the metric system was introduced in revolutionary france. they even had a calender with 10 months, weeks that had 10 days and days that had 10 hours for a while.

young bulgarians do absolutely still do the headshake for yes, but they have different headshakes for yes and no. this actually caused a few situations with my bulgarian wife, being asked something and the response being missunderstood. she usually does it the western way when interacting with westerners, but there was this situation where she was just eating breakfast at my mothers place and was asked whether she'd want some milk, and as she was kind of sleepy and reading something in the newspaper, she didn't think much and just shook the head. then she was surprised she didn't get any milk

I don't like the fact about San Marino has very little to do with the country.

Definitely. Famously the British agreed to trade rubber to Germany for Zeiss optical glass in 1915. However whether the deal went through is not entirely clear.

arguably, the current german language (Hochdeutsch) originated in switzerland. the "hoch" (high) in the name refers to it being from the mountainous south of the german speaking world. up north, people spoke Niederdeutsch (nether german or lower german). so, most of the cities that speak that language are in fact outside of the country.
but I assume whoever made that map didnt know that

18:52 I'm surprised there are people who still think Russia invented Cyrillic alphabet

the cyrillic alphabet was invented by the brothers Cyril and Method from greece. but they invented it for the Bulgarian language (the bulgarian tsar paid them to do so). it then spread to other slavic languages.

Cyrillic is very much a modified form of the Greek alphabet so it makes sense that the person who developed it came from Greece.

I just have a question, how come you never said "Adolf Hitler" when reading the fact for austria? Does it have to do with youtube's restriction?

The name of the country is similar to the name of a player of some unfathomable American sport. That is no clue at all.

Yep, the Russia fact is about Leo Tolstoy, although there is a debate on "pestering wife" part, nowadays many consider Tolstoy himself might've actually been quite a tyrant and abuser

Well done. The metric system you should have nailed instantly though (thinking Uk about that was kind of funny). What a strange information about Sweden since both Finland and Norway was bragging info I conclude that the authors had some connection to those countries.

Top-3 of most brutalised countries in WW2: Belarus, Poland, Ukraine. All three lost >16% of population each. Germany doesn't even comes close, especially since its losses are predominantly of military origin.

I imagine how boring it would have been if instead of clicking on the map you would’ve needed to write the country name 🥱
