I went to concert by leonard Cohen in brighton UK in 1979 at the dome. A baby was crying so loud it was affecting the performance. Leonard stoppef playing and said in a slow low voice i love to hear a baby cry we thundered with applause. I am now 67 and have never forgotten that magic night RIP.....leonard
I played classical/flamenco for 40 years, I memorized a hundred wonderful pieces but I was nothing & had no talent. BUT listening to Mr. Cohen speak of the guitar brought all of my failures into a light of great success as I listened and knew, in the depth of my soul, just exactly what he meant & felt. He made my 40 years of struggle into a moment of incredible joy. I weep at his passing as I write this.
Yes, he brought deeply and beautifully crafted words and music into my life a long, long time ago. I shall not forget them, and I cannot forget them. I have played and sung for almost sixty years now, and Leonard Cohen has been, and continues to be a deep, yearning emotion in all I write, and all I aspire to be.
I just can't fathom how great an orator he is. My God the man knew words...and how to use them to go straight to one's soul. What a gift to mankind Cohen was.
Please let me share this with you. Our girl who is now a young woman wrote a letter to the late great Leonard Cohen. We were so lucky to see him in Australia and so so lucky to find a security guard who actually gave Mr. Cohen our girls letter while he was on stage. She was 4 at the time and just fell in love with the song “Everybody Knows “. Her letter told to Mr. Cohen went: (written by her Dad as she spoke out loud): I am only 4...I have a drawn a flower garden for you. I hope you like it. I maybe your youngest fan but will be here tonight. “ On the night of that concert he read it on stage. It was the most beautiful thing. Tears of joy needless to say. Thank you Mr. Leonard Cohen for your music...your poetry and your genuine humanity. Love you forever. Love the memory you left with us. Forever grateful for such a gentleman. Cheers
Definition of a poet. Perhaps an idea and notes the night before, but no one coukd ad lib what that concept means better than Leonard. I agree with the comment acceptance speech into art - in a few words the poet has conveyed a lifetime of passions. That strength and Mr Cohen's presence is eternal. RIP, thanks for your continued example of a good life. As you said, "not a victory march" but so much more powerful.
"Never lament casually. If one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, it must be done within the strict confines of dignity and beauty."
Amazing is the word to use, such depth of feeling. He was able to feel the sound before said the words, such commands can not be stopped. Thank you Leonard Cohen, for all your words and music.
So many artists take their own life. Not feeling appreciated enough to thrive, but only to survive. Sensitive souls not really equipped to face the suffering of life. And yet what they give, gives life to others. RIP.
I also tear up every single time I listen to this speech. Specially being myself from Andalusia, the region of Spain Lorca was from and that is well known as the birthplace of flamenco, and being a Cohen's fan, this speech is just priceless. What a poet, what an artist. A Spanish flamenco singer, Enrique Morente, covered Cohen's Take This Waltz, which was based on a poem by Federico García Lorca, the poet he talks about in this speech. Later there have been more covers of this song. You can find them on RUclips. It is a beautiful story of mutual inspiration (Lorca-Cohen-Morente... others).
The man took his life without revealing anything about himself, and then I cried about someone I never knew, even Mr Cohen's gone now, but I know how he got his Spanish style guitar inspiration.
I miss him, and after watching and hearing this I miss him all the more. He understood the human condition, and he understood it as all do who understand the human condition, through his own personal experience and especially through his own suffering.
He's truly one of a kind. He has an old world grace, charm and intellect, but still remains hip. His songs will live forever. I met him once after a concert in Vancouver; he gave a red rose to my wife and all of the women who had attended.
I love two particular quotes from his songs. One was “I have studied the religions of this world....but cheerfulness kept breaking through” and the other one was “There is a crack, a crack in everything....that’s how the light gets in”. Every line of most his songs causes me to stop and meditate on his wisdom. His London concert was the best ever...the musicians were perfectly in sync with him, as was his choir. I loved the beginning of his concert when he addressed the audience thanking them for coming, saying “Most of you will have suffered geographical and financial inconvenience”.
And perhaps the inspiration for that crack of light was born here in this interview 55:50 ruclips.net/video/VIR5ps8usuo/видео.html Klaus Lynggaard a danish author may though have read som of Cohens earlier work and perhaps are referring to it!
And there is... a crack in Everything.. that’s how the Light gets in. Watched a special called I’m your Man. The two ladies paid tribute to this song like no one else could have.
I first heard of Leonard Cohen when I went down to work in Butlins holiday camp in Skegness in England. A beautifull young English girl told me I had to listen to Susanne. And then I heard it. And after I had the honour of seeing him in Greens Playhouse in Glasgow. And I've loved him since then and I still love him to this very day.
Butlins Skegness? That brings back childhood memories. Good old Skeggy. Suzanne was the first song I heard of Leonard Cohen’s, even as a child I knew he was a unique artist. RIP LC
there is no doubt that we have witnessed one of the world's greatest poet/singers speaking from the heart and taking us all beyond the limits of sincerity.. we are seeing a wonderful oration spoken with such truth and eloquence it brings tears to the eyes.. like Leonard i too wonder who the young Spaniard was.. but all we can do is to thank him for place the maestro's hands on those wonderful chords and for keeping them there for so long...a joy to the world
Yes his speech was deeply moving to me also. It has left me wondering about the mysterious young man who gave him so much inspiration, who was he? why was he so sad?
By 8:00 I began crying because I knew that this speech was about gratitude. One of the sweetest geniuses of our era. And he once described how he labored over every single word, sometimes spending a week or more to get just one line of lyrics exactly ....perfect. And boy did he ever! I flunked my first semester of college in 1967 because I just drove to the school parking lot every day, parked my VW camper, took out my 12-string, sat in the back, and played Suzanne all day long, with a little bit of Simon and Garfunkel mixed in. I was mesmerized by Leonard Cohen's haunting music and lyrics and Physics 101 just didn't stand a chance. And besides...it was the Summer of Love...
I completely agree with you. It is the best show of gratitude I never ever heard. I love this man. What a great artist, poet and better person. I miss him so much. This is a real poet.
As a spainyard i can only say thanks leonard, for this sincere, touching and even dramatic speech. And thankyou, for showing us what you're made off, hence what we are too.
"Poetry comes from a place that no one commands and no one conquers." Yes, he really speaks like this. Watch "Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Leonard Cohen", done long before he was known as a singer. Truly one of a kind.
"You have allowed me to fix my signature to the bottom of your page". Humbleness and gratitude has never been expressed in such modesty and greatness. What an example of what it is to be a man! I wish to follow as best as I can although my faults is the biggest hindrance to do so.
It is a trip that you said this. Let me explain.. A song came back into my mind (for whatever reason) today. I thought about it and was kind of pissed that I couldnt remember where I heard it. But for some reason It came to me in my head the name Cohen. I wasnt sure if this was right or not. Well,, I started thinking a little more and then BAMM. I recalled a song from a movie that I liked (had no idea who this was at the time) and Googled it. All I had was a guess at a name. Tried it and POW there it was. Just wanted to let you know that. And somehow we all "remember" names. As I will yours. Much love and respect to ya.
What a sad story about a man who gave up hope yet he made a difference in Leonard Cohens life.... never give up on yourself... that young guitarist could have been a great inspiration to more people in life , keep believing in life
Alexei Romanov Fuck Royalty. What have they achieved except of wearing fancy uniforms and dresses? They all should bow in awe before this human being that has given so much to this world.

What a great speech ! I hope Leonard Cohen will meet this young men from Spain who committed the suicide... Rest in peace the best poet among singers and best singer among poets....
Thank you for posting this speech. Just like that man from Spain had opened up a new dimension in music for Leonard Cohen.... he has opened up new dimensions in music, poetry, beauty and love for me... and many, many others. So here I am with tears of gratitude in my eyes. RIP Mr. Cohen... you are the Tower of Song.
Indeed, truly an evolved soul, one of the world's greatest poets/songwriters. Leonard Cohen knows how, with humble graciousness and tender truth, to caress the soul of an entire nation. How could Spaniards not feel deeply loved and affirmed with his grateful tribute? Leonard Cohen is "rightly" a citizen of the world, & I must say how proud I feel that he's also a "Canadian citizen." Part of my own Canadian identity comes from this man and his greatness. Thank you, DrHGuy, for posting this video.
What an amazing speech and to give thanks to the all the men who had inspired him to write and to the guitar that gave sound to his words. How humbling to acknowledge them. My the Lord bless Leonard’s soul and to the men who had inspired him and to nature. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ, amen.
Rest in peace, sir. I hope you feel safe and content on the softest bed of silk, up in the stars, way past Saturns rings, and through the dragon mist... Sending you all my love.
Leonard Cohen a poet and a real mensch in the truest sense of the word. Always Spanish poetry writing and culture is soulful. I am proud that Leonard is a Canadian, such a real person, an inspiration to us all.
His humbleness and always his deep emotional sincerity speak about the kind of master Leonard Cohen is. Thanks so much to you ALWAYS Mister LEONARD COHEN. A grateful Spanish woman in Spain.
Ohmygosh, what a beautiful speech. It sure explains so much about his music catalogue. I hope they're up there playing guitar together again. RIP to them both.
You guitar player if you sit on a cloud above, now you know that you inspired this man and learned him to play those six chords. And hope you know by this speech, this story, that you Life was Worth a lot. Worth to inspire other to create. And we who love this man will Always remember you too. Hallelujah!
I'm in tears, the Soul that this great Man had was something so deep we would be fortunate in understanding just a minute of it. I miss you, we all do, you gave so much to Europe, Spanish people love you, appreciate you, it's in your songs, poetry, friends you made, Leonard oh how you are still very much Loved, missed, I hope wherever you are you are happy! We lack something great in our World here, it's YOU! 💔💖💔🎼🙏🎼🎸🎸🎸🥃
"If one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, then it must be done within the strict confines of dignity and beauty". Mission accomplished Leonard.
You honoured us with your words. As a Spaniard I can't help feeling a touch sentimental about all this.Mr Cohen, it was meant for you to meet him...We can consider him a gift from heaven...just like yourself and your poetry...cause you've been a true poet as well as a wonderful musician. This is your legacy.I'd like to thank you for all you've done for the music.
I fell in love and was completely in awe of this man and his music the first time I seen him live. I went to 2 of his performances in, I think 1973. He was hypnotic, no one has ever come close. I have listened to him throughout my life and still do. His music has helped and given me hope through some of my hardest times, I will always be indebted to him ❤

Cohen giving a master class on public speaking whilst walking the thin line between humble man and living legend. Brilliance.

Such a sweet memory. I'm glad your family has it.
I didn't see any notes. No teleprompter. Just a man talking from the heart. And what a heart....
Bob Sullivan
He said at the beginning of his speech Bob that he’d written it down but didn’t need to look. It was from the heart, beautiful.
Bob Sullivan- You put this in words very well.
Spoken with dignity and beauty.

Unreal. A man with a special kind of integrity. He gives himself very little credit for what he could do with those six chords!
A superlative orator you just want to keep listening to. Deep poetic and moving just like his beautiful albums. Always an inspiration and sadly missed
Truly a man who had done his spiritual homework.
leonard cohen, poet laureate of the world

classic Leonard Cohen. even in an acceptance speech he is able to move the air around him and summon the elements.
He truly knew the duende.
Very well put
Beautiful.
You way you said THAT was poetic !
Yeah man really 😢
I wish I were half as articulate as this man. It is evident that his audience is almost in a trance, such is (was) his prescence, delivery and grace.

The last genius gentleman and indeed a gentle genius.
Note that not like some Cohen would never call himself a genius. He however was true to himself
He was a genius. He was a gentleman. But to label him "the last" invokes a combination of despair and generational hubris that I do not think he would have agreed with.
Even when he talks he sings
probably because we got used to that when he sings, he just talks. haha. that's not at all bad though.

A wonderful speech, straight from the heart, and what a Heart.
If it be your will
that I sing no more
and my voice be still
as it was before.....
Sleep well, Mr. Cohen.
Thank you.

His music has helped and given me hope through some of my hardest times, I will always be indebted to him ❤
When Cohen passed I slowly realised that an epoch i of my life was over!
Yes - the coolest , wisest and most inspiring man I ever known!
he is always present.
Humility, oh how we need you now, and how a legend shows us how
Leonard magic
mesmerizingly deep, the potency of his words echo loudly a message of his life with sincerity
