I really like this one to be honest. I’d probably give it an 8 or 8.5 out of 10. All of APC’s strengths come together to make the best episode of this very short, sordid run. Ren’s childhood is captivating and beautifully drawn, you really feel everything that the character goes through and the scenes of Mr. Horse and his interactions are pretty funny. I also like the ending but it’s super out of place for an R&S cartoon, it just kinda feels like they didn’t know how to end and decided to make it a big fight scene. Also the “Dewey, Cheatum & Howe” writing on the wall is actually a reference to The Three Stooges (Altruists is filled with inside jokes regarding them).
I salute you for recognising the few good things about this episode, instead of just sh*tting on it like most RUclipsrs who have reviewed it in the past.
This is the best APC episode and it still embodies that axiom, "be careful what you wish for". It has the intense psychodrama of the classic episodes but also beats you over the head with its violence to the point of repetition. Everything with Ren and Mr. Horse is great, the flashback not so much. Though given that he's an unreliable narrator it makes sense his parents would be so arbitrarily psycho.
This is one of the big ones I've been waiting for. Last time I saw this episode years ago, I thought it really went all out with the psychodrama and turned it all the way up to 11, inspired by a ton of classic movies and film noir. I noticed a lot of that feel in the other cartoons John had made before, including Ripping Friends and Boo Boo Runs Wild. Anyway, I wouldn't have minded this show as much if they had gone more in that direction with the freakouts. I still would have preferred the original episodes, but compared to the others this series gave us, there was a lot more going on IMO.
I think it’s a reference to a Flintstone episode where Barney and Fred both turn into heels just like the one here after they yell at their wives. Note that John K referenced Flintstones cartoons previpusly in Sven Hoek so he might have done it again.
Yep; from the season 3 episode “Swedish Visitors,” the big guy with white hair says, “Duh, he is Ollie, you are Sven!” many times. In an interview, John K talked about that scene being something that he and his friends oft referenced as kids, so he put it into the cartoon as a tribute.
The cancel episode life sucks was supposed to be a prequel to this episode where it shows what ren to Stimpy was telling him about dark twisted things about life and how nothing matters and saying whole words to Stimpy
Ngl the background where Ren Hoek picking the frog back to his childhood, Im talking about this moment 10:51, got reused in Music Video "Close but no Cigar" composed by Weird AI
I was actually scarred when I watched this episode (Fact: there is an unfinished prequel to this called “Life Sucks” if you don’t know already to a part where Ren tells Stimpy a story of the 13th century kid crusade way after he tells stimpy how much life ‘sucks’ in the very beginning of it)
He didn't think it was appropriate for kids in this version (he says as much in the commentary). It just would have originally been a psychodrama like Space Madness if it had aired on Nick, and all the (unnecessary) disturbing stuff would have been left out.
I think that Ren only blames the doctor at the beginning for messing him up just so he doesn't have to deal with his fucked up childhood (which is the actual reason why he is messed up). A cool detail in the episode is that Ren copies the way his mother used the gun to hit his father on the head in the ending scene to beat up Mr Horse. There are a ton of cool little details people miss with this episode , it's very misunderstood
Ren seeks help is an episode that truly is a mixed bag. On one hand the concept of ren finally going to a therapist is very interesting and the animation is pretty good for the most part. However on the other hand for how gross and extremely evil ren is, honestly sours the whole thing. Also at this point you can really tell John K. Is inserting a lot of his person and life into this series, which is honestly incredibly disturbing and makes me very worried for whats to come.
This is the best and most tolerable episode of APC. Things happen, there's decent pacing and I like the psychological horror atmosphere of the episode. It has a LOT of flaws, but it's something I feel like I haven't wasted my time watching. 5/10
Tbh, I like the good parts of Ren Seeks Help. "Ren: Doctor…I need help. Mr. Horse: Obviously. (Gets the dust from out of his pipe as Ren heads toward the couch) Ren: Should I lie on the couch? Mr. Horse: If you’d like. (Ren tries to get on the couch) Ren: I’m doing it. See me do it. (He successfully gets on the couch) Mr. Horse: You’re doing it. Ren: I done it. Mr. Horse: Yes, you have. (Ren turns his head and we cut to Mr. Horse in his chair, smoking his pipe, next to Ren. We cut back to Ren) Ren: I’m…I-I’m a terrible person, doc. (Tears up) I’m mean to everybody…and I’m especially mean…to those who love me most. (Mr. Horse writes on his notepad while Ren speaks) I’ve got issues! (He gets up and points at Mr. Horse, which causes him to drop his pencil and notepad) I’m not crazy or anything! Mr. Horse: (Gently moves Ren’s hand away) Of course not, Mr. Höek. Let’s just calm down. (Pats Ren’s knee) It’s perfectly normal to be nervous talking to a professional. Now relax and we’ll see just how sick you really are, shall we? (Smiles and moves his eyebrows up and now. Ren has calmed down at this point) Ren: Okay. (He lays down on the couch as Mr. Horse gets his notepad again) Should I tell you about my childhood? Mr. Horse: If you must. Ren: My first memory…long ago…" "Ren: WHAT KIND OF A PSYCHOLOGIST ARE YOU?! Mr. Horse: Psychologist?! Are you nuts?! I’m a HORSE! (Shows himself to Ren) If this is the way it's gonna be, (Rolls up his sleeves) I’m gonna beat the living walrus protector out of you! (He starts punching Ren in the face. Eventually Ren dodges and looks around and grabs a telephone, which he uses to smack Mr. Horse in the face. Ren then jumps him and starts to scratch him. Mr. Horse frantically tries to get the gun from earlier, but the gun drops on the floor. Ren bites his arm, but then notices the gun. He grabs it and starts to violently beat Mr. Horse with it. He smacks him with it for a bit until Mr. Horse goes unconscious.)"
Ren seeks help is one of the best episodes from apc which really isn’t saying much because of how bad apc is. The positives I have about the episode is that it has a legitimately good concept that could have worked and become great if it was executed well and I liked how it focuses on one of my favorite traits of ren which is his insane side but this was also executed pretty badly, having a good title card, the scenes where mr. horse and ren are interacting with each other which imo has good dialogue, and seeing mr. horse himself was a treat. The episode, unlike other apc episodes, doesn’t bore me to death and has a story and plot that kept me engaged and entertained despite it being terrible. The other negatives you all are familiar with like the animal torture, bad editing, crappy story that is good on paper but bad in execution, ren being unlikable, dragged-out scenes, a lot of unfunny gags, etc. The ending where mr. horse snaps is a funny and engaging scene and The line “psychologist I’m a horse” made me laugh out loud which is a positive, but it got ruined by the dragged out scene with the frogs attempt at suicide. I liked the that’s all folks ending card and that’s it. All in all, a meh episode which has some contents that makes this episode better than other apc episodes 4/10.
I was looking forward to this recap and it certainly didn't disappoint. I thought there was a fair chance you'd get very conflicted about this episode.
Not gonna lie I actually liked this episode. It had some bad animation errors (Like when the background changed a few times out of no where) and this episode atleast had jokes and wasnt just shock and disturb. So overall maybe a 7.5 or a 8/10 (Yes most of that is for the animation)
This episode is interesting because its the closest thing we'll ever see to John K's biography on screen. Its quite horrifying but there are some amusing parts that make it one of the best APC episodes. The negatives- its still pretty slow, the gross-out is way extreme / not very funny here (Beavis & Butthead did the frog jokes better) and we don't get to see more of Stimpy or what was going on with him. Mr Horse is cool here though. Very good animation too. And it is better than Onward and Upward at least. I think this was the episode that John really wanted to make as there is a lot of effort put into it. I'd give it maybe a 6/10.
Remember when people (little kids who followed cartoon reviewers like they were the gospel…. I was one of them) LOATHED this episode? Thank god that’s over with! Also, According to Thad Komorowski’s Sick Little Monkey’s Book, this episode was the only one in which John K. not only spent equal time with the main Spümcø studio in Los Angeles and the one in Ottawa set up for tax reasons, but also got along with pretty much everyone involved in the episode. THAT’S how great of an episode this is, the only episode in which people outside of John really had a blast working on this travesty of a series.
It's actually the most "adult" episode of the show. It's effective at making the audience feel uncomfortable. People just automatically think that makes it "bad" because it's not funny. It's funny in a twisted way, but I think the story is supposed to be a tragedy. Ren is a psychotic but sympathetic character. He's a victim of his own psychology, his environment, and the people who failed him, which ultimately led to his downfall. Much like John K. himself.
@@mrbanks456 Agree with everything, except that Ren was never be a likable or sympathetic character, he was always evil and vile from the very beginning, John imagined a sadistic and cruel sociopath. By the way Ren was naturally inspired by Peter Lorre , Even in the 80s, the first concept about Ren was that he kidnapped a baby and wanted to kill her if he didn't get paid for it. Ren should be liked like you like Freddy Kruger, he's on the level of a serial killer and an evil psychopath. I think Ren is one of the best evil cartoon characters in the world, he's incredibly cruel , pathetic and quite evil at the same time. Ren will never help you and when it seems that there might be some good in him, he will stab you in the back and let you die (Last Templation of Ren) And what makes it even more amazing is that he's extremely insane and even the joker himself would be proud I'm sure of his psychopathic laugh.
Honestly... I actually really like this episode. APC sucks but I feel like this ep does what APC should've done (still a couple unnecessary scenes like the birth scene but most of it is surprisingly well written).
Honestly, i don't think this episode is the worst, it's not great, but it's the least bad, it has a story, which is more i can say for the rest of the episodes, at least except Altruists. Before the internet got a hold of it, plenty of critics praised this episode, and wished for more of it. I'm not a fan of a the animal abuse tho, but still it's tame in its entirety.

Ren is shocked by Stimpy's tone at first but he punched Stimpy in the face Ren: The grocery store begins with you! Your father just left because of you! Don't you get it you infant! You liar! Stimpy suddenly scream and cries Ren feels guilty Flashback closes
25:36 I think the bunny picture on the wall is a reference to the stimpys invention scene where ren has pictures of cartoon animals on his wall above the bed
I’m loving your APC episodes This is prob the best APC episode so buckle up To make this episode better I would’ve changed the drag on some parts and also change the narration on Ren’s memories. I would’ve changed it to hint towards the bad things, but sound innocent. For example: 11:21 “I loved my new tricycle, it had great wheels.”
To me, this episode was... somewhat tolerable. I can only assume that Ren did something... *sensual* to Stimpy which was... too *fluctuous* to mention.
PhantomStrider and Mr. Enter really overblew the idea that this episode being the worst episode of any cartoon ever. They didn't even see the others which I think are worse. Ren Seeks Help, to me anyway, is the least bad of the APC episodes.
@@NateTheGnat actually, the entire APC is bad, even Stimpy color palette looks off (he looks the worst) Only good thing of it was that clip of Stimpy and Ren dancing to the hold the Tiger song lol
I think this episode is really over-hated. So many say its the worst episode of APC and so many critics dub it “the worst cartoon episode ever" but it is easily way better than Onward and Upward and Naked Beach Frenzy.
I actually feel bad for the original ren and stimpy fans who had this adult party rip off and it shows ren torturing the poor lil frog, I mean being mean and cruel towards animals is NOT funny!! Why do they always have to ruin those good old cartoons from the 90s/early 2000s I dont get it......
Not the best Ren and Stimpy episode overall, but definitely one of the better APC episodes. It's fucked up but also ridiculous to the point it just loops right back around to weirdly funny at times. At least, that was my impression when I first saw this ep. Couldn't even stomach Onward and Upward, sadly, the concept of that one wasn't too bad, just way too gross for me especially compared to the original series. Naked Beach Frenzy tho was... it was kinda strange, I wonder if you're going to even be able to show clips of that one once you get to it lol.
An APC episode that isn't complete garbage, my lord. They're wasn't to much filler compared to other APC episodes (only the first scene & the last scene), Ren going to therapy had pretty good visuals and the therapy scenes had pretty good atmosphere. The overly detailed facial expressions/animation actually worked with the twisted tone of the episode. It's just in execution the episode fell flat, the past scenes were just a whole lot of animal torture, John. K's dad acting was pretty piss poor, and the fight scene between Mr House and Ren ruined the atmosphere the episode built up. Overall, it's an mixed bag that could've been better, but it could've been far worse. 5.5/10
Also, seeing people call this episode a "Psychodrama" just doesn't feel right. Calling this Mixed bag a psychodrama would put it in the same category as classics like Space Madness, Hermit Ren, Stimpy's fan club, and Stimpy's Invention. Which I don't like, it's more fair to call Ren Seeks Help a Melodrama.
The concept would've been better if the dark humor was done with a sense of irony and exaggeration. Like instead of him doing actual psychotic, depraved things growing up, he instead does cartoony maniacal acts. The original show would've done that in way more entertaining and wittier fashion. This is just shock value and not even good shock humor.
Bud let me tell you, if you have dignity you better back out of this reboot now. Please don't subject yourself to this reboot please. Don't suffer through this please. Back out now when you still have the chance!!
This is the best episode of apc. It's not good but it's the one with the least amount of problems
I have mad respect for you, for not just ignoring A.P.C . I do not the willpower, to sit through all of these, especially due to how long these are.
The law firm of Dewey, Cheatum & Howe is a classic Three Stooges gag!

"Heel" can mean either mean the back part of a shoe or a bad person.
"Psychologist?! Are you nuts?! I'm a horse!"
The BG characters from Ren’s longest shuffle to seek help look not to out of place in any of the Fleischer cartoons.
I even saw a Bimbo lookalike in that crowd. The hippo looked straight out of one of those Walter Lantz Oswald cartoons too kind of.
For real, hell one of them even looks like Bimbo from the early Betty Boop cartoons.

Hey, the reason why Ren turns into a heel is because heel is a dated term referring to someone who’s inconsiderate or untrusting.

I don't want to know what kind of sick and twisted mind finds this funny!
5:45 when ren kicked the can, i felt that
25:36 I think the bunny picture on the wall is a reference to the stimpys invention scene where ren has pictures of cartoon animals on his wall above the bed
I’m loving your APC episodes
This is prob the best APC
episode so buckle up
To make this episode better I would’ve changed the drag on some parts and also change the narration on Ren’s memories. I would’ve changed it to hint towards the bad things, but sound innocent.
For example:
11:21 “I loved my new tricycle, it had great wheels.”
We all knew this dreaded day would come...
According to John K. the couch scene was included to make Ren seem extra pitiful. They probably should've animated his mouth moving though...
Honestly, this was the only episode I liked from APC
23:47 I’M MR FROG, THIS IS MY SHOW, I HAVE THE GUN, THIS IS THE END, I LOVE YOU *credits scroll by screen really fast*
Out of curiosity, how far are you in the Sick Little Monkeys book?
Right before the APC chapter
@@renandstimpyrecap Nice.
5:27 Disney 😭
looks like a creepypasta.
That episode gotta be one of the most gross for me, it feels soo wrong (as if APC isn't too lol)
this is bad but Onward is worse to me...
@@NateTheGnat actually, the entire APC is bad, even Stimpy color palette looks off (he looks the worst)
Only good thing of it was that clip of Stimpy and Ren dancing to the hold the Tiger song lol
I think this episode is really over-hated. So many say its the worst episode of APC and so many critics dub it “the worst cartoon episode ever" but it is easily way better than Onward and Upward and Naked Beach Frenzy.
pooberty
Is it grimdark fanfiction?
the only good episode in adult party cartoon (and the most famous one)
Stimpy criyeng is funny 🤣
Misspelling "Crying" as "criyeng" is also pretty funny
@@ItchyBurritoMiniAltThingykinda funnier. i felt pretty bad for stimpy
@@vivimos_en_una_sociedad7758 Indeed
23:48 Nice.
Im locked in
you mean APC or the new reboot? because they are both pretty bad...
@@NateTheGnat
I'm talking about the APC reboot since he's reviewing it now, when he shouldn't
I don't think the reboot is bad, I think it's boring.
Do cans without label
He will do it soon or never because Cans without labels is a George Liquor Cartoon (I guess)
@@Sashaprongg384Yeah thats right
Also a mickey bastard cartoon if that's a thing
@@Mr3DLC It's not.
@@Mr3DLC it's donald bastard not mickey bastard
(I kiss you)
This is the Most horrible episode of all ren and stimpy series
Na, Pregnant Stimpy & Naked beach Frenzy are way more disgusting compared to this episode.
have you seen uncle ai episodes
