Super glad to see you jump into this one. It’s pretty much my all time favorite album.
Some context for this one, as promised last time.
Dan Barrett, the lead man behind Deathconsciousness and the rest of Have a Nice Life’s projects, wrote this one in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s. Originally it was supposed to just be a country project but it turned into what you hear it is now. Much like Deathconsciousness, Dan wrote this one while depressed. To my knowledge this one came shortly after his dad passed and after a relationship of his ended. The impetus of the album started after he attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the heart, only stopped by the realization he couldn’t do it and threw the knife into his wall in a burst of emotion.
This album also came with a booklet! It’s much more autobiographical but it does still contain elements of fiction, including an explanation of the album cover. The cover is a picture of Dan wearing what he calls a Voor’s Head Device, which is essentially just a big bag that you put over your head. The breakdown at the end of the Haunting Presence is actually completely real. According to Dan, be put the device on his head and started recording and blacked out. When he woke up, he played the recording back and found what you heard on that opening track.
The album is also named after a real person; Giles Corey of the Salem witch trials. Corey’s wife was accused of being a witch, which he believed initially before defending her. He was later tried for being a witch himself, and when asked what he plead he remained silent. The town, as punishment, decided to put him under a slab and put rocks on top of the slab. They would continuously add stones until eventually they asked him one last time what he plead, to which he simply responded “more weight.” After that, they placed the last rock on him and crushed him to death. Dan saying “there’s a devil on my back, there’s a devil on my legs” etc is him analogizing this to his depression, saying that it’s crushing him and killing him completely.
Not quite as much to unpack contextually like with Deathconsciousness, but it’s a much more intensely personal album I feel. Dan really shed the mysticism and imagery on this one and honestly to its benefit. That said, Giles Corey has a second project! An EP called Hinterkaifeck. It's only 3 songs but all three are on par with everything on this album. Have a Nice Life also has 2 more albums (and it seems Dan and Tim are working on another one according to their Patreon) and Dan himself has a few extra side projects like Black Wing and Nahvalr and lots of lost media albums/EPs like Gate and In Pieces. Lots and lots of good stuff. Recommend checking out HANL's Unnatural World in particular, as well as the Giles Corey EP.
Also, you should check out the live version of No One is Ever Going to Want Me. It's fucking nuts.
As for recommendations, going to go with some less personal ones and suggest you hit up some more of the internet darling classics!
The Glow Pt. 2 - The Microphones (I see someone mentioned A Crow Looked at Me, wouldn't recommend listening to that one before this, same artist!)
    Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
    Souvlaki - Slowdive
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me - Brand New
    Hospice - The Antlers
Songs About Leaving - Carissa's Wierd
Turn On the Bright Lights - Interpol
Twin Fantasy (2018) - Car Seat Headrest
    Grace - Jeff Buckley
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
    Long Season - Fishmans
    every Elliott Smith album
pretty much all of Radiohead’s discography, recommend starting with The Bends

You forgot the “other” album… deconstructionist. Which Dan barrett looked into what happened on “the haunting presence” and decided to try and create some of his own “trance” music. it’s definitely an experience is all I’m gonna say.

This is such a dark, bleak album, with an unnervingly comforting element sprinkled into it symbolizing that yearn for release, for an imagined end. I hope Dan's doing alright these days, and I hope that if or when he plays these songs live, they feel like covers, because I don't want him dipping into this headspace again, for his own sake.

every time i listen to this it makes me grateful dan barrett is doing much better because it really does sound like it comes from someone at the absolute lowest pit of life. especially on songs like blackest bile and i'm going to do it, which are probably my two favorite on the album. your reaction to i'm going to do it really showed how fucking ruinous that one is
glad you enjoyed the album like you did with deathcon! it's not at all similar sonically or sound wise, but if you want more music that really gets at that intense pit of despair then i'd heavily recommend nine inch nails' music. broken, the downward spiral, and the fragile are all three of my favorite music projects ever

In some instances I prefer this album over deathconciousness, both extremely hard listens though lol. I heavily recommend “grouper / Inca ore” by grouper and Inca ore, just like Giles Corey and deathconsciousness it’s a hard a listen but it’s one of those albums that give you a VERY unique experience that I’ve yet to have with any other album

I see the sentiment in the comments being echoed but you should totally give The Unnatural World by Have A Nice Life a listen, I know you already have The Glow Pt. 2 on your list so I'll spare that suggestion. If you like The Glow Pt. 2, Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me is super soul crushing.
