That game is /seriously/ forgotten, these days & doesn't deserve to be... Shame we never got another Punisher game or even an HD-re-master. Which,I would GLADLY accept over a new game,actually... I would think it would be the EASIEST game to make modern! It's the most-basic concept in gaming,"guy w/ guns/other weapons, gets revenge by killing the bad guys". Seriously,it must be stupid licensing-reasons holding it up. Otherwise,WTF is keeping it from coming-back?? Anyways, glad U brought it up. "Spezial Interrogations" was 1 of the 1st YT-vids of the game I ever saw & I remember it showing EVERY kill,w/ a heavy/industrial metal song, playing in the BG(it was "hardcore",for early YT)... It was probably 1 of the 1st vids posted about that game,in general & I always recall that awesome vid(helps I saved it & watched last year at some point). Sadly,it was only in StandardDef,like 480p. & looks nearly to be rendered in pixels! Also, unfortunately,I'm pretty-sure it's long gone,by now. But,if it came-back,maybe it could be up-scaled somehow, using modern-tech?? Anyway, just bringing it up,in case any1 else recalls the vid/uploader of it. When i was 8 or something i watched gta vice city stories the first time at my cousin's house and i was immediately hyped. Seeing an endless open-world with shit to do was so mindblowing as a kid.
Back in my day, other teens were waiting and asking strangers outside a liquor store to buy them booze. I was outside gamestop waiting for someone to buy me leisure suit larry.
I remember South Park - The Stick Of Truth also really offending people (especially Randy's abortion section). I remember them stripping certain sections from the game depending on where you live.
I remember playing Conkers Bad Fur Day as a kid and going, “I can’t let my parents see this otherwise they will take this game away!” Looking back at the game now it’s pretty tame, funny and kinda stupid but back then I thought I was really getting away with something
It’s crazy to see how the pendulum has shifted with what’s “offensive”. Violence, sex, drugs, etc seem to be negligible in video games and movies anymore. Meanwhile any simple language or themes used is WILDLY misinterpreted and people call for heads to roll if they’re personally offended. It’s bizarre
Bully's TITLE CAUSED A CONTEOVERSY WHEN IT WAS RELEASED the pendulum hasn't shifted at all its just these easily offended people have a louder voice thanks to better internet and guess what game devs usually don't care because the amount of easily offended people doesn't affect their bottom dollar their customers don't fucking care most time and even the fans that do care still buy the game
@@Dovah_Slayer mehh i agree that the voices are louder because of social media but also our culture has embraced anti-harassment to an extreme where free speech no longer exists. So yes it has shifted. People used to be concerned about offensive and harmful material for the greater good (from their perspective). Now it’s “offensive” because a handful of squeaky wheels hold the fire to companies for personal clout or to make them personally feel better, not others.
I think the No Russian level works as a storytelling device pretty well actually. I think it does a good job of emphasizing the moral price that an undercover agent has to pay in order to not blow their cover. Also it clarifies to the player that the attack was intentionally made to look like it was done by a different group of people.
First time playing Manhunt I was like 10. It was the scariest thing I'd experienced back then, to a point that I was shaking playing it! But It wasn't just the gore and executions, it also had that unsettling creepy atmosphere.
I watch this channel religiously it still amazes me they come up with fresh and actually cool topics EVERYDAY. Shoutout to the crew at Gameranx you guys make being a gamer that much more fun 💯💯
I actually never played Bully and it's one of those dusty digital downloads sitting in my library. Would really enjoy seeing a retro-review by the Gameranx team
I remember the Man Hunt controversy being on the news in the UK. As soon as my mum saw it she called me down and asked if I had the game or not. I said I didn't and I made sure she never found it.
I remember playing it and deleting it because it was just so boring and generic looking. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I do know a lot of people who loved it which is why video games are so great, one person's Mehh game is another person's Mind-Blown experience 😋
I LOVED both Conkers Bad Fur Day AND Manhunt. I played them both religiously. After trading off my copy of manhunt for some money one week, (with full intention of buying back the next week), I was recasted to find they took it from the shelves before I could get it back. I remember that game fondly, but everytime I see footage of it now I can’t believe how polygoned it looks, I remember it looking so cool. So it’s probably for the best I can’t play it anymore and not ruin the memory. Haha.
It's normal to discover that old games look like crap. Your brain doesn't really "remember" the past, it keeps a mathematical construct of it. So when it reconstructs, it uses whatever remains from back then - positions of people, general clothing, etc. An example - if you try to remember how the soldiers in Prototype look, you would almost certainly remember them with the wrong uniform, as your brain will just toss in the best thing it can come up with to fill in the natural gaps in the memory. Those are always there, as the brain tosses away uninteresting things like small details that are not pivotal to the memory. You can remember the soldiers using M4, but which M4 model from all the games you've seen it would be? Noone knows. It's kinda fun, as it points out just how little we actually care about the graphics in the long run.
Regarding Bully, the game has a lot of social commentary about both Public and Private schools in the Western World, yes not just the USA, as well as how we deal with the bullying problem over the decades, how Adults perceive adolescents and how adolescents view authority figures in general, and how each young individual sees themselves in the world. Also, yes gameranx, you guys should definitely should do a retrospective on the game or something.
Oh I remember that! Modern Warfare 2 sequence. I felt so bad partaking in that act. I replayed that sequence on very hard thinking the civilians would then be armed. But they still weren’t… I had to live through it again
That would've made for an excellent twist! Too-bad we don't have /that/ version to play... Maybe someday, someone skilled-enough as a modder, will be able to do something like that. Tho,likely,copyright-related nonsense will always prevent it. Or,by the time it doesn't,it will be so far in the future,we'll have bigger concerns... Still, would be nice to see, before then... ;) Great idea! :D -Peace
Postal 2 at the time was definitely not 'boring'. It was quite fun and the multiplayer was ok too. It should be higher though on the list. It was way more gruesome than most games on the list. You could light people on fire, then piss them out while they're entire skin would be fire wounds. They'd be crawling away on the floor until they passed out and died. It was banned in my country, Netherlands, which made a lot of sense.
How dare you play videgames about guns thats evil! Here, have easier access to a real gun and no permit or I.D. required for purchase instead thats clearly safer
I would love some more Bully content. It is one of my favorite games of all time. I remember being quite young when I rented it at Blockbuster as a joke because my brother and I thought it was a silly anti-bullying game, but it ended up being amazing.
I think games don’t push boundaries like they used to and I kinda miss it, while yeah it depicts some horrible events they aren’t real and it can add to the story if it’s done well
I want to see a top ten of “mindless games.” Games you can just jump into with no pre-knowledge or skill. Just games you start and get into real quick.
I wasn't expecting such a wholesome comment here, but that's a good idea nonetheless. Whenever I'm in a mood like that, I go for Audiosurf. Recent gems include Dorfromantik & Cloud Gardens (by the same developer). If you can't sleep, try Mountain (not much in the way of gameplay going on there) or Flower. The old Simcity games could be pretty soothing. What Remains of Edith Finch is awesome for its atmosphere & story. Blind Eyes is intriguing and well presented, but not for everybody. Driving around in one of the Train & Truck sims can be nice, just like tinkering with SimplePlanes, but these technically do require some base knowledge & actions.
What bugs me the most is that here in Germany, if there's a controversial game, they sometimes release a special "low violence" version of it. And that's it. No, you do not get to choose. No, there are not two versions of the game - one for under and one for over 18. So they basically cut my right to play the game as intended because of "youth protection".... silly enough: they sometimes slap an "USK ab 18" (Germanys version of the M rating) on it anyways. It just defies logic.
not only controversial games, but games "someone" saw inappropriate for... , well, german adults? Even games like Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor, or even Team Fortress 2 had cut german versions, Call of Duty: world at war was missing the whole zombie mode in the german version, Dead Island and Dying light couldnt be bought in Germany, same goes for Dead Rising. the worst part is: these were the "good old days", now you cant even view or buy the "controversial" games anymore, if you look at steam you cant even view "adult" games on steam, but ads for gambling sites that are for 18+ only can run all day in TV. I really hate the hypocrisy here in germany...
My brother and I LOVED Conkers bad fur day!! Beat it together. The multiplayer was awesome!! Control teddy's or squirrels in D Day type set ups. Would love a remaster to play it again.
My dad bought me gta 3 when I was 10. He watches me play it for 5 min, says "I probably shouldn't of bought you that game", he shrugs his shoulders and leaves the room. Parents back then were really in the dark about the content of video games
Only controversial game back on the day that had an effect on me was Six Days in Fallujah. I was so pissed when they canceled it mostly because I was motivated af and getting ready to enlist in the marines already lol. Cant wait for it to finally come out after more than a decade of waiting.
Back in the day Carmageddon caused a huge stir and got banned, both the 1st and 2nd game. Kids around the school yard went nuts trying to get pirated copies of it. For a while Bully and CS were both prohibited. Real weak reasoning too.
Sometimes when I see snipets of gaming history, it amazes me that video games survived at all, let alone turned into what they are today. We've been through a lot, ladies and gentlemen.
Yeah games have really changed since the 1970s. I think the 90s were the decade of innovative ideas, the early 2000s was the decade of pushing the limits of video games, and the late 2000s thru today has been the decade of bringing video games to life in a realistic way.
@@Joreel plus to think it basically all started when some guy made virtual table tennis, it's amazing looking back at the Atari because that thing is so simple by today's standards of course, but of course it was such an advancement for the time to bring gaming into the home like that And now look where we are The power we hold in storytelling through games like The metro trillogy God of war Ghost of Tsushima Red dead redemption The last of us Mass effect Resident evil The list could honestly go on forever with games,

Played LSL2 on a floppy disk when I was like 6-7 years old (think my 11 year old brother got a copy from the local PC nerd)... then we lost the Xerox'd copy of the Girls photos/numbers that was like a password/form of copyright protection back then
Manhunt is an absolutely intense, fresh take on what a horror game can be. It's world and story is mature, graphic, and refuses to lighten up its morbidly dark tone. The game trusts players to have a tolerant mindset for its commentary on some of society's most despicable man-made horrors. The series deserves a comeback.
Thumbs-up! U said it PERFECTLY! I rarely have so little to say,but U echoed my sentiments /exactly/! :D More than any other series(besides SilentHill, R.I.P.),this series deserves another release. Or,at the very least,re-masters w/ just better graphics & maybe,if possible,a blur-less ver. of MH2(I wish)... The only other thing to say,is that the "film grain" effect should,at the very least, remain an OPTION for those wanting it. And,even an option to play w/ the original graphics,switch-able,on-the-fly,like was done for HALO Legendary edition, would be /really/ nice... ;) In any case, the series should NOT be left gathering dust, like it is. Such a shame. But,given the way the gaming industry treats such adult subjects/concepts,I'm not really /that/ surprised nothing has been done,so far... : / -Peace
With Bully, I remember all the faux-outrage and virtue signalling from self-righteous do gooders. Back then the term virtue signalling didn't exist, obviously. XD I remember a writer absolutely going HAM on all the haters, asking "did any of these people bother to actually play this game for themselves? It becomes evident within the first ten minutes that this game is about standing up to bullies, not BEING one" and making other good points. Ah, the days when journalism was still journalism. XD
Postal 2 is one of my favorite games ever and it aged like fine wine (it also has a 96% approval rate on steam so I'm not alone on this), I think everyone should at least give it a try. It's absolutely hilarious, the shootings feel satisfying even to this day and all of the areas in the game are so unique and every corner of them feels great to explore because you never know what you are going to find (and there is usually something worth finding no matter where you decide to go). The author of this video deserves to share his opinion but I feel like in this case he should say that it is only his take on it because this game was and still is very well received by the vast majority of people who played it
Conker's remains relatively unknown to many, and while I haven't experienced Bad Fur Day, I did play Live & Reloaded probably about 20 years ago on the Xbox. It showcased impressive remastering ahead of its time, and the multiplayer aspect was so enjoyable. I've accepted the series fading away, I prefer it to be remembered and valued, rather than becoming a fragmented echo of its former self like Halo.
Man, I remember as a kid I saw a video of a Bully Alpha trailer or something like that where it was very similar to GTA. There were some real guns and one scene had Jimmy riding in the back of a limo doing a drive-by. Not sure if it was real or a fan thing or maybe just part of the media frenzy but it was sick.
We need a Bully sequel!!!!

I played the first GTA and I remember people constantly trying to run over lines of monks for high scores and the utter carnage. It felt like playing something that wasn't like anything else. The press slammed it. Even more than Carmageddon (which wasn't in any way as fun).
@@itotallyagreewithyou3451I agree, but for me, the "new world" was vice city.
people say this shit about every game from that era. its not because they were particularly good but because we miss being young with no responsibility. in reality gta 3 is kind of barebones and ass.

Surprised The Punisher game from 2005 isn’t on this list. That was one hell of a brutal and very fun game to play as a kid.
Anyway,just bringing it up,in case any1 else recalls the vid/uploader of it. Or,has a better-copy,that could be posted,someday... ;)

I remember playing Conkers Bad Fur Day as a kid and going, “I can’t let my parents see this otherwise they will take this game away!” Looking back at the game now it’s pretty tame, funny and kinda stupid but back then I thought I was really getting away with something
I feel like the game was offensive for its time but as of now doesn’t really carry the same feel
Manhunt is such a great game. A third entry in the series would be awesome!
Leftie logic!
@@Dovah_Slayer Controversy is free publicity. Still, like he mentioned for Postal, the game still has to be good.
@@Calekoflight yeah
@@Dovah_Slayer mehh i agree that the voices are louder because of social media but also our culture has embraced anti-harassment to an extreme where free speech no longer exists. I think the No Russian level works as a storytelling device pretty well actually. I think it does a good job of emphasizing the moral price that an undercover agent has to pay in order to not blow their cover. Also it clarifies to the player that the attack was intentionally made to look like it was done by a different group of people.

@@Rokabur it would certainly be rated AO with modern day graphics. Add in The Last of US 2 level gore and it would fuck up a lot of people mentally
Thanks for the detailed description ❤
Regarding Bully, the game has a lot of social commentary about both Public and Private schools in the Western World, yes not just the USA, as well as how we deal with the bullying problem over the decades, how Adults perceive adolescents and how adolescents view authority figures in general, and how each young individual sees themselves in the world. Also, yes gameranx, you guys should definitely should do a retrospective on the game or something.

Yeah, RDR2 learnt allot from bully, the game was ahead of its time
Not underrated by anyone who has played it.

More than any other series(besides SilentHill, R.I.P.),this series deserves another release. Or,at the very least,re-masters w/ just better graphics & maybe,if possible,a blur-less ver. of MH2(I wish)...
The only other thing to say,is that the "film grain" effect should,at the very least, remain an OPTION for those wanting it. And,even an option to play w/ the original graphics,switch-able,on-the-fly,like was done for HALO Legendary edition, would be /really/ nice... ;)
In any case, the series should NOT be left gathering dust, like it is. Such a shame. But,given the way the gaming industry treats such adult subjects/concepts,I'm not really /that/ surprised nothing has been done,so far... : /

The author of this video deserves to share his opinion but I feel like in this case he should say that it is only his take on it because this game was and still is very well received by the vast majority of people who played it
manhunt, to this day, is one of my favorite games. I'm always hoping for a remake.
