Isn't that like half of indie horror games recently? MatPat himself has done numerous theories on games revolving around being in a simulation or trapped in a game. It's just another check on the horror genre that the ads where feeding off of.
As another one who has never seen an Evertale ad but has actually played the game. It has an interesting story. I think these ads and the offline story are connected because in the final chapter of the game, there are dialogues like this: "Eternal - I am the embodiment of fear. , Hope and fear... Intertwined, they create a boundless universe" etc. However, I do agree that those ads are false advertising.
I felt like there was somewhat of a link too, perhaps the ads being the lore behind the creation of the world known as Evertale. Besides that if they either promoted their game accurately or made the horror game they've shown in their ads it would be absolutely amazing.
Who are we kidding the game is nothing like the ads. It never becomes a dark Pokelike game. Breeders don"t exist. After the first story àrc capturing monsters goes away às they àre acquired through RNG summons. The story is à boring text heavy snoozfest where there are dozens of screens of dialogue, most of which don't advance the story.
@@gregl2455there is now a side story about war and the only 1 person survived from basic game and she only survived because she betrayed all other characters, it is pretty good.
I think it may be one of those cases where the company hired a totally diffferent team that knew very little of the game's development to make the ads and they ended up making their own thing with what they had about the actual game.
Ikr. I still haven’t checked out the game, so I can’t speak on its quality, but part of the reason WHY I didn’t check it out is because the vibe I got from the ads was that it wanted to make a whole game out of “disturbing secret lore” like you see in Undertale and DDLC, and forgot that the audience is supposed to have to FIND those secrets and work for them.
@@Excelsior1937 Exactly! Plus they go for the “cool indie horro pixel whatever” style, but mess it up TERRIBLY! Some pixels are bigger then others, or move like it wouldnt actually if it was really made with pixels!
I've tried it before, way before I knew these ads existed and its basically a pretty meh RPG style game with gacha mechanics. The only thing I'd applaud is that its interactive I guess, you travel a pretty large interconnected world.
Just started playing several days ago because I randomly found it from playstore when I was browsing for games. So I don't know about their ads. Quite enjoyable ngl. The only mobile game ads that I keep seeing everywhere is Echocalypse and Girls Connect (and a few Genshin here and there). So much that I get tired of it lol. And while we are talking about ads, MOST of mobile games ads out there somehow works like that. Those ads show random stuff that's not in the game at all. I always wonder why those game companies let this stupidly made ads go.
@@LordCantalo to be fair some of the Evertale ads I’ve seen use Pokémon assets so at least they aren’t stealing assets from other companies for those ads (also I have actually also played the game offline story’s generic but still decent)
2:00 Fun Fact: Beasts of Burden was actually made to create a creepy Pokémon game like the Evertale ads. So without these ads we wouldn’t have gotten Beasts of Burden.
I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but when MattPatt begins talking about Sato and shows Kazuto (Grey breeder) being hit by the car the monster following Kazuto actually backed up before Kazuto was hit. Could've been part of the simulation, but it still seems pretty strange to me.
I still find it funny that MatPat and the crew explained the thirst trap monster lover commercials. This is a weird case of a company accidentally making a plot by doing things meant to fraudulently draw customers in: creating consistant characters, hot (monster) girls, pokemon asthetic, horror themes, and some fetishes (impregnation, monster girls, etc).
I always enjoyed getting the evertale ads because they have that horrific and mysterious allure, but I’ve got such a deep mistrust for mobile games I never looked into it. Glad you made this video to bring awareness to both the amazing ads and the awful game
If you want some real games like it, just play some games like The Witch's House, Blank Dream, The Crooked Man, Yume Nikki, Ao Oni, and Ib (I highly recommend The Witch's House the most ❤)
I got a mobile game ad and it took elden ring footage ( just the player walking around In different areas) and tried to pass it off as areas within the mobile game
As I was watching this I got an evertale ad and it was completely different than the horror like ones. The video only came out 27 minutes ago. Goes to show how once someone gets exposed they try to cover it up as fast as possible
So, as soon Matpat said "That's just a theory", my computer monitor's HDMI cable got loose so my monitor went black, but I could still hear the glitchy audio at the end. It was very creepy until I realized what had happened.
I remember my PC freezing when I was playing a game, it glitched my screen to the blue screen of dead. And then this horrific sound of static endures as the screen distorted. Now that freaked me out.
Literally only just came across the Evertale ads and I googled it to see if it was fake advertising. Glad ol' Mattpat did me the service of explaining the stuff that was tickling my interest!
I wouldn't be surprised if the client or the marketing team had a checklist of 'pasta fodder, all the ads were written by a single person, and that person had way more passion than pay grade. That would explain both the formulaic elements and the shocking amount of thought put into this cohesive-looking setting. If so, I'm rooting for that person to go solo or find a better employer soon so they can do the quality, untainted art that they are destined to!
I actually saw one of these ads before, I was so invested in the story. It was the right amount of horror. But I never download mobile apps because it's not my thing, so I'm glad you covered the ads lore!
I love how AS SOON as this video got posted, evertale changed its ad style to better reflect what game it is. Uh oh, looks like someone doesn't wanna get sued! 😳
Somebody there likely realized that by charging $0.99 (1:40) to get the game they opened the door to the FTC and other governmental agencies to come down on them like a ton of bricks. I might add that is, considering how credit cards work, is really dumb as so much is eaten up by fee they likely see next to none of that money.
@Hoodie Pen, not even a game. It could be a movie or a tv miniseries. Sure, game is best for the revenge part, but the movie and TV series get to the best part: adapting and maintaining its lore!
I genuinely want to. I’m making a game company and am working on making games and I am obsessed with this idea. I just am scared of the legalities of the whole thing. maybe if I were to make enough money and buy the idea off evertale lol… but thats a farfetched dream that’d require a gofundme or something 😭
It's a real shame these ads show a game that doesn't exist, because I'd totally play it, and it would be cool if someone DID make this game or something like it. And that's what makes me sad, it's like a more elaborate version of Petscop, another game that doesn't exactly exist either, but with a more sinister reason for existing rather than being an actual artistic project. Until then, we're just stuck with what Game Freak and The Pokemon Company put out each year, who will never touch upon these kind of subjects due to the franchise being aimed primarily at kids.
@@Kazulir Oh ok thank you! I was imagining MatPat's face on a mic or something! Also I was thinking that the editors just distorted the sound for emphasis, but it didn't occur to me that MatPat himself might've almost swallowed his irl mic out of pure frustration lol
Omori is just a story about a boy having severe depression and trauma after having killed his sister accidentally and now living in denial incapable of accepting what he had done, he created a fantasy world to escape realty where all the monsters he face are just his trauma reappearing. The game seems complex but after watching the totality of the story it is quite easy to understand
i dont think omori really needs any theories.. most of the questions are answered by the end. the only question i really ever had was what happens after each ending, and theories of that would just be pure speculation
It's very important to remember to not hate the creative team behind these. I've met someone who's aware of the backend and most of the assets for these were made with the knowledge or belief they'd be used in an actual game.
Me and a guy named AudioDread actually took the Evertale ads as inspiration for a real Pokemon-themed horror game a year or so back. Called it "Beasts of Burden". Didn't do too well, but was tons of fun to make, nonetheless. Edit: Omg he actually mentioned it?! My hands are literally shaking. This is awesome. Me and AudioDread actually first met up and started working on the game because of the Game Theory Subreddit. He made a post about Evertale, and asked if the ads were just fake. When it turned out they were, we set out on making the game. It's so cool to see it come full circle. Thank you so much for supporting indie devs, MatPat!
I had no idea that there were over 300 ads, even still I remember after seeing 4-5 of them thinking that I'd love to play the game being advertised. It was also a shame cause I knew that the actual game was nothing like that
Old comment, yes, but if I had to guess, this is mankind's experimentation before the incident. It's advertised as fun, interesting, and " ooo what would you get?? ", blind to both the fact that it's genetic experimentation, and also what would happen.
In the actual game, there are types of characters called “endless *insert name here*” which are reborn and evil counter parts of the original character, ‘maybe tieing to the fact that death is so prominent in these ads, and as youve stated before, trainers are now turning into monsters. Many if the “human” sprites in these ads are real characters in the plot of the game who carry out nearly identical goals and stuff. Like for example you mentioned the girl with a knife in the grocery store, this is a character nearly identical called “Astria” or smth cant remember its been a while. You mentioned how character “blue” was inlove with “pink” these simulate the two main characters “finn” and “rizzete” which are in love with each other! A character called “norza jn the actual playthrouh of the game is a one of the main villains, but upon defeat, is reborn as a new character, playjng an important role in future acts as a protagonist companion helping and guiding the main character with no apparent memory of his past life. This game hasnt actually ended. the plot is still being added by the way. Ive only played until 2020, there may have been more plot tying to the ads. Oh yeah and also one of the biggest boss fights is with a character merging with another boss. Do what u will with that info
Maybe its not just an ad but an actual story cutscene that's happening in game. Since this type of game can't add a cutscene on game, maybe they decided it to put into the ads itself
well mys', according to ur words... *the ad's made when the company's funded, but at the development, they're out of funds.* *AND THEY MADE THIS HORRIBLE DISAPPOINTING TRASH*
@@lolliii5477 I didn't meant its because of the funding but more like they can't implement the that kind of creative cutscene because of the game engine their using. It looks like the game is similar to pokemon. I'm not really sure since I didn't play it.
My guess was that the world in the evertale ads is the world in the machine. In the game, it’s the earth that they are fighting to return to. Maybe blue and pink recognized each other after they escaped the machine and fell in love again. It’s hard to say, given how vastly different the ads and the game tend to be, but that’s a also a plausible theory

Thanks MatPat, I was about to download it and decided to look and see if it actually was gonna scratch the itch. They should totally make it accurate to the ads, the way they present everything on both ends so far seems like it could legitimately work. I'll check out Beasts Of Burden instead for now!
@matpat Look at the character Ossia, specifically her bio. I played on release and got her as a SSR unit, her bio talks about her first steps in a laboratory and developing powers that "might spell doom for us all", all in the form of lab notes. They even call her "Specimen O55-1A". You might have just solved the Lore for the actual game O.0
I can’t believe that the Game/Film/Food Theory network always makes these tremendous cinematic cold open intros. They are always amazing and seemingly get better every video.
I've been hoping for a video on this game for quite a while now and I'm glad it finally happened. The game's ads captured my interest ages ago, from the very first one I was extremely curious, but never actually downloaded the game, for obvious reasons. I kept seeing these ads, and had no idea what any of it was about, but I really wanted to know. I requested a theory on it in the comments a few times. Edit: I was just rewatching this video and I literally got one of these ads as a midroll.
Bro same. I've seen to many fake ads to trust ads at this point, so I was just waiting to see if anyone actually talked about it so I could figure out if I should play it
The closest one I know is a rom hack called pokemon snake wood It's difficult and dark but it's fun and it's about the closest thing I know to the game in the videos
If you ask me, Evertale isn’t just bad to deceiving customers about its game, but it’s also an overall insult to its predecessor as Evertale is actually a successor to Dragon Island Blue which came out in the early 2010s. It was also a monster catcher game, but incredibly thought out with towns and specific spots you could find strong creatures in the game without needing to give into micro transactions unlike Evertale which definitely leads into that.
As someone who actually played the game but never watched a single ad for it, this feels like they were advertising a completely different game than the one I know 😆 Like the marketing team got the wrong design documents to work from, without ever seeing the actual game they were making ads for. At least that's my explanation.
Having previously worked for the company behind Evertale (though not on Evertale's dev team) it's not surprising how heavy of an inspiration Pokémon was. From my experience, a lot of artists I met who were recruited to work for the company were originally either fakemon artists or fangame designers. Pokémon fangames tend to often be pretty edgy as well, so taking that into account and their niche for making monster collector games, it's understandable what their result was. The horror addition is a cool touch, it's nice changing things up now and then. Rambling aside, very cool video as always!
I played Evertale because I heard it was a successor to Dragon Island Blue and can I just say, I’m sad that this is what became of it. Dragon Island Blue was clearly a love letter to RPGs on a mobile device and was not deceptive about what it was, as it actually said it was LIKE Pokémon but not that it was unlike these ads. Not to mention dragon island blue had such a unique artstyle and characters.
I feel you honestly, When I played this game around 2018 or 19 I was honestly interested in the story because of how much lore was put into these characters and side stories but now I feel like it's lost its touch with what it used to be back then.
@@romaniangypsy3640 yeah, I hate when game companies just decide to mislead consumers advertising something that was nothing to do with the real product

I also saw an ad for this game and was really interested in playing it cause of the horror aspect, but when I saw the reviews from players who’ve played the game as well as screenshots of what the game is like i quickly changed my mind on downloading it.
It feels like instead of advertising, they basically sponsored a team to make their own horror stuff
No, this isn't one of those cases. This method of blatant false advertising is done deliberately.
If they cared they would have looked through the ads and stopped them, this is on purpose

it's.... very late 2000s jump scare levels of "shock value"
I've always considered Evertale as a game trying to act like a scary game but trying so hard that it stops being scary and feels over deliberate
Also im pretty sure the reason for the human-monsters are just for bait, werent they all girls too? Idk it seems common in some adds now.

I mean, most stories of 'science gone too far' start with science that's still reasonable, sane or at least beneficial.
*the ad's made when the company's funded, but at the development, they're out of funds.*
*AND THEY MADE THIS HORRIBLE DISAPPOINTING TRASH*
@@lolliii5477 I didn't meant its because of the funding but more like they can't implement the that kind of creative cutscene because of the game engine their using. It looks like the game is similar to pokemon. I'm not really sure since I didn't play it.
Add on Norza remember his pass in chapter 5 act 1 it i remember correctly? but choose to step forward
Over a year later and 3:03 is still one the funniest game theory clips to me

11:50 I saw Connor and literally screamed of joy.. I’ve always wanted to see a DBH theory but to see his cameo just made my day
Omg that would be amazing!! 🔵
I kept seeing the tied up monster ad and got curious about this game. Thanks GT for giving me a heads up on this game.
the snake girl?
I've been imagining what the game would be like if it were actually like the ads, I'd like to see someone actually make a game like this.
I thought someone would recommend a game like that and by god these bots are annoying
Bruh 4 bots in a row, humanity is often disappointing
*YOOOOOO* 🔥

The closest one I know is a rom hack called pokemon snake wood
It's difficult and dark but it's fun and it's about the closest thing I know to the game in the videos
@@AsmodaiStorm oh God, snakewood.
So glad you covered this game, I feel like it tricked everyone at some point 💀
I literally thought it was only a pokemon rip-off lol
I am so sorry for the number of bots here
There is like 9 bot here 🤦♂️
If you ask me, Evertale isn’t just bad to deceiving customers about its game, but it’s also an overall insult to its predecessor as Evertale is actually a successor to Dragon Island Blue which came out in the early 2010s. It was also a monster catcher game, but incredibly thought out with towns and specific spots you could find strong creatures in the game without needing to give into micro transactions unlike Evertale which definitely leads into that.
I never got one
It is an HONOR to be mentioned in the same video as Omori!
Did you make the Pokémon horror game?
@@madisonlecong6083 No, Cooking Companions 😂
I’m so sad they never finished it on this channel, easily would be one of their best live playthroughs …
yayy cooking companions devs are fellow omori fans! how fun, both games are great!
Man I love your game, it was great to see you here and being an Omori fan aswell!

As someone who played this game before the ads, I've always been FURIOUS that I can't play the nonsense in their ads 😭
Let's be honest we waited so long for this:

The bots have invaded-
I played Evertale because I heard it was a successor to Dragon Island Blue and can I just say, I’m sad that this is what became of it.

Can wait to be traumatized by a new horror game (ads?) theory! Honestly, it's my favorite content here lol
Not even a horror game lmao
I doubt it lol
@@romaniangypsy3640 yep, just realized that lol. But the game theory does have some horror elements, so win win I guess?
@@ItsJustValHere i wish the game existed tho
@@romaniangypsy3640 yeah, I hate when game companies just decide to mislead consumers advertising something that was nothing to do with the real product
I downloaded the game because of an ad, I could tell the ad was deceptive from the first glance at the game but still, the game seemed actually nice and lo and behold it was. Games are made by developers not by the marketing team.
4:40 As someone who creates characters as a hobby, you'd be surprised how much thought and detail goes into throwaway concepts
Report all of this shity replies
I also saw an ad for this game and was really interested in playing it cause of the horror aspect, but when I saw the reviews from players who’ve played the game as well as screenshots of what the game is like i quickly changed my mind on downloading it. Appreciate you Mat & the team for the video; very entertaining theories xD

I love that I got an add for Evertale while watching this video, I hardly get their adds
I love the idea that the evertale ads actually have a story rather than just being a strange compilation of anything creepy they can come up with. Also wild that the game on Google play has sample photos that are also creepy, non-existent gameplay.
