- With the 1966 release of In My Life by Judy Collins, containing Leonard Cohens Suzanne and Dress Rehearsal Rag, Cohen became a folk rock icon of the singer songwriter movement. Already an acclaimed poet and novelist in his native Canada, Cohen moved to New York in 1967 and released his classic album Songs of Leonard Cohen on Columbia Records. Its music launched Leonard Cohen into the highest and most influential echelon of songwriters. Cohens elegiac work is widely used in film and covered by artists from Jeff Buckley to Bono to Bob Dylan to R.E.M. As Kurt Cobain said, Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld so I can sigh eternally.

Cohen measurably and single-handedly raised the collective worth of humanity.
Brilliant! Thank you for that!
Well said
Well said ! I totally agree.
A good man Leonard was in my opinion.
And at the same time he destroyed the lives of those closest to him. Much love for the vastness beyond good and evil, that was and is Leonard Cohen. Much love from a special place that is Montreal.
That is so true and a beautiful tribute to him.
A poet always answers a personal tribute with a POEM!!! He's now a THOUSAND floors above us in that Tower....
Only Leonard Cohen could recite the lyrics of one of his songs ( Tower of Song ) and make it seem like a speech . Brilliant .
there are no dirty words .. ever. i love that man.
I will never forget the first time I heard Leonard Cohen, it was at a punk show (Retox) in Downtown Houston & in between the bands set, right before Retox got on, I hear over the speakers Spanish guitar chords & a man saying “& Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water...” & then another song played “He was just some Joseph looking for a manger...”
Those lyrics stuck in my head for the rest of the night. I told my friends “do you hear this?” They didn’t answer me because they were hypnotized, mesmerized by his calm voice & prophetic lyrics. I thought it was Bob Dylan at first, it wasn’t until I looked up his lyrics when I realized that it was Leonard Cohen.
I can’t remember the first time I heard Bob Dylan, but I will always remember the night my life changed forever, the night I heard Leonard Cohen. Since then I learned how to play all the songs from Cohens first 3 albums. I owe a lot of my guitar playing to Leonard Cohen, he taught me how to play the right way. Rest in Heaven, Mr. Cohen & thank you for the beautiful music & poems you gave to this world.
Nice!!! I have my own Leonard Cohen story. Only a handful have of artists have affected me the way Mr. Cohen does.
very well written comment, i think Leonard would like this.
I have watched all inductions. This is the most solemn..why? All those musicians themselves are listening to the Master with respect and awe
I HAVE MET THE MAN OF ALL ASPECTS OF MY LIFE & I AM NO LONGER SEARCHING! I AM MADLY IN LOVE!!!
Indeed!
You can’t help but love Leonard. I have so much more to learn about him and listen to and read his words. His life was so rich and interesting. His words take me places I never knew existed in my mind.💕
Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen are giants. I would have loved to see them work on a project together.
This man tamed a wild audience on the Isle of Wight back in the day. The crowd was getting ugly and he charmed them all. Many of the crowd weren't there to see The Who, they were there for Leonard. He was a gentleman and a poet of great repute. RIP to the greatest songwriter of all time.
That has to be THE GREATEST acceptance speech of all TIME!!! A true poet!

I agreed.

Thank you Leonard. They will play your songs forever.
Leonard Cohen is a true Artist in every sense of the word..Not only is he a gracious man but very wise and humble as well.
And funny!
I only saw him live once, but it was the greatest show I've seen, bar none... and I've seen a lot of shows. Leonard Cohen was a graceful performer... full of grace, full of charm... even the way that he moved onstage was so expressive. It was the kind of performance that left you feeling like you'd just eaten the most wonderful dessert, totally delicious, totally fat free, lingering on the tongue for days. Like something impossible.
Leonard Cohen, you brought beauty to the world. Thank you, and we all will miss you terribly.
I told you why he was by a window in his last album. Because he is now speaking to us sweetly from the Tower of Song. 💕⚘
Yep, cigarette in hand.
Damn I miss him.
I think Leonard was one of the greatest ever male lyricists to have ever lived.A true genius I think.
The world is missing you friend.
Thank you Leonard Cohen for being such an important part to the soundtrack of my life for nearly 5 decades. It might be Closing Time, but your body of work still lives on. Peace.
R.I P ..you will be with us forever in your Tower of Song
100% class, and an artist in the truest sense of the word until the very end. RIP, Leonard.
We had the privilege and very good fortune to see and hear Leonard Cohen twice during his last few years touring, both times at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He was absolutely amazing, performing at that time in his mid 70s, for some 3 1/2 hours with barely a 15 minute intermission. In that 18,000 seat venue, on both occasions, you could hear a pin drop throughout his performance, that is how completely he drew in and totally captivated his audiences. It was, on both occasions for us, a very moving experience. Thank you, Leonard, a life very well lived.
The lyric dissolves into the music.......
Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for the memories Leonard much loved
I have been listening to his magnificent songs since 1969 & I wonder why people in Europe had more admiration & respect for him than in North America particularly in the USA. Many of his albums hit top 10 in a number of countries in Europe but never here.
I think he will reach his immortality now that he is gone. After all we the human race always respect people when they are gone from us. RIP Leonard & thank you for all those lovely songs. I will cherish them forever.
Rest in Peace Leonard, Lou and Jeff...... thanks for the music
Demion supported Leonard in Dublin, thank God I was there, on a warm summer night when all we felt was the music, we saw the music and worshipped the composer. Thanks Leonard
How sad ... or perhaps ironic? That I find this Leonard Cohen tribute on the day that he leaves this earth. You are missed already Leonard .. you will be missed and loved forever. RIP xoxo
Catherine Hamel he was already gone. He passed away on the 7th.
This I know and knew at the time that I wrote the comment, Terry Bee. I even said 'RIP' in the message.
dylanesque22000 answered such because the press release was days after his death...on the tenth. Relax, listen to some LC. Love and Peace.
LC. The man was a gifted musician, poet, wordsmith. Charming, eloquent, demure. RIP, sir.
Yes.❤️🌹🎵
This is one of my all time favourite Hall of Fame inductions speeches. What a classy, charming man, and such beautiful words. RIP sir, and say hello to Lou xx
Lou Reed, You are so missed...
Leonard, you too.
Aahh, Leonard Cohen, thank you for the revival of my own personal musical journey...thank you for the most joyous years of my life when I discovered your poetry and your music, and filled many of my happiest and saddest hours in your company...Hallelujah and safe journey...Elaine A. Small
Prophetic. The final album was dropped in fall 2019. 3 years after Cohen's death. Rice was one of several artists to help Leonard's son Adam finish the bare vocal tracks leftover from You Want It Darker.
We just love Leonard are glad that we live in the same time and got to see him in person.
I saw him in 2011.
In the Tower of Song the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is somewhere in the basement.
Great man, im humbled by him, and i dont say that about many people.
One of the best speeches ever
Coolest award acceptance speech ever. He's still speaking to me sweetly from his window.
Only Leonard Cohen could captivate the R&R Hall of Fame audience with his poetry and get such respect from his peers.
God damm, why am I weeping? Oh it's the lyrics...I almost forgot. I love this man.
I love him.
Five years ago I discovered, and I never got to see him in concert which I would have went to see all the time but I just love him and his music that is poetry I'm sorry I was so late
How can you not appreciate this man, and all he has said and done,
and now he looks down on us, from a window he rightfully won...
his humility, his presence are in the right places they belong...
now in our hearts, his contribution, to the tower of song!
Well done and well deserved. (yes I am seeing this for the first time).
Such an elegant man.
What a beautiful talented man!
A legend inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame by another legend!! Man, I love rock and roll!! R.I.P. Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen!! Miss you and your music!!😢💔
RIP my hero and friend, the finest human being to touch my life. Please watch these remarkable interviews over the years in the CBC archives. They are a priceless record of who he was and of his personal evolution. www.cbc.ca/archives/topic/leonard-cohen-canadas-melancholy-bard
THE Poet has left the room.
E fino all'ultimo ha continuato a ESSERE. A vivere, scrivere, amare, cantare. Io questo lo trovo bellissimo, mi sembra un dono ma anche un esempio da seguire, per quanto possibile.
Wonderful!!! One of my favorites along with Bob Dylan!
From one great rock poet to another one-of-a-kind poet
We are blessed that we lived in an age when a great poet, by some miracle of inspiration, decided to sing his poetry for us all. And he did that in the most beautiful possible manner.
One of THE best things on RUclips.
Rest in Peace Lou Reed Rest in Peace Leonard Cohen
Pure elegance.
My favourite poet of all times!!!
in awe of his talent
He isn't a singer at all, but he has a voice of gold. His songs are very simple, but they fit his words to perfection. And his words are immaculate.
Peter Kroll, Singapore
Leonard certainly WAS a 'singer' and a magnificent one as well!!
a master of his craft. in every sense.
Tribute on my Hitz Show, unfortunately nothing will do you justice Leonard.
I'm so glad to see that Damian Rice was asked to perform that song. Like Leonard, I have grown weary of all those covers of Hallelujah but this one is well done and understated.
Damian has his own iconic tune: The Blowers Daughter. Both of these two tunes have served as earworms in my head on occasion. what a thing!
A man ahead of his time.
Leonard was timeless.
An inspirational & true legend!
Man, he rocks.
Leonard - your love and life live on forever through the voices of your songs...
Cada vez que te veo sonreír, que son pocas, mi espíritu se ensancha, se eleva, se transforma en un Aleluya, que no me canso de repetir.
Brilliant . . perfect acceptance . .
Very well done In Memoriam Tribute video ! Nice job ! Let's hope for all of us we will have a better year in 2017 ! Thank god this one is almost finally over ....
As we can still hear you, from your Tower of Song. Thank you.
Well done Mr. Cohen your music will live on forever. Thank you.
Amen❤️🌹🎵
How can the world keep spinning?
If someone who was there
told me about an induction
they had been invited to
had started with just one
one the inductees lines
before they told me who
it was I would have said
L. Cohen.
Well deserved award.
Mr Cohen rules.
Leonard,
I miss you.
Rob
"He could stopped there, he just gets better"
Lou describing an average Leonard Cohen song, the master of song.
THANK U LEONARD FOR LEAVING YOUR GOLDEN VOICE FOR US NOW I CAN WATCH YOU WHENEVER I WANT ,RIP LEONARD TRUE LEGEND, FOREVER IN MY HEART,LOVE JACQUI XXXXX
- standin' by the window - where the light is s t r o n g
The master!
Love this man, best singer ever R.I.P
His words has the mixture of wit and sarcasms.. A great master of words
How many artists today would quote their own songs lyrics to an audience at their own hall of fame induction speech without even a hint of arrogance about it. Leonard Cohen was unique to say the least.
4:48 He was talking about his music (his fingers), not what most people were thinking. Bless you Cohen.
Wheres jeff buckley when we need him. RIP leonard cohen and Jeff buckley
RIP the great Leonard Cohen
wow he read the PERFECT line from his work. Half perfect because it's so much less known but the lyrics in that song are his top 5 greatest. Plus it's one of his few songs/along with Partisan that isn't about the same thing (the dirtiness of the human condition) over and over and over and over - never offering any solution or hope or as he put it "SOMETHING TO FIGHT FOR, NOT THE RIGHT TO DISAGREE (which is a poetic way of saying 'uncertainty/doubt'.... his works biggest flaw - just very excellent poetry about doubt and corruption
Classy speech from a classy guy.
RIP Leonard
Bob Dylan should be the one inducting Leonard Cohen and I will prefer performance by Nick Cave at the end, with all due respect Damian Rice
minds would've been blown had it gone down that way. But Lou Reed, and Damian Rice ain't too shabby either
Lou Reed and Cohen's friendship goes back to very old days. Lou was right choice even i want to see Dylan.
You don’t know the connection between Leonard and damion
Dylan doesn't hold a candle to Cohen. Not as a poet, not as a singer, and especially not as a person.
04:35 john says "i didn't said". :) so it was cohen's humor. loved it.
thank you Leonard !
The coolest guy EVER!
Anyone else notice that John Mellencamp didn't applaud when Leonard took the stage?
Billy Joel too. Maybe he isn't their cuppa tea
> 2021 < "But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song" 💗
Leonard Cohen, you were and will remain the most comprehensive meaning of poetry, songwriting, singing, and spirituality to me and many others ! We will always remember and live with your priceless gifts to us ! RIP Maestro !

@ 4:36 John and Julie Fogerty with Leonard Cohen. Wonderful!
i saw him in "the concerthall in vienna", which is the konzerthaus. it was like god sang for us. i had tears in my eyes
Wish I could have known him.❤
Just as he promised, he's still "speaking to us sweetly from his window in the Tower of Song."
He spoke the TRUTH and no one listens;
Judgement is coming and, even though everything went wrong, Mr. Cohen can only say Halleluya!
They are taking us to the Tower down the track???
Thank you for softly giving us truth and love from yout Heart of Gold.
I noticed the ignorance of Cougar-Mellancamp not applauding while Cohen was introduced. Little note to you Johnny. You could not tune Cohen's guitar. Your little ditties were amusing and fun in a populist way. But you ain't in Cohen's league....not even close.
enRuTuu 60 John Mellancamp is just a poor man’s Neil Young. Nothing more, nothing less.
@@guitarmatricide4834 He's not that good :) More like a poor man's poor man.
Just wish people would stop covering Hallelujah. There are very few covers that do it justice. I live in Montreal and we have two huge murals of Leonard. Every time I walk by I'm reminded of his genius.
Mark Ronson is the doppelgänger of Leonard in his younger years - very evocative - strange genetic creative traits
LOVE THAT VOICE
