Chan Santa Cruz, which this quiz labeled "maya cruzob", was a Mayan separatist faction, that fought an independence war called the "Caste War of Yucatán" against mexico between 1847-1915.
The quiz creator fixed this where Chan Santa Cruz is the main answer, but he allows some alternatives that I suggested in the comments of the quiz.
It was good to see he was responsive and it isn't surprising that he didn't know much about some of the places on this quiz. I certainly didn't. I only learned of Chan Santa Cruz within the last month while I was reading about the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
Cabo Verde was always called Cabo Verde. It is only recently that it was accepted internationally. Means green cape.
Kiautschou Bay, today's Qingdao, is home to the Tsingtao brewery, the second biggest brewery in China and the most sold chinese beer in the US. The brewery was founded in 1903 by German settlers...who else 😅
On the Phillipines, they declared independence and rebelled against Spain in 1898 with the aid of the Americans then invovled in the Spanish-American War. However the Americans betrayed their Fillipino allies and staged a fake battle with Spain to take Manilla and then in the Treaty of Paris signed in late 1898 the Americans bought the Phillipines from Spain.
The large scale war for independence continued until the US won it in 1902. There was a major insurgency, especially among the Moro people, until 1913, when the conflict was greatly reduced and the US declared victory. The Moro insurgency that had existed from when the Spanish arrived still exists today against the central government.
So what was its status in 1900? It was recognized as a American colony, but there was a Fillipino government fighting for independence.
Just wanted to say that if you ever revisit this quiz, the author has added a lot more in regards to Russia, specifically some internal autonomous territories and split up both Finland and the other special territories of Russia into their respective governorates.
Great video! wanted to say that you got me into doing these types of quizzes and expanding my knowledge. Just this past week I was able to finish the original name all the countries quiz in the 20 minutes! Never thought I would know every country in the world (at least by sporcle standards) Hooked on trying so many of these now, so thank you for being awesome and doing these!
I know the feeling. Now you gotta learn all the capitals of the world, and then all the flags...
@@Muzprom lol working on those flags!
Well done! Once you learn all the countries there are so many fun quizzes to play! Glad I could inspire!
If anyone wants to know how to make a quiz like this, basically just make a map quiz, make a table in excel, take a clipping of it and group that to the map you want to include, use a converter to convert it to JPG, use an image resizer to resize it to 920 pixels wide, upload to Imgur and via ‘images’ copy the direct link and paste into sporcle
very interesting quiz and awesome video!
Iran was the Iranian term for Iran and long has been. Persia was derived from the Greek term for Iran and refers to one specific group of Iranian peoples (those of modern Fars). Both were used somewhat interchangeably in English in the early 1900s, although Persia would have been more common.
The Iranian government asked for "Iran" to be used in the 1930s then in the late 1950s officially recognized both English terms. Finally, after the Islamic Revolution they again made Iran the official English name.
Currently there is a significant part of the Iranian diaspora who strongly oppose the use of "Iran" as they associate it with the Islamic Republic.
Thanks for elaborating on that. The Iran and Philippines situations were far more complicated than I could fit into the annotations!
Kingdom of Imerina is (part of) Madagascar, if I'm not mistaken.
Great video, my tiniest contribution: You said you didnt know where the south sandwich islands were, they are the tiny little dot as you head east away from the falklands.
But they weren't listed as the weren't claimed by any nation until 1908 when the British claimed them
I got 148/234 very much skewed towards the better known countries and only 16 in the third collumn
Tianjin was the port of Beijing and a center of the Boxer Rebellion.
And is still like the 5th biggest Chinese cities
Great Video Man
Go on, have yourself S Tomé. Once I was looking at old flags and saw a flag for the “Kingdom of Portugal, Madeira and the Algarves”
I think I deserve it!
Labuan is a federal territory of Malaysia today, off the coast of Borneo. Came up in a pub quiz once, pretty sure I was the only one who knew it existed. Thanks Geoguessr :D
*UPDATE*: The creator updated the quiz so "Chan Santa Cruz" is the main answer, not Maya Cruzob.
*Maya Cruzob* was a de facto state of indigenous people in the current Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the east part of the Yucatán.
Currently, I don't think the quiz accepts any alternatives, but "Chan Santa Cruz" and the "Mayan State of Chan Santa Cruz" should work. I would want "Cruzob" by itself and "Cruzob Maya" both to count. I added a comment to the quiz asking him to add those.
They lost their independence in the Caste War of Yucatán, which formally ended in 1915, during the Mexican Revolution.
Great information - thank you!
Lol , saw your video and thought someone was using my face for their videos 😅 brother?
Hard quiz, but still got 193 (183 if you don't count the ones i just misspelt)
That's an amazing score!
