  • Original video from Matt Cochran synced with all radio comms (ATL ramp, ground, tower, DEP & APP). On Sunday January 18, 2015 Delta Flight 95, a Boeing 777, experienced a problem at the beginning of its takeoff roll, exhibited by smoke plumes behind the plane. Immediately after takeoff, the pilots declared an emergency, dumped fuel and prepared to return to KATL. All video is in sync with real-time radio comms.       @Tomasz Klisz The use of "souls" is to make sure that the pilot communicates every person on board including the crew. Sometimes, if they ask for number of persons, the pilot will include passengers and not crew.

      They are not exceptional at all. Airline pilots and atc are the same all over the world. It is a demanding job with demanding training which results in people who operate and behave a certain way.

      I think the pilot was appropriate. It should be commonsense (to me) that a pilot doesn't have adequate rear-view mirrors, and he can't very well see the landing gear, from the pilots seat. Personally. I wouldn't want to rely on Cameras if the wheels are starting to burn.

      @john maselli Backlit means the plane is lit with the light behind it. He thought it was beautiful despite not having the best lighting angle for photography.

      Are you confusing these guys with pro athletes?
      They do not make the " Big Bucks". Aviation is a middle class occupation - barely these days.
      It's also a very costly with pilots having to pay for much of their own training along the way.

    Fortunately, with a flight this long they likely had two crews. At Delta, the other crew occupies the jump-seats for takeoff and approach/landing. This really helps; handling an emergency return with a two man crew gets pretty busy. What usually happens is one backup pilot communicates with Delta: nature of emergency, intentions, gets a gate assignment if needed etc. The other backup pilot would brief the PAX about the status of the flight, intentions and whether an evacuation is expected and coordinate with the F/A's to ensure they're up to speed and ready for landing. This leaves the active crew more time to focus on flying the jet, running normal and abnormal checklists and working ATC. Thanks for the video Bob!

      bradley small dumping fuel reduces landing weight making it easier to land as well as theoretically reducing fire risk.

      YES I know that but can a plane land with a full load or even 1/2 a full load if it were a 747. Would there be no chance of a safe landing or would the wheel carriage crush even with a proper approach. Say it was impossible to dump the load for some reason.

      Thanks, sounds like a pilot answer. Sensible. I always wondered if a plane like the 747 or even a 737 if it became inverted in flight provided it was say at 25000 feet could it be flipped over to a normal flying attitude. Would the forces needed to flip it over be to great or would it run out of altitude before it could be done. My dad worked at Lockheed on the L1011 and said no but he was only a pilot in an snj fighter in the war. Not on a passenger jet.

    Very nice video of the Delta 777 emergency. I believe the situation was handled extremely well by the Delta pilots and ground emergency vehicles. If any discrepancy is observed relative to the aircraft, an emergency landing is indicated. The flight crew did an outstanding job in handling the emergency!

      Not how it used to be.
      Everything is so high tech they're basically baby sitting the autopilot and do manual take offs and landings to avoid dying of boredom.
      Almost every possible scenario has a check list, they diagnose the problem and follow the directions. Remaining calm and confident under high stress IS the key feature of a seasoned Captain. Yeah, they're boarder line arrogant for the same reason a heart surgeon is. They are the ultimate poker players, when the chips are down they are cooler than a cucumber.
      Source- dad is a c-130 chief flight instructor. I've been in a few dangerous situations with him, not related to aviation, and something just clicks where the emotion leaves and logic and control of the situation trumps any fight ot flight response. They're very well trained to say the least, especially retired military...

      I sincerely hope if I'm ever in an airplane emergency that's not how it's done. Nobody seemed to know anything. They kept asking the pilot what his emergency was when they are the very people who reported it to him! Once on the ground, they weren't even planning to send rescue trucks until the Pilot told them he would like to have them there.

      @@marksharrock1339spoke to at least three separate controllers, who may or may not have been given the nature of the emergency by the other controllers by phone. An aircraft in emergency is not something you guess at. If you are not sure, you ask until you are certain, that's the best way to help the crew, by understanding the situation and being available to the crew. The other thing t keep in mind is this, the controller is not seeing the aircraft, they have radar contact and radio contact, they don't have a nice video of the plane to watch. The controller asks the pilot for what he needs once on the ground to be certain of the pilot's intention as well as what resource he would need in response to the request. Keep in mind the pilot is also talking with Delta, and they may have come up with a plan that the controller is not aware of. The pilot said they were going to stop on the taxiway clearing the runway. He said nothing of his intention or desire, the controller asked so they can be certain. Again with a plane in emergency you do not guess, you ask. That way everyone is aware. Also notice on the video that R4 did not wait to be told to head to the aircraft, they self dispatched themselves from staging, also a standard practice for fire crews at an airport dealing with an aircraft that had smoke reported from it. This is exactly how everything should have been done. Clear communication in a calm voice, making sure the pilots have what they need to manage their emergency. This is exactly how it should go. PS: the original report of smoke from the wheels came from another aircraft, not the delta crew, and that crew was concerned for runway debris.

      Hahaha I read your comment before I heard it after they landed. I thought you were joking, then when I heard the pilot say that I laughed, then thought what the heck do you think he wants. Frik come take a look at this thing. Is it on fire, smoking, something broken. ATC should have just said first that emergency vehicles are behind you and we will keep you updated as to what they see.

    Effective concise communication is so important. That's what they teach in the military and in aviation (and other disciplines) as well. So many crashes and negative incidents have happened in this world because people didn't take the initiative to speak up, or couldn't communicate effectively.

    I certainly like the way Delta handled themselves...super cool...professional...as a retired B747 Capt & G550 Capt. its good to see my brothers in action. Can't say so much for the controllers, sorry, but they were more concerned with their paperwork.... The guy asks him the "nature of the emergency"...where the hell has HE BEEN?? Had it been me, with the luxury of arm chair quarterbacking....would probably have dropped the gear and done a "fly-by"....why? To make sure the gear would come down and if there was any fire/smoke. The "do you need any additional help?? Geezus...like they don't know they HAVE TO CHECK THE TIRE....hell....what do you think they are going to do? Taxi back to the gate so they can BLOW UP and take out the terminal??? I am curious if they landed overweight?? If this was going to Tokyo, we would need to burn a hell of a lot of fuel in the 747. Final thought: the comment from the Tower "I see smoke, not sure if its engine" was the kiss of death ... now, the Capt had NO OPTION (in my opinion)...in the future, the tower should be more professional in many areas. He should have said...."there is no observable smoke coming from the wheel that I can see"...his response sounded like a lady with a beehive hair-do having tea in the lounge poking her head out and responding to the crew....Geezus. help them!!! "yes, theres smoke....thats what happens when jet engines turn jet fuel into noise...ha ha. Not sure how long they would wait for the brakes to cool and if they had an overweight inspection..I do KNOW they had some paperwork...great work Delta.

    Having been aircrew with over 5,000 flying hours and a few emergencies of my own WELL DONE KATL and crew of Delta 95. Great call by the PIC to stay way from the gate with hot brakes and 210,000 LBS of fuel until brakes cooled!

      +Robb Hodges wouldn't the brakes have already cooled in the wheel well at altitude? I really don't understand the emergency.

      +s18thomas If you listen to the audio, the crew DID show high brake temps. Followed the emergency procedures. They never reached "altitude" tho they flew around at 7,000 for a bit dumping fuel but don't believe they were high enough to "cool" the breaks or tires. Could have eventually lead to gear lock-up and a BAD landing.

      +Robb Hodges Thank you for the prompt reply. Much appreciated. Sorry for taking further time, but isn't there a brake hot qrh procedure where the pilot delays retraction of brakes or redeploys the landing gear mid flight to allow cooling by convection?
      I can't seem to download the qrh manual for the b777, but here are two references.

      Also, if I may :
      Why is it a great call by the pilot to stay away from the gate with hot brakes and fuel? If fire was a possibility, then shoudn't an evacuation of the passengers have been ordered? and the brakes can take more than an hour to cool, right?
      I do apologize for the armchair theorising....the pilot did a great job of ensuring passenger safety, of course.

      +s18thomas Not familiar with the B777 technical order and SPECIFIC emergency procedures for hot brakes. Also have to be aware it might be a Hyd leak problem as well. Might wanna look up the report

    Even 2000 lbs overfuel can cause a hard landing. Imagine 210K over would cause a true and extremely HARD landing. A shoutout to the crew for keeping their cool.

      Weight limit is mainly for brakes - brake energy limit. Exceed it and you can end up with anything from blown fuse plugs, tires, fires, or worst case unable to stop. Landings are no different and the heavier you are, the smoother they usually feel.

      Incorrect. The 777 can land at max takeoff weight. It'll weld the gear and melt the fuse plugs but it'll do it, as all Boeings. Certainly no collapsing of any kind. Landing at 300k kg (660k lbs) is more than doable without melting the fuse plugs, under a two-engine return such as this. Nice job by the crew for a good return.

      They're kind of required to do that by the laws of physics. A fully fueled plane is extremely heavy and usually would have used up most of that fuel by the time it reaches its destination. If it has to land again over a certain weight, it can damage the plane and result in a crash and a big fire.

    At 19:30, you can see the separation on the left outboard wheel. (Good job video guy!) Not a major deal, but smart to come on back. The last thing you need to be worrying about on a trans-pac is how your wheels are holding up. Two hour delay for safety's sake - totally worth it. The cost in fuel dump, well, what are you gonna' do. If there had been a real problem, litigation would have cost more. This is the better way to mitigate risk. What's odd is the smoke on takeoff came from the right gear, not the left.

    I was out for a walk near my home the morning this happened. He came directly over us, dumping fuel at 5000 feet. You could smell it. Glad to see this video and learn a little more of what happened nearly six years ago.

    @russian anokin: Fuel vapor in the atmosphere will remain there acting as a greenhouse gas like methane, but jet fuel is just kerosene which has mainly chains of CxH(2x+2) molecules around the C10H22 to C12H26 weight along with aromatics like benzine (C6H6 planar hexagon shaped rings). The fuel over the course of several months will react with O2 in the air catalyzed by UV light to break it down into CO2 and H2O: (1mol)C10H22 + (15 1/2mols)O2 --_UV_-> (10mols)CO2 + (11 mols)H2O. It basically the same as burning it. The UV may also break up the chains into shorter ones. As you can see there is no room for "chem trails", aluminum, or other such nonsense when you know the actual chemistry is.

    I think airliners should have cameras around the plane so pilots can see what's going on and if there's a problem. They should have cameras facing the landing gear, engines, wings, tail, etc.

    Pretty well thought out safety systems. They can tell the temps of the individual wheel brakes. Wish my car had that.

      Yeah they can on Airbus and he can cool off any individual wheel with brake fans if equipped.. which most are (cough, Spirit). Not sure if you can put the fans on without weight on wheels though.. again safety in mind.

    Once the Delta pilot on the ground said he saw smoke that was the end of the flight, even if the pilot in the air had no bad indications the doubt was sown and they couldn't risk going all the way to Tokyo with a problem developing. When ATC keeps asking for the nature of the emergency, I don't think the pilot had a technical reason, they'd just lost confidence in the aircraft.

      Smoke billowing from the undercarriage, 15 + hrs to go in the flight, They had every right to lose confidence in the aircraft. Dump fuel to compensate for the 20 ton ballsacks that the crew had, turn around and head back home!

    Well done Matt. Reading some the childish comments ie: TomCook1993 + AlanScott clearly these basement dwellers have never been either in a car, truck, train or plane in an emergency. When they gain more life experience they'll understand the stresses that are involved and regret their ridiculous comments regarding the actions of this pilot, ATC and ground control.

    Perfect example of how regs can be broken at any point in the situation of an emergency. He needed 260 knots, so that’s exactly what he was going to do to ensure the safety of flight even if regulations require 250 knots and below. Additionally, he only communicated when he needed to, otherwise “standby.” Great job by that pilot

    Glad they turned back and this didn’t end up as a crash on The Flight Channel. How many times some little something pops up on takeoff, but they proceed and end up in a bad spot.

    The captain can't tell the status of the brakes and landing gear. He loaded with fuel and has a full load of passengers. The idiot in the tower keeps asking if that's it. The captain wants trained eyes to tell him there is no problem. He is professional and calm with the situation. He is not taking any chances. Not going to release the fire dept till his maintenance people look it over. Good pilot did the right thing

      There is NO idiot in the tower. The communication with Ground control is normal. I know that it is not the flavor of the month but this is one of the busiest airports in the world. By now there is lots of traffic stacking up or diverting to other destinations, in all sectors. Safety always comes first but you also provide a practical service to the flying public

    Tower: (you need any assistance from us) Yeah we had smoke coming out of the left landing gear, so it would be frickin great if someone would take a look at the plane , you know from outside the plane where you have a really good view of things. YA THINK. No such thing as a stupid question, well maybe just a little...ONE of the first things my flight instructor said was no matter what happens, when your PIC never get rattled and he repeated that , uh I don't know maybe a thousand times throughout his instruction of me learning to fly. You get rattled, freak out, whatever you want to call it, better hope you paiid the premiums on your life insurance if you want your loved ones to be able to collect on it.. This pilot obviously had an instructor that taught the same lesson. Good job sir...

      SMaze17 likewise. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Don't know what pilot relayed to his passengers but I usually can feel if the plane is turning around and only much later does the pilot confirm that there is a problem. I was flying a local 2 hour flight with my adult daughter who despite flying often hates it and that is even having done long hall flights internationally. She knows I am an aviation enthusiast but am usually respectful of her fear but accidently mentioned the plane has turned back. I regretted saying it immediately because she turned snow white and asked me questions I couldn't answer to reassure her. She argued that I am holding back information because "I know so much". I told her I apologise for saying we are turning back even though it's the truth. It is also the truth that I don't know why but reassured her that dispite turning back there was no drastic descent or increase in height. About 30minutes later the pilot confirmed we had turned back but were landing at another airport and not our point of departure. He clearly stated it was because of a dreadful hail storm and flash flood at our destination. He also said he regards the safety of the passengers and the plane as his responsibility. I could hear my daughter's breathing change and see her clenched hands relax.
