  • Cube Controls has been considered one of the more high end brands when it comes to Sim Racing hardware for quite some time now. We've been lucky enough to review quite a number of their wheels over the years including the GT-Pro and Formula Pro Wireless, the CSX3 with integrated dash and the F-PRO and while all of them have been great, the price point has placed them out of the question for the majority of sim racers.
    So we were very excited when they reached out and asked if we would like to review the new F-CORE wheel. As the name suggests, this wheel takes what Cube Controls have identified as the core essential features from their more expensive wheels, and makes them available in a more affordable 290mm diameter formula style wheel.
    So Let's check it out!

    Definitely a hole in the market in this segment. It’s starting to feel like wheels are costing more than they should. $1.5k wheels just keep getting released and if you want a half decent 3rd party formula style wheel you need to spend big.

    • @Xzibitfreek
      @Xzibitfreek Год назад +7

      A big reason for a price like 1,5k is the display which they often charge an extra 400-500€ for. Thankfully years ago I bought a DIY display to mount on my wheelbase for like 90€ and came to the conclusion that i dont need it cuz i never looked at it once. And thats why I would never buy a wheel with a display. All the information is already in the game, what would i need a display for besides immersion but 400-500€ for a bit more immersion? nah.

    • @rover1374
      @rover1374 Год назад +3

      @@Xzibitfreek I’ve never used a display, but if I had one I’d doubt id use it. Even without a display wheels are being released for quite high prices like the F-pro, Grid MPX, VRS etc.

    Problem with wheels designed this way is imo:
    If you like formula/open wheelers, then you want to have a display. With a display wheel you can race GT cars, LM cars, Indycars aswell. And one won't have thoughts like "LEDs, colour graded information on tyre temp etc would really be cool" no more.
    About this review: Is immho an absolute top job from you. Without beeing rude you clearly named the cons by their names. Totally fair, and totally honest. If there is more good it's always easy/easier to address it. We have so much new simracing products that it is more important than ever to point to the unpleasant differences. I can clearly feel that you also heading towards this direction. Thanks for that. I watched the review knowing the wheel is nothing for me. It's absolutely worth watching. Total respect

    Hey Will, I got this wheel last week and have been racing with it since then. While the grips are more tacky than the pro, I don't find that they collect a lot of dust or skin on them. They are pretty much clean after leaving it for a week in the rig. Also I appreciate that the grips are softer than the f pro, it feels nicer on bare hands in my opinion. I had an ascher wheel before with also soft grips that collected a lot of dust, this one actually didn't for me so far. Maybe that changes in the future with more use. Just wanted to throw that out in case other people wanted to hear a different opinion.

Not fussed about the less buttons on the X-29 but could you comment on the button feel of a GSI wheel compared with the F-Core? I'm also thinking the grips on the X-29 look like they might be better and the paddle shifters should be better.

    Great review again. Now, i've no technical knowledge whatsoever and i'm wondering: Could you do a review on how to connect a compatable wheel to a diffrent wheelbase. I think a lot of people have a Fanatec wheelbase for example and really like this wheel. I'm still a bit in the dark about how to connect this compatibable wheel to my DD2. What kind of hub do i need, where can i get them (Fanatec or Cube Control) and how do i connect them/set them up without braking stuff (yes i'm a moron). Would be nice to see a whole range of different compatable wheels and a range of different wheelbases for comparison. What do peeple need, what to take in on account. i had some real quality problems with my F pro, the plastic surrounds for the buttons was loose in a couple of spots, would easily come away from the body with a brush of the thumb, one of the worst aspects of cube wheels for me... even contacted cube controls about it having only had it a few weeks and they wouldn't replace it they just said send it in and they would super glue it down lol no thanks cube controls, ill pass, luckily the shop i purchased it from agreed to exchange it and footed the bill to send it back to cube controls for their refurbishment process (apparently costly)... probably will skip cube controls moving forward aslong as they use that solution for the button surrounds. Currently using the Asetek forte wheel and honestly i think its just made better, the cube controls materials are higher end but the construction of the Asetek is smarter, everything feels more as one, no plastic you can move around its just all integrated so well making the wheel feel one piece. Pains me to say it because the cube wheels are so damn sexy but i think they really do stumble with the construction... in my experience ofcourse, had the same issues with the old formula pro and the F pro.

      I have the F64 V3 and it's a fantastic wheel. Also about double this price. I think Boosted Media reviewed one of the earlier revs (V2). It hasn't changed much other than the added 2 thumb encoders on the bottom half. I find them easy to flick with my thumb or ring finger. The two middle encoders can be cw/ccw pulse or position switches which account for the 24/64 inputs (somewhere around there). Shifters and clutches on the back are also excellent, but quite loud.
      I think Ascher Racing also plans to release some more wheels but no eta as of now. Probably will be expensive...

    • @ohngo181
      @ohngo181 Год назад +1

      My current wheel is the Sim Racing Bay button box with a sparco r330 rim and the shifters I would consider loud so it's not something I have an issue with since I'm in an isolated room. My thing is trying to minimize the amount of apps I need to run on my PC for sim racing. The Ascher has my attention because it communicates through the Simucube True Drive app and that is a positive for me. I do appreciate your experience with the wheel.

    When I looked for a wheel for a potential VRS wheelbase and I didnt want to spend more than 700€, especially for a dual clutch wheel, there barely was any choice. well, i mean, this wheel does cost 760€ in Germany rn but there are very few wheels on the market in that price segment. Most notably Polsimer and Simline. Want Dual Clutch in an Ascher wheel? 1100€. Want Dual Clutch in a GSI wheel? That would be 1160€. Cube Controls? That would be 1030€ (before this wheel), VRS wheel, 997€, GRID MPX 1180.
    Even the new "more affordable" GSI X-29 will cost more than 900€ in the dual clutch version, so this wheel definitely sits in a league of its own.

    Forgive me for this somewhat silly question, but could this be used on a Thrustmaster Base that allows for wheel interchanging ? I am assuming that as it is USB/bluetooth then all that is needed is a suitable adaptor !, It is a great looking wheel that offers far more options than Thrustmasters current range of Ecosystem wheels, so would be a great upgrade for those wheelbases

    • @J03130

      @@J03130 there are compatable QR's for thrustmaster which would allow such a wheel to be mounted ( check out Peter makes things on youtube) so that wouldn't be an issue I don't think. so may I adjust my question with the Caviate of " with a suitable QR" could you mount this wheel to a TM Base ?

    • @samuelye2860
      @samuelye2860 Год назад

      @nemesismcc I would assume thrustmaster requires an electrical connection into the wheelbase itself for FFB to work. If that's the case, I would avoid this wheel as you would need to DIY the connection.
      Besides, people buy thrustmaster usually for the price or ecosystem. It wouldn't make sense to buy this wheel before upgrading your wheelbase.

    • @nemesismcc
      @nemesismcc Год назад

      @@samuelye2860 The Thrustmaster wheel base is connected via USB to the PC, the connections within the wheel are for the buttons etc on said wheels and LED's if fitted, so the base would read the FFB from the PC, so that wouldn't be an issue. As for budget that is down to the individual, if they want to spend 600 or so on a wheel thats is for them to make that choice, but some of Thrustmasters Ecosystem wheels are pretty high up in the price range, but with less features than this particular wheel. The F1000 is over £350 and as I said has less features.

    • @samuelye2860
      @samuelye2860 Год назад

      @nemesismcc I'm quite sure the sf1000 wheel has more features, not less. Not to mention, it's cheaper.
      If the wheelbase works without a thrustmaster wheel connected, then it would be fine. Companies like fanatec lock the wheelbase if there isn't a wheel connected to the wheel base.
      Just test it in-game without a wheel rim connected to your wheelbase. If FFB still works, then you have your answer.

      Fwiw, I own a set of simagic P2000's and love them (Interested to know what happened between Simagic and Will). Better than my old Fanatec V3, Cheaper than Heusinkvelds, and works pretty much out of the box. I like the pedal plates, the adjustability, and how it looks and feels. I got all the extras, like heel plate and extended throttle pedal, which I think improves the experience even more. Plenty of reviews out there, with little negatives reported, which is why I chose it as my upgrade

      I purchased a Simagic Alpha base and GT4-C wheel a few months ago from gamergeardirect and now they no longer sell Simagic. In fact, they now have a page on their site suggesting what the ‘better’ options are. Something is up with that too.

    Consumerism is so rife with this hobby its laughable. I'm familiar with other "computer gadget" hobbies like mechanical keyboards and high end AV gear, and while it can be hard to understand why those people spend hundreds-up to thousands on something as basic as a mechanical keyboard or pair of headphones, they are likely to actually use that equipment multiple times a week, possibly daily.
    People will happily spend thousands on sim racing gear, and then maybe use their rig maybe once a week.
    I have a couple of mates that have 80/20 rigs and simucubes, fancy DD rigs and even VR. They play iRacing maybe once a fortnight or week.
    While I'm here with a cockpit frame I built myself out of timber with a 5 yro Thrustmaster wheel and pedals. It's been busy at work recently but I try to play a few times a week and get on the GT world series cup or LFM lobbies on the weekends.
    Needless to say it's not hard to guess who is actually faster and racing or when we go to the rental karts irl...

      Not necessarily, I know a lot of people hop on the sim every night.

      @@KayJblue 100% this. Let people do what they want with their money. If someone wants to blow $5k for a rig and race once in a while, cool. As long as you have fun.

    • @Xzibitfreek
      @Xzibitfreek Год назад +3

      Buying high end hardware isnt about becoming a faster driver and climbing the ranks. You buy high end hardware for a more enjoyable experience and better immersion. If your lap times improve with that, thats just an added bonus.
      Funny you mention GT cars because GT3 is a class developed with a high priority on being as easy to drive as possible because its a class with a lot of amateur drivers who arent necessarily the most skilled drivers but simply have a lot of money and just want to race for fun. in case you havent noticed it, those kind of drivers are MOST drivers in motorsports. People who drive for the sake of driving and the enjoyment that comes with it, not winning. Winning is just a bonus.
      Those few thousands for a high end simrig are peanuts compared to somebody spending millions to drive a GT3 season in whatever championship.
      You sound like youre just jealous of your mates having high end setups while you dont.
      Most people dont approach simracing with the mindset that they want to be the best driver in the world, they approach simracing with the intent to have an enjoyable racing experience. If I wanted as much iRating as I could possibly have, I would have to do things that simply wouldnt be any fun, such as spamming a car/track combination and exclusively driving one class to perfect my skills in that class. But that is not fun for me, I like to swap cars frequently, last sunday I drive the Toyota GR86 on the Nordschleife for 4 hours with a friend and it was an absolute blast. The following weekend im feeling like driving a GTE on Spa. Is it good for my iRating? no. Am I having a blast? Absolutely and thats what its all about.
