- ✅Having Trouble with your Grey Wash can be a common issue when getting into tattooing. Adding a bit of white to your grey wash can really help you out. SO lets compare the two fresh vs healed does adding white make a huge difference to your tattooing? And does it actually make it easier to see your grey tones? Well these are the questions I have had for a long time but just never got around to testing it out. With that said TODAY is the day we take the leap and see for our selves.

✅✅This is not opaque grey wash. I think there is some confusion around this as opaque grey washes have no water in them. They are black and white added to give the grey you want then packed into the skin like you would pack color in a color piece. This is black and grey wash with just 6 drops of white added to each cap allowing the tattooer to better see what each shade will look like in the skin. As you can see in the video the end result is not an opaque look its just softened a bit by the white in the lighter tones. I have been using the same setup since recording this video. I use this just as I would my normal grey wash this just allows me to see the tones better in the cap and maybe help me make better decisions because of it. I will have to use this set up for a while to really know if its something I want to use for good moving forward. Hope this helps and thank you for watching and supporting the channel!
Bravo for putting this out to the beginners I actually use this technique myself and you are right that it's not a opaque grey wash however these are opaque grey colors. That's why your able to lay it in just like color by packing it in and it stay the same time no matter how many passes you make. grey wash being just diluted black you can achieve 100% black using 20% by building it up making more and more passes makes it darker and darker, obviously you wouldn't do that Because of trauma but that's actually how you decipher grey wash from color. The second you take 2 colors to make another whether it's several tones or not tiss still color....
It's okay to call this an opaque grey wash or a whitewash. It's still cut with water and only toned with white to show the value of the grey. I think you're thinking of just a standard opaque grey how you're describing it.
That isn’t how that works. This is opaque grey. & people struggling, shouldn’t be using them instead of a grey wash. Opaque grey is much harder to get to stay &/or make look nice. Especially if you don’t know what You’re doing. Washes & opaque should be used together.
@@HorizonEyes this is not opaque I encourage you to look into opaque grays. This is not packed in like color. I use this everyday since then and it works just like it would without the 6 drops of white. It acts just like grey washes. Again you should look into a opaque gray set as it’s nothing like this setup.
@@ArtSomething I‘ve been using opaque greys for several years. This is the same thing. I don’t know what else to tell you. I‘ve done this & used premixed opaque grey. They both act the same, the only difference is this is slightly washed out opaque. 🤷♂️

Holy shyt!!!!!! You might have just cracked the code for me!!! My biggest issue with doing realism was that I couldn’t tell distinction between the tones once on the skin often causing me to over work the skin trying to achieve certain blends. Adding white helps me identity which tone to use immediately!! Thank you so much for this tip
To me it looks like with the white added made it better.. just black and distilled is a bit transparent to me..the white sorta fills in the gaps in the transparency and heals better and you can see the difference in tones. Good stuff bro

Great as usual, very informative.
Im thinking adding white must do something to the opacity of the shades (like in watercolours vs. guache) meaning the pure black+water washes will have abit more clarity since the skincolour breaks through the black to create the shade.
Not saying that one is superior to the other but standard wash should produce more clearity and greywash should be more consistent since skintones/colours vary but the grey reduces the variation in the end-result.
Also some or most black inks are made up of very saturated blends of other pigments so they will pull towards warm/cool especially after a few years or when blended with white. I have noticed adding a drop of red and a drop of blue in a full cap of black often looks nicer than just using the black out of the bottle.
Tried this with Panthera "the gloom" and Dynamic Triple black.

I've tried this technique.. few years back.. out of just curiosity and a kind of bored of the norm interest I guess.. it didnt change much for me if I'm honest.. the white sinks.. the black/diluted blacks rise.. so you end up with the same thing.. looks great initially.. but made v lil difference for me personally.
Often of recent years I do personally often (not alwats) like to add a couple of drops of opaque grey to my black & my diluted tones .
(Note: as with adding white, opaque greys will also sink after a while.. so be aware. May need to stirr a few times during session.)

Using medium sized cups ..
Black (outline & triple x) - 2 drops dark opaque.
Dark grey - 2 drops dark opaque
Medium grey - 2 drops medium opaque
Light grey - 2 drops of lightest grey opaque.
2 x Diluting ink cap also.. to thin out & lighten further if needed.
I also put out a cap of intense platinum dark and light.. (I find it great when I want a slightly different tone in the greys..
I also like a cap of lightest grey opaque available in my set up as I find it great for highlights, over just using white which "can" (not always) yellow over time, especially if seriously packed in, it is more apparent next to grey wash tones if it does. (others may disagree.. just my opinion/experience) .. the lightest grey creates a good highlighting tone.. 👌🏻
I find the addition of a lil opaque in my washes in pieces really helps with the look of the healed work.. I've never really been one to conform, I'm not a purist. F that.. I like to do what works for me and whatever looks best and creates work the clients love.. a lil opaque in the grey washes seems to get em in alot quicker to.. and it doesnt mean you cannot use pure grey wash in your gradients with no opaque added still.
I find the addition of a couple drops of opaque darkest tone in my blacks really gives a good smooth well saturated finish.
I will just state though that if you've not used a set up like this before.. go gently.. as the more passes you make it can easily build up to a heavier saturation of the pigment tone.. but, with practice and fine tuning.. I've found it to be a fantastic way to work. Heals absolutely beautiful to .. works really nice when shading into and off black.
A lil drop of turquoise in each cup, alongside the opaque greys can also produce a really beautiful blue grey tone to work with.. it heals to a very aesthetically pleasing look.
There are no rules.. only the ones you choose to be conformed to.. think OUTSIDE the box of normal.. be unique.. try stuff out.. on yourself first if your curious
Just MY earned experience though 🤷♂️🙂 others may.. and can.. disagree.. we all work a lil way different.. that's what makes us creative artists.

Imo I think no matter what diluting any of these with water just makes the healed look like it's faded, not gray, just faded black. Could you try this exact same process again with JUST drops of black and white? It makes sense right? You just color with 100% color? This would be a dope tattoo RUclips science experiment 🎉
I love been using the white drop method since Mike Devtues book came out like 15 years ago . Works great , when I was younger I felt like I was cheating for some weird reason . Lol . Tends to hold up better over the years , I guess because of more ink pigment saturation

One thing I can’t help but think about is that it shifts the technique in application. Takes the concept of a grey wash tattoo to a color tattoo with more focus on blends than soft shades/gradients. I speak from my experience using the Eternal opaque grey 20-70% set and how it goes in, heals, and holds over time. Definitely use those when I want a more bold and saturated color look in a bright piece (as opposed to the look you’d get from a soft grey wash).
Also, we know how white holds up when you pack it in over a large surface area quantities..can’t help but wonder if a “b&g” tattoo done using this method would shift toward a yellow tint over time with sun exposure. Not knocking, just some food for thought for the people thinking about trying this out. Love the videos man!
It absolutely does change the method of application. It's been a learning experience to say the least
It shouldn’t change the application if you’re only using 4-6 drops of white in your gray wash. Should be able to tattoo like you do with regular greywash.
If he would have mixed only black and withe ink without the water then yes it would be like a color tattoo and you would need to change your technique.
I started to use this method 3 months ago, and it’s made my shading smoother.

Hey bro, big fan of yours. Question, have you ever tried a drop or 2 of mauve in your deep black to add a little maturity to your dark tones? I picked that trick up some years ago and it took my black shade to a whole new level. Semper fi.
@@rest_in_pain think like deep burgundy or more of a reddish purple. It adds a little more value to the tones when they settle in the skin over time. It is really cool because ink always stays liquid under the skin.

You could do it once with the white and just take a picture and stick it above your station
You should try true grey, mixing black and white.
I would love to dry that as its pretty much like packing color at that point. Only thing is I dont know of a good setup like white to black for each shade. If you know of a good setup ill deff try it out.

i was taught this a long time ago, so it was doing it this way or writing #1-6. in front of my caps so i can visually see 1 lightest 6 darkest.

The less you know the more ink caps and formules you need..and most likely it won’t work. Never heard a word about speed and depth in your video! With one black, one greywash, and hand technique the job is done.
In college i was practicing black and white makes gray how to make different types of black I get free college tuition my GPA trying fix it didn't was in to tattooing
From what I've heard it's not black and grey if you add white to it. For me it's just remembering how I set up my inks from dark to light. That's the easiest way for me to get the different shades. As an observation, your complexion is on the pale side. Do you think the results would be any different on darker skin? Great video, and props to your leg!
Your VERY CORRECT I am extremely pale lol and im sure it will be a bit different on darker skin just as normal grey wash needs to be adjusted for skin tone. Thanks Adam appreciate the support my friend! 🤘🙏
The results would be the same, just adjust your shading contrast based on whatever skintone you're working on. I use this system with all my black and grey and it goes in the same as regular grey wash regardless of skintone; you get your gradients built up more quickly with the addition of some white in the mix.
