The eel is actually dead, it's just the salt causing the muscles to contract and relax which makes it look like it's squirming. Still a bit disturbing, but not cruel.
Unlike their live octopus dish where the arms are full of mini brains (masses of neurons) and wiggle with real intention and not just because of heat and salt.
It’s not the salt that’s causing muscle twitches; that’s an urban myth that comes from a science experiment using skinned frogs legs. For eel and other fish, as long as the head is off then it’s dead. These eel were in pieces so there’s no way it’s alive and suffering. BUT Like David Wills here already said, writhing squid and octopus ARE still alive and most likely in pain. Cutting off the “head” doesn’t kill it and their multiple brains are still intact. And yea it’s a pretty cruel cuisine.
i only discovered you in 2018 and i swore i had my favorite travel shows already, but you have QUICKLY (!!!) risen to the top cause of your focus on cheap, yummy eats in all the places i wanna visit.
NawfDallasNick most of the things Mike buys are from food stands and 7/11 that’s why she probably means cheap but yea mike sometimes buy hella expensive food ion even think it’s worth it LMAO
It's been 40 years since I left Korea when I was a child, and I'm planning a trip in 2020. I've been binge watching your videos, and I'm so excited to go to the markets and eat everything! Love your channel!
This is the only RUclips channel that makes me jealous that he gets to live his food dream and travel. Each video I watch makes me more hungry for Korean, Japanese, Chinese and other Asian food.
One thing I like about your food channel is that you never underestimate the veggie element. A good vegetable combination is capable of enhancing most of the popular food items; even the most delicious piece of kobe beef will shine if paired with the right vegetables. I see most channels treat greens as a necessary evil, or profess their "love" for them with the actual enthusiasm of a 1% parting from their money; not you: you crunch on those leaves with gusto. It's pleasure to watch, makes us gourmet big eaters feel less alone, and it ends up teaching the value of comprehensive good food. Love ya!
@@Johnny-hn9ts Its the personality that brings people to watch his videos more often than not and its really hard to get a good personality that resonates with the audience and doesn't irritate the hell out of them. Let me give you an example. Adam Richmond from Man V. Food , great guy , chill dude and gave off an aura that made it so you liked him. He was a likable guy. Now he's replaced with someone else who doesn't have the same exact type of charisma as him and it shows because the show itself isn't as good as it was when he was at the helm.

@@@eltirick6550 It is because the neves still carry electrical potential. In contact with salt, they get connected and react, thus causing muscle movement.
I understand one's apprehension while watching something that fresh be cooked. Its actually rather humane. No worse that any other meat being processed or me taking a deer and cooking an organ while still so fresh its warm and has a crunch. Or taking a bite out of the heart, raw.
I love your authenticity. I loved your remorse for the eel. I do see it as a form of respect for your food. I’ve always wanted to go to Asia and try street food!!! Subscribed!

Mike! It's been years going to Korea. I regret watching any of your vids, but can't resist not to watch. You are my nightmare, but it's something I can't avoid. Hoping to go next year to visit my relatives. Also, engorge myself with food of course! I was visiting my folks in Hawaii for few weeks before you went there. I took every opportunity to eat as much food as possible. And yes I do eat a lot. eating food = life hobby. So much envy as I watch your video clips. Especially Korean food. Thanx Mike for the nightmarish vids. Keep up the great adventures of eating. You are living my dreams.
Mickey your western upbringing is showing. Always liked knowing it was alive when cooked. Like getting fresh crab or lobster at the wharf in San Francisco.
yeah it's just that Korean vendors label it as honey hottok. IMO honey wouldn't taste as good because it takes longer to caramelize sugars in honey than granulated sugar and the burnt caramel taste and the grainy sugar residue texture is what gives hottok its good taste
Well, actually when Korean people describe something sweet they use the word "ggul" as an adjective. "ggul" doesn't necessarily mean honey but it means "sweet like honey"
It's likely the eel was already dead before being cooked. Salt added during the cooking process causes the muscle fibers to contract which makes it look like the eel is still alive/squirming; this is a good sign of freshness. The same thing happens with fresh frog legs!
