I've recently gone back to some F-Mount lenses, for portraits the 85 1.4G and the 105 1.4 as I prefer the character of the rendering. These are paired with a 50 1.2S which also has a special rendering. That's my personal choice.
BECKYYYYYYYY! 🙂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I'm a giant fan of the 1.8 S, considering all factors (certainly my budget and use case). However I'm hopeful that Nikon will follow through after the 35 1.4 and 50 1.4, and offer an 85 1.4 in the same category.
Thank you for the lovely review, Becky and Kon! On this matter I have to politely disagree with you guys though. I think that it really comes down to subject choice/use case, preference of rendering and practicability. To my eye, the legendary "old" cream machine, the 85 1.4 G is renders beautifully soft wide open, but is also a bit boring, flat and too soft across the frame especially for subjects such as for instance urban photography and land/seascape that may require sharpness and contrast, i.e. it may not be that great for subjects outside soft or romantic portraits or romantic/ soft landscapes. That's why I prefer the 85 1.8 S as it has an outstanding sharpness, pop and contrast in addition to very nice bokeh open, a phenomenal combination the old 85 1.4 just can't match, making the S lens so much more versatile. I don't see it as a cold rendering at all. The 85 1.2 S renders very similarly to the 85 1.8 S (esp. at f1.8 and onwards, ha) with the advantage of having a faster aperture and thus even better bokeh and subject isolation - a perfect choice if it weren't for the big money, weight and size! I have to say though that some of your shots with the 85 1.2S show a strikingly nervous bokeh in the forest background (e.g. with Kon's dog as a subject), leaves and all. I was a bit taken aback to see that, but it shows how important the light, subject and background structure are (incl. distances) to the rendering of any lens. However, IQ wise to me it's 85 1.2S first, no surprise, very closely followed by the 85 1.8S and only then comes the 85 1.4G. In terms of bang for the buck, sheer prowess of performance plus price, size and weight factored in, the 85 1.8S takes the top spot of the three. At a wide aperture it really has a 3D wow factor and its sharpness and colour endition is stunning. For that I love that lens! That being said, keep your reviews and talks going, they are always a joy to watch and very informative!
After renting and now owning the 85 f/1.2 (on top of currently owning the (1.4G and Z 1.8 S), I have the same opinion placement...1st goes the Z 85 1.2, 2nd, the 85 1.4G and 3rd is 85 1.8S. In my opinion, the 1.4G has more character and appeal than the 1.8S; despite the sharp and crisp in focus looks of the 1.8.
You are asking a Parent to Choose Which Child You Love Better. I have both. I am deciding about the Stepkids though. The new Nikkor 35 & 50 f/1.4 which I might draw the line to stop buying and do not need the. Hoarder inside of Me says Ah Why Not? Cheers!
I still have my 1.8G/GTZii on my Zf. I am so torn between getting the 1.8S, 1.2S or wait for the possible Z1.4. I really don't care about having a clinical lens, portable/light lens. I want sharp center with bokkeh on the sides and I'm not a corner to corner IQ snob. Ugg... 😂
He have a problem! At Amazon MX the 85 mm F1.4 the people don't buy it from 2019. I think is an error buy it on 2024, or is not correct?. The purchases should be on 85's Z mount and 85 F1.8 G (for the price) and...chinese!!.Thanks for your attention!. Saludos 🇲🇽
Time is so damaging to digital video. It's like Camembert cheese. If you leave it on your kitchen counter and don't serve it right away, you will regret it. 🙂

I use the old Nikkor 85 mm 1.8f with my new Z8 and it's a fantastic combo!!
Sticking to my 85mm af-s 1.8G after 10 years coupled to my Z6II and now Z6III. Fantastic lens for the price.
I use my Z 85mm f/1.2 S a lot for concerts and events and it’s simply superb.

According to some people, the 85mm f1.2 AF is superior on the Z8, Jared Polin and Matt Granger for example.
Yup
