The guy is funny, intelligent and talented, but he is no better than any politician. Do you serious want any more disingenuous actors in parliament then we already have? We don't need our parliament any more ridiculed, marginalised, and discredited. Our MP's are in charge of our lives, or deaths if we don't sort these people out, and it does not get more serious than that. Over time we have to rid ourselves of these corrupted slime, by getting far more active in politics, hopefully repairing our almost terminally damaged society, as well as our personal moral standards, or we are collectively going to authoritarian hell in a hand cart. As far as politics is concerned, if we don't take back control of our own democratic process, what remains of it will continue to be undermined by people such as Al Murray. Until we will end up possibly begging for unelected faceless bureaucrats to take control of our destiny. Many people have found themselves in this kind of position before, and found themselves to be either dead or horrifically enslaved shorty afterwards. The entire western World is teetering on the brink of social, economic, financial, and political armageddon. If it finally goes over the edge, many of us will start to envy the people of the 3rd World, only to find that we are going to be physically stopped from going there.
@@garypowell1540 we are controlled by politicians when we should control them. Most Third world countries are the rich countries. UKIP ever hitting anyone is a joke in itself. Nick Clegg been a joke long before UKIP took interest in him and Russel Brand, since he is not running does not really matter.
It's surprising to see so many extreme comments on here. Everyone seems to be either pro or anti-Al Murray. It's quite funny, really. At the end of the day though, what combines all the posts seems to be this-regardless of views, there is a joint knowledge that the system has flaws. Quite big flaws. I think what Al is doing is not something of bad intent at all. Some people have stated that it "makes a mockery out of democracy." And, in all fairness, I do understand where they are coming from. Because in some ways, it does. However, I think the message being sent here is that "democracy" itself is something shared for all-not just the politicians. He is not "threatening" the system-merely challenging the ways which it has developed into something that, in reality, does not have much to do with the public any more, save the voting. For at the end of the day, like many intelligent individuals know, the people are a powerful force when driven by powerful emotions. And individuals, especially the British, throughout history have campaigned for the rights in which they deserve. This is why the system exists in the first place-because of the collective "people" of our nation. And when "their" system starts to seems to get alien to them, and obscured through political eyes-that is something to be careful with. We will see how the people of Kent view the system with their voting; who knows what will happen. At the end of the day, regardless of personal views-this type of political campaign will certainly be interesting to watch.
Even though I live in Bognor Regis I will still vote for Al! I will write his name on the form and that is legal. A bloke in the snug told me that it was enshrined in the Magna Carta! :-)

Perhaps Al Murray has calculated that the BBC will love him for this and give him some work, (as they are the front runners in squeezing UKIP & Farage out of the media at the moment - except when it's a story they can ridicule them with). But after the elections regardless of the results, UKIP will still be in there, still growing in popularity, and in the years to come as more and more people realise the ridiculous mess and the loss of independence Britain has got itself into by being in the EU, people will look back on moments like this and feel ashamed that they let the media & celebrity become so powerful just through the medium of comedy mixed with insult ; Disgusted that they let the media run and decide their lives for them; Shocked that they were fooled by the likes of Russel Brand, Ian Hislop, Russel Howard, and of course, Al Murray telling us all what we should be thinking and who we should be voting for.

People inclined to vote Conservative, Labour or Lib Dem will probably do so; Murray won't divert them, so those parties won't be damaged by his candidacy. However, he might damage UKIP by diverting that proportion of its voters who would vote for it as a protest against those three parties. Murray doesn't earnestly want to be elected to parliament, and is standing in the absolute conviction that he won't be; he's making a point (and, maybe, promoting his current tour that ends in May).
