We drive the Peugeot 308 GT Line and see what this small car is like to drive.
The Peugeot 308 is one of the best all-rounder small cars on the Australian market, even if it doesn’t sell in big numbers here. France’s answer to Germany’s Volkswagen Golf, the turbo petrol Peugeot 308 is refined, punchy, and handsome. It’s also about to be replaced by an all-new version, which will be revealed any day now. Shame you can no longer get the hot 308 GT and 308 GTi models!

Lots of negative comments. I've owed a 308 for a couple of years and it's been a fantastic car. Very reliable, well built and excellent car to drive. If you get your car serviced on time, and drive it like it should be driven it's likely you won't have many issues. Plenty of poorer quality cars than Peugeots on the Australian market. New 308 just around the corner. Absolutely ripping looking car. Peugeot aren't dead yet, far from it.
This car was the real turning point for Peugeot. A very decent bread and butter car that has proven very popular in Europe. Just a shame not many people knew about the hidden hot hatch secret -
The GTi version. There aren’t many lightweights made like that anymore..

Nice to see a Peugeot in Oz. The GTI version is actually really good. The french don't really believe in cupholders lol.
Great review. It's such a good car. Has aged well and is amazing value now! Hopefully Peugeot continue to spec and price well with the new model

Yes Tom I have one of these. 1.2 L Pure tech (Pure Crap) engine uses 1L of oil every 1,500 kms; a common issue in this model. The A pillar severely restricts vision. The torsion beam moves the rear end around and the first time this happened was very frightening. The French can't be bothered to move the fuses to the right sold they are in the glove box which will hold...a glove. The lever for the bonnet is in the door frame of the LEFT door so you have to open the door to get to the lever to open the bonnet! Too bad if you are parked close to something. The brakes are grabby and the pedal too high. The clutch is grabby. The gearing is incredibly tall and the thrummy triple IS evident below 2,200 rpm so forget 4th around town and forget 6th...at all. The car broke down once immediately after I filled it with fuel (didn't overfill). Yes the engine has loads of torque once moving and is very fuel efficient (6.5L in city and suburbs). The steering is fantastic and the car looks great. My base model has knobs and dials for the radio and climate but this is the ONLY model to have this (Access) and only had a 2 year model run so are rare. There was also a 110kw 1.6 4 cylinder petrol (very rare). French cars haven't sold well in Oz in decades. I get it. I'd never get another or a triple as a four is just so much better balanced. I understand why you were impressed with your test, but ownership is different.
Pity they dropped the GTi as it was a sleeper weapon.

I'm hopeful that the 2022 model offers a more powerful engine and will be hanging out for it, plus the improvements in tech/safety. My 2015 308 (wagon) is my favourite car I have ever owned, even with the couple of idiosyncrasies. I like the 508 too but it's a bit bigger and in the next price bracket. The 308 wagon gives the best of both worlds. It is a pity they don't sell more here.
I own one, a 2015 Allure Premium with 1.6T engine. Has been very reliable, great to drive and deserves to sell in much greater numbers. Looking forward to the new model too, looks amazing in Vertigo Blue colour.
my timing belt looked awful at 32000 miles! Car was just out of warranty but service changed it for free because it is considered to be their fault to be failing at such low mileage
I've owned mine about 5 weeks now. Was previously looking at GT Diesel or 1.6 turbo GT. So glad I picked the GT Line. I've always had trouble adjusting to electric power steering. But once you forget that springy off centre numbness this 308 shows itself to be extremely playful. My only concern moving forward is the cost of decent tyres.
Nice review. These are good cars. I loved my T9. Written off. Looking forward to another Peugeot. As nice as the new range looks, I'd rather just have another 308.

mine is the same as yours! the new p51 308 has grown in a way of Mazda 3 .Pathetic!
This is a great review and highlights the points that are worth mentioning with the 308 GT Line. I have a 2019 one of these and like it immensely! It’s fast and frugal and looks great. However, some of the plastics are questionable and often vibrate and rattle in the colder weather. Don’t let that put you off though, as I say, I really like mine and it drives great.

I had two great to drive but plagued with electric problems great shame because I loved the comfort, styling and the drive.

My mum loves hers, 2.0 diesel feels pretty quick too.
Good cars. Very frugal any way you look at it but the diesels especially so.

good honest review, psa in australia via their importer inchcape need to address the number of servicing centers and the cost of servicing which if compared to skoda must be some of the most expensive servicing in the world.....

Sorry if I missed this but what's been changed for the 2021 model?
This is a very good car. My main reservations are the list prices and the level of support I will get from a low volume importer. PSA also seems to do quick and dirty RHD versions so you are left with a fuse box in the glovebox and other LHD vestiges. There is also the risk that PSA may just leave our market so you end up with an orphan. I like it, but would not risk owning one.
PSA isn't anymore and stellantis is born of the fusion with FCA, I don't think FCA is going to leave Australia soon
@@clementbouvard8457 Yiu are right, no more PSA. However that does not change the tiny volumes that Pugs sell in Australia. This puts the future of the product at risk and also means that technical support will be more challenging. It is a shame as the car is excellent.
Good review, just a correction: this 308 (T9R) homologates (VDA 210-2), the volume of 420 dm³ or 470 l and includes the space under the boot floor (removing the spare wheel or the anti-puncture kit).
Without considering this extra volume of 22 dm³, the volume of the visible area alone (VDA 210) is 398 dm³.
Remember that some manufacturers indicate the volume of the trunk in VDA 210 and in dm³ (200x100x50 mm parallelepiped block), while others VDA 210-2 and in liters of water.

People that have the steering wheel at a high position usually don't use the right hand positions for an optimal reaction time (quarter to three).
I got this one in Style trim by the end of 2020 with 1.5l bluehdi 130hp engine. I was looking for small hatchback and besides 308 i tried:
Mazda 3 2.0l 122 HP ( too slow )
Focus Ecoboost 1.0 125 HP ( not economical )
Astra 1.5 diesel ( 3 cylinders diesel !! )
So, 308 come as most completed package comparing, equipment, economy, performance and price.
If anyone needs honest owner opinion I will be more than happy to help.
Hello. I want to ask a question that Have you ever experienced any issues about adblue tank in 308 1.5 bluehdi?
@@mertbabacan9449 I got a new car and till now I did 12k km, so far no issues. I believe Adblue tank issue was present till 2018
@@shone8866 i heard some 3008 1.5 bluehdi’s have those issues. I have 2019 308 1.5 and got anxious about living this problem because service told me that if i’d have a problem with adblue tank and vehicle was not officially serviced, tank bill would be on me. But i think this issue is chronical; regardless unofficial care, peugeot is like acting irresponsibly.
@@mertbabacan9449 honestly, I seen quite a few Peugeot with 1.5 hdi and none of them had any issue with Adblue tank. My friend is taxi driver and he has well over 300k on the clock
@@shone8866 oh god that mileage is remarkable. So well, do you recommend adblue fill up only at services or other urea products as shell’s or bp’s etc. at gas stations?
Peugeot 308 has shifted to an electric gear selector since 2017, why do we still use the traditional one?
Dunno, but I prefer a physical shifter anyway to be honest
Have had 4 x 306s, the cabriolet, the 5 door Xsi hatch, the 3 door s16 hot hatch followed by the 3 door gti6 hot hatch, the latter my pic... can’t understand why the current 308 never came to Australia as a 3 door or convertible? Maybe the new gen 308 will bring back the options?
They don't make them anymore sir. You can't buy 3 door Golf too, unless you go for previous generation.
Cost cutting.
Unfortunately the trend/mainstream has put cars like the golf and corolla far above the 308 in sales, but the 308 is every bit as good if not better and the new 308 is following suit, not to mention it's arguably the best looking hatch on the market now.
The new one will definitely follow the new design philosophy of fang lights in the front and the rear design... Why would anyone buy the outgoing one? Better to wait.
The spy pics we've seen indicate to me that the outgoing shape is more classically handsome. But, as I am always at pains to say, design is subjective. You like what you like.

This outgoing model will be a VERY good buy over the next year before it’s replaced as Peugeot are already doing huge discounts on them in my country. You’d be pushed to find a nicer brand new hatchback for £15k than a 130bhp 308 GT line..
If only we can get this kind of engine into a Mazda 3 sigh

308 is a fantastic car. What really annoys me is the teenage reviewer using inches as his method of measurement. Dude your 14… the metric system came in during the 70s

Depreciation? You want to drive a hard bargain at purchase time. Reliability? Decent. Know quite a few long term happy owners.

I have a 1,6 HDI EAT6 from 2018 and drove 130.000 km without any big issues.
It is not 2021 Peugeot...
The new 308 is better.
Climate control buried deep within the infotainment but I cant play with my phone while driving.
I love the look of the 308 but the absolutely abysmal quality of their products is why Peugeot does not sell well in Australia.
And this is despite the supposed increase in quality.
I hope the next generation is better but I will never make the mistake of buying a Peugeot again.

Well that’s completely false. I worked for Hertz for several years and we had loads of these on the fleet. Having cars thrashed constantly by loads of different people on a daily basis would wear out any car far quicker than normal and yet none of the Peugeots on the fleet missed a beat other than normal servicing intervals. Furthermore, they’ve also appeared near the top of the latest reliability surveys too, the 3008 actually scoring number 1 just last year. You’re using a very outdated view on Peugeot from 20 years ago. Get with the times.

As the owner of a 2016 Pug that needed plenty of warranty work for repeated interior leaks, faulty seat belts, wayward HVAC that often stopped working for days, finally culminating in a manual gearbox that needed to be rebuilt at only 44000km due to 'soft' shift forks that meant it would drop out of gear and was essentially undriveable, I am talking from personal experience.
I am not the only one affected by Peugeot quality as any time spent on Peugeot specific Facebook groups or Club websites will attest.
And the kicker? Peugeot in Australia not offering any support at all, because the car was a few months out of warranty, preferring to blame me and demanding I sign a document to pay for any repairs if it was confirmed to be my fault.
Fortunately I did get an extended warranty when I purchased the car and it was clear the gearbox failure was from manufacturing defects and not the fault of my driving.
After 5 months without the car due to the replacement parts being faulty just like the original shift forks and everything being shipped by sea not air, I no longer enjoy the car and certainly will not ever do it again.
Did anyone from Peugeot reach out to me during this process? No, not at all. And that, to me is more damning than the poor quality itself.
@@limewhite71 mine isn't an opinion though it's actual facts because that's literally what happened when I worked for Hertz. No issues with any of the Peugeots. You just got unlucky with yours which is one model whereas we had hundreds of different ones on the fleet which represents a wider scale of reliability 🤷♂️🤷♂️
You had a bad experience - but the 2019 JD Power survey backs up what VinDiesel is saying. German car reliability is a myth.
OMG... Believe me, If you buy Peogeot, the hell gate will open. Peugeot is not mechanically stable. The worst thing is in their customer relations attitude as well. Especially the Peugeot Australia is very very highly ignoring and irresponsible after sales. I am 100% sure being anti-Peugeot.
I've got this model Peugeot and I've had nothing but bloody problems with it don't waste your money by German cars much better
Are you by any change a VW dealer? Just kidding, what issues have you had. I own my third Peugeot and have been pretty happy with them.

I've gotta say, I actually owned a Merc C Class 180 Kompressor and that was more unreliable than my 207! The Peugeot for sure, I had to spend a little when I got it, but that was due to the fact of how poor the previous owner had kept it. But other than that, it's been fairly reliable! I've not really had any major issues. But in regards German cars and their reliability, they aren't as good as most people think. They drive well and the interior quality is amazing, but reliability? It hasn't proved any special to me. If you want a really well made car that is ultra reliable? Japanese, especially Toyota and Honda.
@@Marco-iy7lt Depends a lot on how much you use the car. I drove 150.000 km in the 207 and found it to be quite reliable and economical.
@@apn42 that's what I am saying. The Peugeot has proven to be more reliable than the Merc, which shows that the stereotype of where a car is from doesn't make it anymore reliable, only that we assume it to be more reliable.
1.6 turbo 110hp is the go. 3 cylinder engines are crap
