Taurus has been making some form of "model 66" since the late 1970s. I owned one back in the late 80's that went out of time. Of course modern Taurus made things are a far cry from those days.
Most of their '80s and early '90s model 66's were pretty good. The model 85 which is their j-frame clone had a lot of QC problems in the late '80s through mid '90s. Imo I would buy a Taurus 66 off a site like gun broker but not an 85.I'd be willing to buy an 85 for a fairly low cost if I got to inspect it first. It's one of those the good ones are good the bad ones are bad type of things.
They tend to be somewhat spotty in their quality. They can go from superb to being terrible. I guess I lucked out, my 66 is very nice, but the trigger is a lot lighter than this. On single-action it's almost hair trigger, double-action is as smooth as room temperature butter. Accuracy is right there with the best!
FYI: back in the 1970's investment group Bangor Punta owned both S&W and Taurus, Bangor Punta shared "technology" with Taurus AKA Old Machinery from S&W. Thus similarities.
I just got a 4" matt black version. Shot 250 rounds through it tonight. After a quick sight in...my jaw dropped. Perfect farm/winter carry piece. Recoil is comfortable. Get one while you can. Revolvers will be the last ones they take.
If your going to buy a Taurus revolver and looking for a 357 magnum,I highly recommend the model 66 or the model 608 if you have a little extra cash to spend. Both are very very nice revolvers. Two of the best reliable revolvers made from the Taurus production line.
Excellent review and very true. I just got my 66 on Monday, more by accident. I was eyeing a revolver for a longer time. When I saw the 66, I had to ask to handle it. Big mistake, I was hooked instantly lol shot it yesterday and you are so right, recoil with 357 mag is not an issue at all .what a great gun and for my first wheel gun, it couldn't get a better choice S&W fine but I never spend that money.
Revolvers are another form of shooting sticks. Imagine an older person that has difficulties racking a slide...there comes the revolver solving that problem.
I own a Taurus 66 in a 6inch I bought it here in Texas just before the virus for $360 out the door. I have over 200 rounds of 38 & 357 not one problem, in fact it’s so good I got a Taurus 856UL for pocket carry. It’s has 150rounds through it no problems.
I have the exact revolver with the camo laminate grips and a 6" barrel. On the range today, my .357 mag load of a 158 grain Sierra JSP propelled by Enforcer was good for 4" groups at 25 yards. At 50 yards it opened up to about 6" but too high. It is capable of better accuracy than my 74 year olds are capable of, I do not shoot with glasses. I have a 140 Hornady load I need to try. I really like this weapon. The camp grips do not bother my hands with any loading.
The M66 and the 627 are two of the most durable 357 Magnums. As an amateur reloader I put more than one or two over pressure rds down range and the Taurus are each and every one

I actually like most Taurus revolvers over S&w. I’ve owned a lot of good S&w wheel guns, and I had a 686 ssr pro series with a few issues that signaled to me their quality on newer guns took a dump. Front sight came from the factory bent to the left so that had to be replaced, also their new stainless models are total rust magnets for some reason. I cleaned it and kept it oiled and it still had rust issues to where I couldn’t even touch it without having to wipe it down thoroughly. I’ve have a Taurus that was half the price and didn’t rust like that. I can’t explain why it was like that, but $900 dollars spend and it was a total disappointment. Now the gun shot great, but that rust issue turned me off enough that I got rid of it.
I tend to read a lot before buying anything. My knowledge on guns is truly limited. However, I have in the past been a low level employee in a machine shop. Latter I've sold stainless steel products. You seem to be the only one reporting rust issues. Why I do not know. No one states what stainless alloy they use. Some alloys are more rust resistant. The term for all of them is rust resistant-not rust proof. Heat for example can cause stainless steel to rust.
I recently bought the Taurus 608 I'm from the looks of it and they're the same type of revolver just mine holds eight rounds I want those types of wooden grips for Minds where can I buy those
I've been eyeing these for a while for a woods/camping gun. I've seen allot of problems with em. I need to know if my life depended on it, would it work?
No problems with the last two Taurus wheelguns that I've had. Taurus had some problems some time ago, but seems that they've made strides in improving.
Nope. Ive got a 454 raging bull. it suffers from light hammer strikes in DA. There is a witness hole in the side of the frame to ensure the hammer is going to full cock. It isnt. Thats how it left the factory.
I bought one in 16 and two years later when shooting the Corbon 125 grain 357 the cylinder blew up off the gun taking the barrel with it. I was unhurt. Now I carry the Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum loaded with Federal 158 grain HP's. I have a Bersa .380 that works well but I would not tell folks to buy a revolver in the Magnum calibers from Taurus ever.
Did it come with those grips or are they aftermarket? My M66 has the standard black rubber(?) Taurus stuff & I'd like to have something like what you have.
Those grips shipped on it. They're called lamo camo and I'm pretty sure that Hogue made them. 100% sure theyre lamo camo, fact check me on the Hogue part. 😁
So, from about say 2012 to 2016, I considered a couple Taurus revolvers... and the fit, finish, and machining quality just didn't impress me. They were good values, price wise... but have these Taurus revolvers improved? I saw a little 856 and thought the quality looked better than I remember it. Is this something happening across the line... Taurus trying to touch up its quality control and fit and finish? If so, I need another look.
My 66(made in 2018) fit isn't as tight as my uncle's sp101 and the finish is pure workhorse, but it's a couple hundred cheaper and I absolutely love the thing. I've only put 455 rounds of various 38/357 mag factory and hand loads through it, not a single issue and more accurate than me, operation-wise. One day I was bored and decided to get under the sideplate and lightly stoned/polished all parts with any obvious signs of wear, this _really_ smoothed out the trigger and was worth it, glass comes to mind. It's like shooting a gun that's been shot 10,000 times without the actual mileage, but of course this could be done with any gun. The one thing that was giving me grief was the top of the front sight post being so prone to rust if not oiled daily, I suspect something went wrong with the bluing process in that area, this was with an el cheapo universal nylon holster. I had a custom leather IWB holster made for it and my rust issue magically went away. Carrying it EDC for 2 years now, 100% trust it to be there and work when needed.
Yes they've improved since 2018 under new management. They went back to lifetime warrant after 2 years of only 1 year. 2018-2019 was a 1 year warranty.
I've got a seven shot Taurus Tracker in 357 that appears to differ from the M66 in grip, barrel lug profile, and the presence of ports. I've read that the Tracker is more akin to a K-frame, while the M66 is more like the L frame. Have you ever done a side-by-side comparison?
I can tell you the Tracker frame is just a bit smaller than a 686. Taurus calls the Tracker a compact frame and the M66 a medium frame. I don't have a K frame or M66.
I can tell you the 692 is a bit loose in GP100 holster and a bit too tight in K frame holster, I think it's been beefed up a bit over time and is now about an L Frame.
“My trigger scale tops out at 10lbs... single action is 5lbs.” Well, I know where Taurus saved their money in manufacturing. I’m not sure how much money it is for a trigger job from a reputable gunsmith, but that alone might make up the price difference.

@@PatRMG I'll keep that in mind. I've had good luck with them but I've never owned a wheel gun.. thanks!
Nope. Ive got a 454 raging bull. it suffers from light hammer strikes in DA. There is a witness hole in the side of the frame to ensure the hammer is going to full cock. It isnt. Thats how it left the factory.
@@PatRMG Shill spotted.
May have been the ammo, Desert Eagles need 158 gr to cycle the action
I bought one in 16 and two years later when shooting the Corbon 125 grain 357 the cylinder blew up off the gun taking the barrel with it. I was unhurt. Now I carry the Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum loaded with Federal 158 grain HP's. I have a Bersa .380 that works well but I would not tell folks to buy a revolver in the Magnum calibers from Taurus ever.
Ouch. Yeah, a GP100 is built like a tank. Glad you still have your fingers!
Did you buy it used? Sounds to me it wasnt spec'ed for quality control if it was that lame.
@@davidgreve1081 Bought it new. As advertised, the Ruger revolvers are made like tanks and will handle any load.
Model 66 is a boss!!
I'm in the licking river bottoms here in eastern kentucky and humid is a understatement lol
Enjoyed your video and style of doing things! Subscribed!
@@PatRMG You are 100% correct good sir.
Thank you.
Hogue is putting their grips on select Taurus products.
That's a nice looking pistol.
I thought so too.
Where did you get the grips at?
Hogue makes and carries them but they are also the Taurus website
I've got a seven shot Taurus Tracker in 357 that appears to differ from the M66 in grip, barrel lug profile, and the presence of ports. I've read that the Tracker is more akin to a K-frame, while the M66 is more like the L frame. Have you ever done a side-by-side comparison?
I haven't had a Tracker in my hands for review. Might have to look into it for a comparison.
“My trigger scale tops out at 10lbs... single action is 5lbs.”
Well, I know where Taurus saved their money in manufacturing. I’m not sure how much money it is for a trigger job from a reputable gunsmith, but that alone might make up the price difference.
3 years late for party, but i like those shades what are they ?
I was torn between a 3' or a snub 2' stainless .357, but screw it I'm sold on the 4'/7rnd........it looks damn fun to shoot.
