sometimes, when I'm really in the zone, I can fully bar an F major on the first fret and all the notes ring out.
And on special occastions, one finger A chord with clean B.
Mike can’t do that. That’s why he covers up with all these embellishments 🤣
@@neiladdison5614 his action very low so he can
You keep doing you; you handsome bastard! Love you.
just use your thump for the low e string and leave the high e string open. Trust me. It sounds even better and is a lot easier to grab ;)
He is the only percussive guitarist that I’ve seen that doesn’t show of with unnecessary hits he is right on the beat his stuff is impossible to play but he doesn’t make it look impossible he just makes it sound good mad respect.
Tastefully done all around...
check out Luca Stricagnoli and Alexandr Misko
Have you seen that new animation when you like a video? Haha for real!
ALSO... Should I do TAB for this cover? Please let me know...
And tutorial pleaseeeeeees
I mean, of course! Take my money please!
Definitely yes!
NO: full TABs and full (!) tutorial of JUMP first, please 😁, cheers, Lars
Tabs with proper instructions, yes please!!!
I saw Michael Hedges at least half a dozen times and with his devastating passing, I wondered if anyone could ever match his style and skill. Enter Mike Dawes. We're blessed to have him!
I've seen Michael Hedges and half dozen times too I saw him open for Crosby stills and Nash in the 89's.... I can count on one hand how many guitar players are as good as Michael was and Mike Dawes here adds a sixth finger
Andy Mckee talks about Hedges and plays his songs all the time
i was at the first hayward/dawes tour in houston. he opened and at the first note i turned to my wife and said "michael hedges". he then proceeded to blow the house away. we all applauded whooped and yelled. he seemed impressed at our reaction. getting his autographed cd at intermission i asked him about hedges, he said "he was my inspiration".
The late great Eric Roche was probably the greatest acoustic player after Michael Hedges. Eric has influenced so many aspiring acoustic players.
Do you know of Andy Mckee? He's the one who introduced me to this style of percussive guitar more than 10 years ago.
Mike Dawes never disappoints.
2:57 THIS and the following strumming is what music is all about. Raw emotions with a deep sense of purpose
You know how in maths, there's a real number between every two real numbers, no matter how close they are? With Mike Dawes, there's a sound between every two sounds, even if laws of physics, geometry or anatomy absolutely prohibit it. And that's just the technique, never mind the musicianship.
Mike singing under his breath is the cutest thing in the world ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The spirit of Michael Hedges showing a new direction lives on. We miss you Michael.
Amen brother !!!Hedges inspired thousands of new Alt tuning players!! Every one of them on Candyrat Records for starters
Amen!
no one can be this perfect...I meant no one should be this perfect....this Dude is unbelievably perfect
First time I saw Michael hedges he led off w this. Mind blowing. Mike Dawes continues to blaze the trail. So good 👍!
It is as much a pleasure to WATCH him play a guitar as it is to HEAR him play a guitar.
Mike Dawes is so incredible, modern day master at the acoustic guitar and love his enthusiasm and unique playing style. Fantastic!
I have no words…. 💯
❤️❤️❤️
Truly a master of his own unique techniques of musical expression. To be commended for his imagination and creativity! 👍
He is pretty good...Ill agree but there are dozens before him that play the same syle! Go to Candyrat Records!! If you want proof
Michael Hedges was playing this style in the 80s. I’m not pissing on anyone’s ability, rather just stating most musicians learn bits and pieces from those that came before and take all of that, add to it and make something simply amazing.
I remember watching Michael Hedges perform this at Red Rocks. He was so into it that he actually broke the strap pin off the guitar at the end.. It was a magical night. Mike Dawes is the heir apparent.
One of the best guests Rick has ever had on. Definitely one of my favorites .
We are so lucky to have Mike and Rick in this time frame . Thankyou boys .
Getting a “WHOOooo” and applause from RB tells you all you need to know…. Hedges would love his playing, and Andy McKee too!
Best version ever...with or without vocals (IMHO). Awesome!
It's even more amazing hearing him play this live.
Yep, I'll second that. I heard it live first actually, the Alton Lounge Bar in April
I love how Mike's expression almost makes the guitar itself sound like a vocalist especially around 3:22. Great work man.
Every time I hear Mike play, he completely surprises me with something outrageous !!! Thank you Rick for having him on !!!
Great memories of Michael Hedges, gone way too soon
Remember watching him when he first came to prominence. True talent. Nice to see him on Rick's channel.
I get emotional watching this not only because the music is beautiful but your skill is just astonishing…. You sir are a true grandmaster!!!
The drop at 1:45 tho.... Shieeeeeeeeesh!
Esmannnnn
Goosebumps. Or "Gåshud" as we say in Sweden. 😁
@@mikedawesofficial i have only just found your channel and im strongly considering take a trip to london this june
His guitar has such a rich, all encompassing sound, makes you feel so good.
Nice playing, good vibes, Spirit of Michael Hedges is above us !
never heard "All along the Watchtower" As mind blowing as that!
Watching this, it occurred to me that Mike Dawes doesn't pre-empt what he is doing as he is playing. He is "FEELING" it, and it is evolving while he plays.
So beautiful. So Michael Hedges. Thanks MD for bringing this back.
That guitar is a part of his body, an extension that only a few are born with!! Out freaking standing!
🤘😝🎸🎶🎶🎶
I hope one day Rick will catch up with the GOAT of this style of guitar - Jon Gomm. He plays with the same level of creativity, virtuosity, and sings beautifully while playing. An insane talent and modest personality.
When I listen to Mike, my ears get to dance with angels, but my very soul is lifted...
I don't know...just trying to find the words...
This improves upon the Michael Hedges version, which I didn’t think could be done! Very well done Mike
Couldn't have said it any better, myself. That's exactly what I was thinking. I clicked on the video when I saw it was MD on RB's channel, since I love 'em both... and hadn't read what the song was. Didn't take long listening to form the suspicion that this was an amazing riff on MD's AATW. But I was riveting watching him for most of the song before I read down to the video's description, and yep... Takes me back 30 years remembering MH but also brings me into deeper appreciation of MD's incredible talent, right here and now. Echoing kahuyna2's comment: we're blessed to have him.
Damn right G
At least Hedges sings it!!! So? I vote hedges
I am often taken aback by how easily they hold a conversation while playing at such a level. Sometimes I can't even breathe properly when playing something complicated.
Lol. Same
That was my initial reaction too! 😂 Baffeling!
love it when an instrumental can bring me to tears enough said
Unbelievable!! So technical but not losing the musicality… played so clean aswell , truly astonishing ❤
I remember when I first stumbled across Mike's music/playing. At the time he wasn't very well known in the states. Most of my guitarist friends weren't familiar with him and when I showed them his video of Impossible, their jaws dropped. Must have been about 10 yrs ago now. Thanks for having him on the show.
If you haven’t already check out Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour, Erik Mongrain
@@FLmetalhead Also check out Richard Smith, Don Alder, Jesse Smith, Helen Avakian, Travis Bowman, the late Pete Huttlinger, Hiroya Tsukamoto, Tomo Shimoda, Adam Gardino, Muriel Anderson, just a few I can think of off of the top of my head.
Jon Gomm, Petteri Sariola, ... well just to make a list here, but I guess William knows them 🙂
Mike Dawes plays incredible. Love it.
Waiting 70+ years to hear you has been worth it. Did it ever occur to you that you would affect so many people in such a beautifully emotional way? Thank you so very much for this gift that you wrapped… “just for me!”
What a great comment. I never comment but that made me smile. Thanks Bud.
Go to Candyrat Records and open up a plethra of musical extasy!!! Start with Calum Graham!!!
How I hope and long for this coming to Spotify! Its a masterpiece of an arrangement, Mike!
the guitarists playing acoustic have come a million miles from what I as a kid heard. Taking the percussive aspects of Adrian Belews style and going so much further!!
The way when Mike plays any song is always legendary ❤️ love u mike
There are a lot good and fine guitar players in this world, but there has to be one of them better than the rest, and you just watched him.
Blew me away (as does everything you play) when I watched this on Ricks channel. I'm glad you have uploaded it too so I can easily share just the song....
No words. Absolute masterpiece. 🔥🔥🔥
The passionate expression of perfectly executed guitar does not get better than this... thank you MD!!!
All along the watchtower BRAVO!!!❤
NEED THIS ON SPOTIFY NOW PLEASE AND THANKS
Michael is looking down with a smile & a tear
A complete new way of approaching guitar playing that comes from the heart/ soul, beautiful, my compliments.
Curious to see/hear Mike's new songs/ work.
Keep up the good work.
So, when I submitted my comment below, for some reason the RUclips algorithm took it to mean that I wanted this video to always appear on the top line of my RUclips front page, or whenever I refreshed the homepage it appears on the top line of videos I may like to listen to.
I may have set some kind of record for the number of times that any one person watched a single video on RUclips, but I can also tell you it very definatly doesn't get boring. What I found was that, the more you listen to it, the greater you appreciate how insanely gifted Mike Dawes is - with all sorts of details and tiny inflections becoming audible and that's despite it being on RUclips and the flying spaghetti monster alone knows how lucky Rick was to be sitting there listening in real time to such an awesome musician.
Wow, that guitar sings pure and true for you. Thank you. Singing in my kitchen now....thank you
Ist s only impossible to feel happines and a deep art of calm when you play 🤩🙏🏼
thanks 🪶
Heard Uncle Rick in the background whispering "This is So Good. Yeah." The man ain't wrong haha!
Mike is PHENOMENAL. MORE!!!
Journey J
Just came back home from an awesome Pat Metheny concert and I can't help thinking that a Mike/Pat duet would be a great experience . . .
Mike is, to say the least, something special.
the Lord has sculpted the perfect guitarist, sound, look, rythym, charisma, and all round nice human being.
I saw Mike in concert with Tommy E the other night. So awesome. I had been dying to see both of them play.
Got to hear this yesterday live when you opened for Periphery. It was a true pleasure!
Absolutely stunning.
I strongly recomment to view the whole interview on Ricks channel! See Mike talk about his stuff is wunderful. The song interpretation is only three cords but with all the truth. Cheers, Lars
Definitely not just three chords.
@@gavinw5469 ...it is a cite from the interview...
his musical abilities is... work - work - work ! So amazing, great inspiration.
holy sheeeet i was just watching your "somebody i used to know" vid and wondered if you played any Hedges and this came up as the next suggestion!
The interview was amazing, you are an absolute incredible talent
It is an absolute joy watch you play........warms the heart of an old guitarist
I could listen to Mike all day. Awesome.
You're killing it Mike Dawes, and I'm elevated from my seat...
Absolutely fantastic
I was allowed to see you in Switzerland and I am totally fascinated. What an incredible experience. Thank you for your art and talent.
never gets old...
Breathtaking how much control Mike has over the guitar. Brilliant
I could watch and listen to this all day long and never get bored.
...I did!
I am sure it must be a maths thing, either that or google/youtube/alfEbet feels the need to prove me wrong.... and sadly they are on a hiding to nothing. For nigh on a month now this video's always on my home page - always in the recomended/you might like these/these are similar videos and we need you to watch this one just once more.
Well I haven't got bored. Mike Dawes is a absolute master of his instrument and every time, just like all great musicianship, I hear that extra little detail or inflection that I didn't note before and which makes what he does and the music that he plays even more outstanding.
Well I am off to bed - got a early day tomorrow, but I will be back just as soon as RUclips shows the video's thumbnail and I will ring up yet another view to keep Rick happy.
@@leqin 😁 absolutelly! I was so lucky to get a few lessons with him, and now I understand the amount of love and details and micro-items he puts into his music is impossible for non-genious people. I love him! Cheers, Lars
You are absolutely amazing. I always think that only being good at an instrument is not enough, you have to also understand the music and arrangement etc. to be able to perform it to the best just like what you did here. Amazing.
many say that an artist like you is one with his instrument, that it is a part of you almost. for me? you cant separate the two. you have a guitar shaped heart. you cannot tell where one starts and the other ends. beyond beauty, beyond the here and now and into soul and beyond.
Mike you are the best! all your stuff is so full of inventiveness and good taste!
Dude's like clockwork truly greatest of our time, him and Emanuel.
I have been actively going back to that entire interview just to rewatch this cover. Love it Mike!!
nothing much better than a guitar with a deep, rich sound properly micced
Dude never stop playing. So good!
Hey Mike, dont know if you’ll see this comment or not but I remember seeing this on Rick’s channel.
Instantly my favorite version of this amazing song.
I feel like a discussion on musical theory between yourself and Guthrie Govan would be a conversation only God could decipher.
Much respect man and God bless.
Mike Blowing !!!
My guitar called from England and said she heard this video and she is leaving me.
I remember a whirling dervish Michael Hedges playing this and spinning faster and faster...joy! Your style is funked up.
Amazing God given talent that only a very select few receive
Waiting for you to put this cover on your Bandcamp, Mike! Thanks for introducing me to Michael Hedges!
Beautiful playing!
Si beautiful. Don't forget about Pete Hutlinger he blew my socks off watching him play solo at a guitar fest with Lawrence Juber headlining. I would love to see both of them on Rick's channel.
Insane! Beautiful! Awesome!
So damn good!!! RIP, MH, gone wayyyyyyyy too soon.
I’m in awe every time I watch you play.
Saw Mike in Durham at a show. Nothing short of incredible
Beautiful!!
Never stop music man.
Fantastic. Pure raw talent. Have to ship him up to northern Canada for a gig
Will always be my favourite musician, always.
