.
This video didn't make clear, where exactly did the comet land where the cities with the Golden Gate and Wrigley Field were burned to charcoal but Greenland was unscathed and was the safe place? "Much of Europe" was mentioned at one point but how could an impact devastating much of Europe reduce Chicago and San Francisco to ashes but spare Greenland?

Some geography buffs pointed that out in another video.
what I appreciate a lot is the kid character, he's actually smart. He makes a lot of good decisions. And I'm glad this movie relies more on character work than just cool special effects considering how low the budget is compare to most disaster movies nowadays that were above $100 million

Love your hilarious reviews, Jeremy, but you erred at 7:55 - the boy has type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, which is why he has the insulin pump, and it is not "easily manageable" without the actual insulin. Big difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2 (adult onset) the latter of which is brought on by poor diet and other factors, and can be easily taken care of. Type 1, though - without the insulin, the kid will die horribly. Essentially, he'd starve to death because his pancreas barely functions or is dead.
As a type 1 I can confirm. Lack of insulin can cause horrible physical symptoms. So can too much insulin. Just sleeping can become a death sentence if I bolus wrong on dinner. Living with type 1 isn't easy, although it is luckily manageable with modern equipment. I'm lucky to not be American so I can have a CGM and insulin pump for free.
Also, when it comes to the missplacement of the insulin: not every type of insulin is the same, and diabetics react differently to different types. There's fast acting insulin and slow insulin. And there are different types of both. So just having the emergency personnel point towards some insulin wouldn't work. That's why diabetics carry around their own insulin. If we could use just any insulin there would be insulin dispensers. Also dosage varies A LOT from one diabetic to another.
But, before this turns into an essay I'll stop ranting. I wish t1d awareness would spread a bit more so that people stop confusing it with t2d.

Oh John is way better in any way. Just to stop and think about it for a moment what Gerard accomplished: he help to blow up an full airport for going nuts about his family. And later on he demand seats on a small plane that might crash anyway due to overweight, it didn’t stop him from telling the pilot he would make them all die there and then.
The whole family was just deeply dysfunctional, it would be a better ending if the police locked them all up, to die in some kind of prison cell.

As a fellow T1 Diabetic this made me super anxious and yes insulin can be ok in room temperature for a while but it is highly advised by your diabetes educator or endocrinologist that it's kept refrigerated. My parents were told that so Butler's character is acting accordingly to how parents of a young diabetic usually would. Sin off

In my opinion, Greenland’s one of the better disaster movies. It’s up there with Dante’s Peak, Armageddon, and Twister.
I liked Twister even tho the physics of tornadoes were way off but Dantes peak was honestly pretty good I mean it has a good amount of filler but it's decent I guess

I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for a good movie, heck I like super hero movies, but they NEED to stop expecting us to just be ok with something heading towards earth unnoticed.
Steller astronomy (within or just outside our solar system) is EXTERMELY accessible. You can make a telescope that can see Saturn with enough resolution to make out the moons out of PVC pipe and stuff you have around your house. This isn't "we kept everyone who works at any space agency or telescope silent", 100s of millions of people world wide would see this thing and be able to calculate it's impact.
Because NASA likes to ... ya know, but sure about stuff, by the time NASA tells us something like this, people have been talking about it on astronomy message boards for MONTHS, and because their disclosure rules are different, ASI, DLR, JAXA, ISOR, and the ESA, all BILLION dollar agencies, have been publicly posting the raw telemetry data from the second they picked it up.
It's just too stupid. Takes me completely out of the movie.

A very underrated end of the world movie is,in These Final Hours.
That movie had me in tears, kinda like this one.

Yeah, an impact like that you're going to get massive earthquakes, tsunami, debris falling from the sky, wildfires and a cloud of dust that blocks out the sun. Then you've got the crazy weather that all that would generate. I would imagine most places would look like the area around an active volcano

I actually enjoyed this film.
I'm T1 diabetic, as soon as it's revealed the kids got it and on a survivors list I was shouting at the screen, just wouldn't happen. Especially in America where there's a long audit trail of health insurance and records.
The real sin her is how the movie pretends that this is a happy ending, as humanity is likely doomed to a slow and painful death, most especially the child, whose insulin WILL run out because the bunker was not outfitted to accept people with his condition and thus would have no stockpile of the medication, any facility able to create more is destroyed, along with likely nearly all stockpiles, and these people are stuck in a remote location in fucking greenland.
Yes the people accepted into bunkers are skilled and capable people in their fields, but what good is a scientist with no access to a lab, or a structural engineer without literally any ability to obtain the equipment or materials to do his job. Are these people capable of rebuilding from what is effectively a midevil state of rudamentary technology?
This is worse than if the walking dead found a cure for the virus, but the shattered remnants of humanity had to try and take out the entire zombie population to try and rebuild.

YES! I wanted you to do this movie! I know of a couple more sins.
1. The final fragment could not have been nine miles wide.
You'll see that as it was streaking towards its target, it didn't look anywhere close to being that big. Maybe one to two miles at the most.
I think that it may have indeed started out nine miles wide, but as it approached the Earth, it lost a large amount of mass.
You'll also note that the shockwave took a couple of minutes to arrive. It would have been an instantaneous arrival if the fragment had struck fully intact and would have been a lot more intense.
Also, if it had struck fully intact, no way would they be able to exit the bunker a mere nine months later.
2 Exactly how big are those bunkers and how many people can they accomodate?
At the base earlier in the movie, a soldier said something along the lines of "we have 2,000 people to fly out."
There are approximately 59 air bases in the U.S. and if each base was evacuating an average of 2,000 people, then roughly 118,000 people were evacuated to the bunker complex, and you can bet that more than a few of the women were pregnant.
We also have to take into account the staff members (no way would the bunkers not be manned by some sort of staff) and soldiers in the complex.
3. Something I've wondered ever since I saw the movie is why they were specifically flying people to a bunch of old bunkers up in Greenland when there were other options here in the states (Mt. Weather in Virginia, Raven Rock in Pennsylvania, Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, the FEMA bunker in Maynard Massachusetts, and the STRATCOM bunker at Offutt AFB in Omaha Nebraska).
I get that the film is specifically called Greenland and it would not have made much sense for the family to have gone to one of those other options and that those bunkers are specifically for government officials and VIPs, but it just seems odd that the government would choose to fly people all the way up there instead of having people stay closer to home.
Or could it be that the government was using those bunkers as well and the family just so happened to learn about the Greenland ones and decide to go there?
It’s a shit movie just…to many plot holes and lack of ideas. It’s probably the most stupid movie I’ve ever seen. Since it’s not a comedy they actually try to make it realistic. I feel a deep hate for this movie, and for the main characters, that they didn’t stop the producer from ruin a movie completely.

Thought this movie wouldn't be good, but was pleased it was. Love everything to do with the cosmos. One nitpick for Cinemasins. It's very plausible that Nasa didn't see it coming until it was too late. Comets and asteroids are very dark, even the icy ones. Trying to spot a dark object in dark space is nearly impossible.
don't we already radar the fuck out of space? or like, laser scan it? surely we can detect objects that aren't necessarily visible to the naked eye
@@unforgiven_91 yea but in cones and we cant do a full 360 all at once since the machines that do the scans are expensive and we cant put them in the middle of the ocean. It would probly take a while to get to scanning the small chunk of space that asteroid takes up. Space is fucking huge.
@@unforgiven_91 Our astronomers still struggle to find those dark objects. I've watched plenty of documentaries on them. They don't even have an accurate count on how many asteroids are in our own asteroid belt because they can't find them all.
@@unforgiven_91 thats not how radar and lasers works. To radar from earth all the way to even the moon, would likely take all of the electrical power on earth. Which wouldn't even be helpful. The longer the radar wave travels the less and less power returns to the sensor. And remember it has to be reflected at probably only a few % back to you and then make the return journey.
A 2x increase in range requires the energy to travel 4x the distance.
