AI is designed to fight pontiff (because he is a summon for him), and is buffed from being the SoC phantom. So I’m not surprised _that_ much. I was expecting it to be at least close like Anri, because Anri has the same reasons as Pale Shade to be good at pontiff, but I guess Pale Shade’s buff was that much stronger.

I like how at first I was just watching this and wishing NPCs weren't so blind to opponents 10 meters away...and then, around 5:10, I sat up and begun to really pay attention after Sirris started faring far better than expected. Anri's near-win did not surprise me as much as it did others, since I remember how tanky s/he was in the tournament and that Horace and them can defeat Aldrich, and I also recalled Phantom Orbeck defences from the time he fought Kriemhild. It was really nice to receive additional confirmation that late-game Londor Pale Shade >>>> Yuria, though. In all, this is definitely a good way to demonstrate which characters are strong enough to warrant a full video of them taking on the bosses, and which are not! I presume we'll be getting a Part 2 with the remaining NPCs as well? (besides the handful of those who have already gone through the full boss sequences, obviously.) EDIT: Just realized that other notable combatants can also be tested vs. Pontiff in the same manner. I.e. it would be interesting to see how all the Knights would fare.

If only Siegward remembered, that he has a shield and used it, he could actually won. He is tanky and has high damage. But of course, he uses it as decoration, it seems... Sirris was suprising, I thought she will get rekt because of her pathetic damage. But she is actually quite tough, and healing miracles helped her a lot. In the end however, that abysmal damage with her sword doomed her. Well well, seems like someone here actually knows how to use shield! Anri is suprisingly strong. If her damage was as good as her great defense she would win for sure. But in the end she was still tanking too much hits, while lacking in offense. Cornyx got rekt. Not big suprise, although it is shame, he seemed to have quite good damage against Pontiff, he was just too fragile and can't dodge. Orbeck survived for longer than I thought. I was sure his magic won't do much to Sulyvahn and dagger will be dogshit, but it wasn't bad.
To think Orbeck did better then everyone except Anri and Pale Shade... and even then, it was still pretty close. I guess I also shouldn’t underestimate Pale Shade anymore...

I think he was also supposed to be where Champion Gundyr is instead of the cathedral. Not that I didn't have trouble with the previous bosses, but Pontiff was the first one to give me enough trouble that I had to stop for a day before returning and beating him. Pontiff tends to be the boss that makes players really pay attention if they weren't already from the Abyss Watchers.
in my honest opinion, if Sulyvahn weren't overly vulnerable in the moments he transforms and creates his clone, he would be the third strongest boss in the game (excluding DLC)
To me, he is already the best (personal opinion), but when we talk about a boss FIGHT, Gael is way better (although i hate him so much as a character).

Wolnir isn't that strong, but he also doesn't count since his gimmick is "hit the glowing weak spots". I went into that fight without a full health bar (fall damage from the jump down from the ledge) and without all my estus uses and still beat him without taking any additional damage or anything.
I can't help but feel a lot of these point-blank blindspots in Sulyvahn's attacks are wholly unintentional, especially considering his giant fiery/magical auras on each swing. Pale Shade was undeniably saved by this, but to his credit, that random dude can hit hard compared to the rest. Yuria and Anri undoubtedly put on the greatest shows though. I wonder what these fights would look like in the elevated area where the carpets meet?
His diagonal swings with the profaned greatsword are likely to miss if your at point blank range and in front of him, usually that doesn't hit you, it's the added jab from the greatsword of judgement right after that that'll catch you off guard, then he follows with another profaned diagonal swing which can actually catch you.
I was expecting a video in the style of « to how many NPCs can Pontiff successively survive (ie : how many NPCs does it take to kill pontiff if they enter one by one and he doesn’t get to regen) », but that’s good too, and given the honestly impressive performance of the last NPCs, I think it’s for the best too ^^
It's good for showing us which NPCs are strong enough to try going through all bosses, and which are clearly not. It would be funny to eventually see, say, all the game's Knights tested in the same manner as well!
Unfortunately you can only summon her for late game, or early areas. Even though she is still pretty durable there, the npc phantom scaling makes her seem weak.

Anri, Gotthard, and Londor Pale Shade are the only AI designed to fight Pontiff (as they are summons for the fight) but their AI isn’t designed solely for one boss, they are designed to fight every boss they’re a summon for. Their AI only changes when they are an invader/hostile NPC or a neutral NPC (Not applicable for all NPCs, eg Tsorig’s AI is the same for all 3 variants) Basically NPCs have 2 AIs, fighting the player, and fighting for the player. So they will not predict attack well from enemies they weren’t intended to fight.
Wait, wait, wait....the Shade actually BEAT Pontiff?! I paid little attention to his fight since it look like he was about to get slaughtered early on. Shock the hell out of me when I looked back down at my phone to see Pontiff death animation...
A bit surprising that some of the more aggressive NPCs, like the Sword Master, didn't run at Pontiff right away. I'm impressed with how well Sirris did and Orbeck with whatever that mist he used was at the end of his fight. Aw, Yuria was doing really well until phase 2 when she got more defensive. Anri's parry is a thing of beauty considering I never managed to parry Pontiff. I tried, screwed it up, and then just didn't bother trying again. What worked in the end was staying very aggressive, better timing my dodges, and using the Hollowslayer Greatsword's weapon art more. Anri's fight looks the closest to how a player would handle this fight. I think if they were a player they might have thrown their controller or done a lot of swearing (or both). I know this is with NPCs and all, but it does show to me that DS3 is more punishing of defensive play rather than encouraging it. It's easy to see what cues they took from Bloodborne with adjusting enemy speeds, aggressiveness, and combat in general. Defensive play works fine with Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1, but those games have slower enemies on the whole (except the damn dogs/wolves). I haven't touched the game in a while having gotten distracted by others, but so far Demon's Souls is the only FromSoftware game I'm playing where I'm running a strength build using the claymore. Quality build with the Hollowslayer Greatsword is working great for me in DS3.
Lore wise, Anri probably had the help of Pale Shade at some point since Horace is dead. Only if pontiff wasn’t killed in their world, like Hodrick and Aldrich after you kill them aren’t, and have to be summoned into the NPC’s world to help them finish the job.
Did you find out how to get his swords to properly show their effects? I noticed in some earlier videos the flames and darkmoon effects don't appear on his swords. Nice work if you did

How did those npcs take that many hits, some of them took a full 7 hit combo and barely lost half a health bar. The player character would be dead long before that lmao
