Ya... first time playing this back in 97 or whenever it came out, the true version of Ultimecia, how she looked, what she was saying, and the music... it was chilling.
@@VanessaHolguin It hits hard, because she possessed Edea Kramer(Matron), as the sorceress that killed a man at the podium, in front of a large crowd in Deling City. I like how the ending shows exactly when Matron got possessed. There was a reason she was trying to set Adel free, and it coincides as to why they shut down communications 17 years prior to the events of this plot. I think Ultimecia possessed Adel before Laguna and his team sealed her off in space. I didn't think much of it when I first played. The mission in Dollet in the first part of the plot, is a huge foreshadowing to the whole entire narrative presented to this point.
When Ultimecia started speaking I'm her final form, about their childhood, dreams and emotions, I think what happened here, she knew she was about to loose, all her planning and ambitions failed, but the time compression had already begun. By having squall and the others reflecting and remembering their pasts, that allowed the reversal of the compression, and for a point in time to be established back to when they were children, allowing Ultimecia to focus on that moment in time and travel back, in order to pass her powers to Edea.

She draws apocalypse from her former form. Edit: if you think about it, she watched them grow up along Matron, when she possessed her. It's scary that the final boss is also someone who watch them grow until they left the orphanage.
Depending on exactly when she possesses Edea that could mean she's just a tragic figure looking for a place to die and she literally raised these kids and created SeeD with the intent of having someone to defeat her, tbh her constant destruction of countless SeeDs and the fact that she's known throughout history so would be hated from birth by those in her timeline would strongly lend to that trope.

you know.. from 4:31 - 4:38 you try to kill zell using rinoa..and suddenly ultimecia helps you out..so literally two sorcerers have a little conspiracies here lol
The way Ultimecia talks. The way she laughs when the battle starts. It scares me. It's like even though she knows there is a possibility she will lose the fact that she brought you this far and took so much from squall and the gang gives her pleasure that she still won in some instances.
That's what Ultimecia gets for bootlegging Squall's Ring. You know she drew Griever from that copy of the ring Rinoa had Zell take from Squall in Disc two.
And the funny thing is that Ultimecia (in the Japanese text) summon Griever, then junctions herself onto Griever, to mock what strength they can muster against her. And if you have been interacting with everything enough, Griever and Ultimecia-on-Griever go by very quickly.
I wouldn't agree on that completely, but I like that we know basically nothing about her motivations. She does sound like some sort of tragic villain from the dialogue, but, in the end, we don't know. Sometimes, knowing less about a villain is for the better. I don't need Ultimecia to have a tragic, sad backstory. All I need is some cool music and an overall cool fight. And Ultimecia certainly has one of the best fights in the series.
@@D-Nova My argument for her being the best villain is that others wanted to control the world, and maybe the cosmos, but Ultimecia wanted to control and absorb all of time and every possible reality. But I like every villian in the OG series so don't get me wrong, it's a very very close race for every game.
Ultimecia in her final form isn't even the same "her" in my opinion as the one we see in the red dress, I think she is junctioned to some sort of omipotent being the same way Rinoa was junctioned to Adel, and by defeating that version they stop the cycle of the sorceress curse, because they actually went outside of time to defeat the true sorceress that has been repeating this cycle. the only question is when Edea receives Ultimecia's powers in the endgame, does the cycle just start over. I just love time travel concepts, and this one is one of my favorites.
I remember the first time I played this game. I think I was maybe 11 years old at the time. I got all the way to the final area right before Ultimecia and my brother wiped my memory card accidentally. Needless to say I started a new game and it was just as amazing as the first time. I finally did beat it. Such an amazing experience that I'll never get again as an adult I'm sure. I was infatuated by the game.
Every Final Fantasy game up until FFX has amazing, deep and fascinating storylines and masterful soundtracks. I'm especially impressed with the high quality videos of FFVIII. I remember thinking it was SO cool and amazing the first time I saw a clip of the sorceress Adel. To this day this is one of my favorite FF games, only beaten (in my mind) by FFX
Always been a massive fan of 8...I'm kind of wondering if Ultimecia's final form was the inspiration source for Anima from FFX? With the whole "other" version hidden underneath?
For sure. Seymores mum is the „dead” human body linked to herserself which is Anima. For me it looks like its dead rinoa linked to Ultimecia. In FF dissidia rinoa can cast Apocalypse btw. Pretty sure Ultimecia and Rinoa are the same Person but even if not, its definitly rinoa junctioned to Ultimecia ! Ultimecia also couldnt possibly know about the lion or griever. Its only logical rinoas grief of being alone actually became a summoning.
@@juliuscasar7202 In the Japanese version she states that she draws it from Squalls ring. Also, c'mon now, look at Rinoa and Ultimecias faces in Dissidia, they're completely different. And not in a growing up kind of way, her head is far more longer and slim than Rinoas rounder face.
She was one of the hardest for me to beat. Hell, I couldn’t of been no older than 9 when I was playing it the first time, clueless to how everything and junctions worked and barely scraping by winning somehow. Such a masterpiece and will revisit it for the rest of my life
I love her final form, that design inspired the aeon Anima in FFX, one of the most iconic in the entire series. Great boss fight and SUPERB musical score!!
Another factor, though if considered due to a battle mechanics, that dismisses the Rinoa/Ultimecia theory, when fighting her if Rinoa is beaten in the fight, she will cast her into the time stream along with anyone else who does. If Rinoa is meant to become ultimecia, then the sorceress wouldn't have cast her into the timestream. But if Rinoa actually is Ultimecia's past self, then Ultimecia knew even if she cast Rinoa into the timestream it wouldn't matter because fate was predetermined herself surviving, and so accepting she would lose in this fight in order for Rinoa to survive.
You Know why FF8 is so memorable to me? It's THIS boss fight right here!! Ultimicia kept winning time and time again, It was Hell!! It took me days before i could finally beat her, in an almost 1-hour showdown, which i BARELY survived with multiple Renzokukens from Squall (last man standing) and his Lionheart Gun Blade. I wasn't satisfied. I started the game afresh, took my time to develop ALL the Characters, their techniques and Weapons to the Max. THIS time, I wiped Ultimicia off the floor!! Beat her over and over again!! Very Satisfying. My Favorite Team; SQUALL, QUISTIS and ZELL 😊 This Boss fight taught me how to play ALL the Final Fantasies that succeeded FF8. Till present…...
Great comment. What I really liked about FF8...is everything...the relaxed beginning at Balamb where you are merely a student...the satisfaction you get when you win your first cards, beat ifrit at fire cavern....the relaxed first mission where you go to Timber by train...and the slow and steady climax until the grand finale....
I like how it makes you think the music is gonna be soft. When the music started in her final form, I thought it was gonna be the weakest soundtrack for battle, but then that extreme music kicks in (no pun intended), and it amped the whole fight up.
My first experience with any Time Mage, since this was my first Final Fantasy. She was the worst, first time around. She felt exactly how it felt taking finals back in school, throwing everything you learned back at you. I was stupid and really thought I could bring back whoever got absorbed into time. On my first playthrough I only ever put junctions on three characters. They are practically nothing without the junctions, and GFs at their aid. Edit: You committed a grave crime making Zell Punch himself silly on that Griever phase, haha!
9:24 I just now realized. The neutron star is shaped more like a ring than a sphere. Also "Maybe I'm a Lion" really gives some rockin' Spyro vibes! 💜🐲🎶
God this fight really caught me off guard when I first played it. I had no idea she'd summon random 3 people... I think it took me a few attempts to beat her. I should emphasize I played this since release. I would reserve this game for months lol.
Will forever love this fight. Will also appreciate this fight as the first time it forced me to re-evaluate my strategy after failing so much and more importantly to not have all the GFs on just 3 characters. Real FML moment the first time I fought her lol
@@raventheredpanda7047 "Artemisia" is a possible romanization of Ultimecia's name (and is apparently used in the DE/IT translations), so while she didn't appear directly, the final boss alludes to her by name!
It’s also cool that when you scan Ultimecia she has the entire universe as her dress, just saying, no other villain sought to control all of time, everyone else had mommy issues or a big brother complex in the “trilogy” of 7 8 and 9, Ultimecia is just pure evil.
In the Japanese version, Ultimecia was probably clearly traumatized by people hunting sorceresses and wanted a perfect place in time, so she does have etc. issues. Only translation issues prevent that and she is basically some harassing force from the future.
the whole end of this game is holy shit 😂 like the grandiose level is off the charts. it just keeps getting more and more epic and goes on for like over an hour 🤣

@@SirAuron777junction system is very logical. The only downside of it is the grinding you need to do if you are aiming for perfect walkthrough. With card mod ability everything gets much easier though.

I wouldn't mind waiting for more years, maybe after the remake of FFVII sequel. This is a masterpiece that needs time to be developed as a remake. Many gamers, maybe in their 40s, will have tears in their eyes.
The music at 17:28 is the same as the beginning of the regular battle theme from final fantasy 1-6 and ff9. Why they put it here and not in the regular battle theme I don't know but at least it's here. Final fantasy 7 didn't have it at all and final fantasy 9 was it's last appearance in the games that wasn't a remix.

5:31 Ultimecia: I shall summon the most powerful GF forged from your mind. If your strength and mind both are stronger, you shall also suffer more. Heh heh. 9:05 Ultimecia: Hehe. Losing your memories? The GF's terror is just the beginning. It's time to show you the true terror of GF. Show them your power, Griever! 11:15 Ultimecia: The prelude is over! I shall junction myself unto Griever!
She was my magic caster in my play throughs. I always gave her 100% zombie for her Status-J to make her reliable, and spam healing magic. Yeah, this never worked on most bosses. Other than that, I made her the White/Black Mage. Her Slot was just her being a troll after being trolled in battle. She was reliable.
One of the things I find funny is seeing moves like Meltdown, Shockwave Pulsar, Hell’s Judgement, Apocalypse, Lion’s Heart, and many of the moves that are seen in Dissidia look so not as dramatically done or godly looking where as in the game series like this one for instance, looks so freaking Godly. Even when Ultimecia is fused with Griever in this game it looks so epic whereas in Dissidia it’s not as exciting looking.
speaking of, I always had a theory of my own. Many fans believe Ultimecia is Rinoa for obvious reasons...but what if she was Quistis? Quistis OUTRIGHT STATES on multiple occasions that she was once deeply infatuated with Squall, even thought she was in love with him, and detested Seifer; plus, she was the only true blue mage in the game, i.e., the only character, PC or otherwise, who could mimic opponents' seemingly exclusive Limit Breaks, and is even shown to be capable of two should-have-been-impossible attacks: mimicking Ray Bomb, which was a mechanical maneuver, and using Shockwave Pulsar...which is a maneuver not introduced by its "originator" until the final battle, and is used by Griever, who was originally created by Squall...and is now controlled by Ultimecia.

@@huwisel If you want to just go AWOL on limit breaks, because you have the Megalixirs you get from Bahamut's card, and can heal really fast after using your breaks, you'll want Squall and Rinoa.
This whole string of final boss fights is my favourite in the whole franchise. If you know what you're doing, it's not stressful or difficult. It's just really exciting and fun. You get by the fight just before by getting Squall to injure himself or you keep giving him Aura Stones so he's always on his limit break, and repeatedly using Lionheart. In the final fight, you don't need to do that, because he's on his break every time the party's health is reduced to 1 HP. You just keep curing with the Megalixirs you get from cashing in Bahamut's card, after flinging your breaks at the thing. If Rinoa has her ultimate weapon same as Squall, and can use Shooting Star, you can really wreak havoc, because it's as damaging as Lionheart. It's great fun. The second time I played this, all it took was a single rifle shot from Irvine at the end to finish the fight.

And…"
That rumbling/ charge up sound @15:24. Always loved it from that moment till the end was fuckin fantastic.
12:02 The timing of that Renzoukoken coincided perfectly with that upward trill leading into the second verse of the song. That was very satisfying.
I wonder how many people know that Meltdown works on Ultimecia.
Meltdown and Doomtrain are the best spell/summon. its almost a shame they didnt come back in later games
If I remember correctly meltdown works on everything.
Lionheart never looks old.
at first i thought when the rest of the useless party would affect the ending, nevermind they're apparently back after the battle
Same, when they died I restarted the battle to try and keep them alive it was a waste of time lol
10:34 that’s actually quite dark to see Zell being absorbed into time once defeated
I just found it funny how he punched himself knocking himself out
you know.. from 4:31 - 4:38 you try to kill zell using rinoa..and suddenly ultimecia helps you out..so literally two sorcerers have a little conspiracies here lol
Ultimecia = Rinoa
love the music that goes with the shockwave pulsar, it gives such a strong powerful feeling
The music makes this entire battle.
This party is from disc 1! The first time you fought Ultimecia in Edea's Vessel. XD
I love the music.
The way Ultimecia talks. The way she laughs when the battle starts. It scares me. It's like even though she knows there is a possibility she will lose the fact that she brought you this far and took so much from squall and the gang gives her pleasure that she still won in some instances.
It's a shame Griever is so quick to beat, he's got all of the best battle themes in the game
I could listen to Maybe I'm A Lion all day
That's what Ultimecia gets for bootlegging Squall's Ring. You know she drew Griever from that copy of the ring Rinoa had Zell take from Squall in Disc two.
Legendary Beast didn't even get played until he use Shockwave Pulsar and it is entirely possible to skip it
And the funny thing is that Ultimecia (in the Japanese text) summon Griever, then junctions herself onto Griever, to mock what strength they can muster against her. And if you have been interacting with everything enough, Griever and Ultimecia-on-Griever go by very quickly.
Ultimecia is the best boss in final fantasy history and I will die on a hill of bones to express that
I wouldn't agree on that completely, but I like that we know basically nothing about her motivations.
@@Maltozombie kefka and sephiroth are in my opinion the best.
@@wi11ow8 I agree
I played with Selphie, Squall and Zell. Zell for the shear brute strengh, Selphie for her magic and ”the end” and Squall for yeah you know…
I used sqúall Irvine and Zell for pure damage output. Also for the boiz! XD
Just noticed that ultimecia's head is upside down. Creepy.
Same!
Its actually Ellones head...😮
i really like Ultimacia design since i was young.
I think in your position I would have committed fratricide
Every Final Fantasy game up until FFX has amazing, deep and fascinating storylines and masterful soundtracks. I'm especially impressed with the high quality videos of FFVIII. I remember thinking it was SO cool and amazing the first time I saw a clip of the sorceress Adel. To this day this is one of my favorite FF games, only beaten (in my mind) by FFX
I neeed FF8 remake now
Even if they do it, it will never reach the epicness of the original....

@@juliuscasar7202
In the Japanese version she states that she draws it from Squalls ring. Also, c'mon now, look at Rinoa and Ultimecias faces in Dissidia, they're completely different. And not in a growing up kind of way, her head is far more longer and slim than Rinoas rounder face.
Best Final Fantasy...by far...with most epic final battle ever and music...ff10 and 9 are also epic but 8 is on another level really
The first time playing this battle ill never forget.
Seeing her true form after i thought i won.
This game holds a special place in my heart.
She was one of the hardest for me to beat. Hell, I couldn’t of been no older than 9 when I was playing it the first time, clueless to how everything and junctions worked and barely scraping by winning somehow. Such a masterpiece and will revisit it for the rest of my life
Exploring the junction system over 4 discs of gMe play was one of the best times of my childhood and i dont care how sad that is. It was awesome ^^
That series of end boss songs still slaps today
Rinoa and Selphie turned out to be the champs with their limit breaks. Wishing Star, Invincible Moon, full cure, rapture and the end! All helpful
My Favorite Team; SQUALL, QUISTIS and ZELL 😊
This Boss fight taught me how to play ALL the Final Fantasies that succeeded FF8.
Just one absolute banger after another, I don't even care that Ultimecia's motivations are never understood, lol
This is ONE of my favourite part on FF VIII...
Amazingg..
In the final tier of the new raid in Final Fantasy 14 this got remixed its so BA im happy that both Eden and Ultimicia got some love
Without making a single appearance...sure
@@TheGrandRevo eden is, not so much Ultimicia
Big ff14 fan, really enjoyed all of the Eden raids :)
@@raventheredpanda7047 "Artemisia" is a possible romanization of Ultimecia's name (and is apparently used in the DE/IT translations), so while she didn't appear directly, the final boss alludes to her by name!
@@Teratrain to be fair the Japanese name is much closer to Artemisia than to Ultimecia. Like Artemisia is a proper name but the hell is a Ultimecia
Its a shame we never saw angelo wish. All those cannons lmao.
Literally how DARE they skip FF8 and go to 9 on a remake. This is the best FF by far. Best characters, best story, best soundtrack.
It is almost on par with fighting Kafka in the end of FF VI.
@@lower_than_furries9727 6 is much better than 8. 8 kind of felt all over the place its story wasn't that great to me.
@@samyazaazazyel7701 I need to beat FF8, I just need to figure out the junction system, it confuses me. So far I’ve beaten FF 6, 7, and 9.
@@lower_than_furries9727 Yeah, if you don't revive any party members before the phase ends, they get replaces with another, based on the order you make. Here, she just takes the favor of selecting your starting party for you. She literally wanted to throw everything in your face from what you have been doing the whole game. I always wondered what was blowing away the junctions. Maybe just an over exposure to the time compression, Idk.
@@SirAuron777junction system is very logical. The only downside of it is the grinding you need to do if you are aiming for perfect walkthrough. With card mod ability everything gets much easier though.
FFVIII Remake, When?
last two years...
Probably never. For a lot of reasons. Of the Ps1 trilogy this games would be the hardest to translate to a 2021 game.
Villains with Time and Space manipulation is always at the top tier, stopping them means that you must defy every law in the universe and fight against the impossible. I love FF8 story and Ultimecia as a villain...
God her final form has the most satisfying death ever
Deadass I cheered out loud when you got fucking Lion Heart. That was an AMAZING display of power!
Bellissimo, che ricordi...però non hai azzeccato un trigger con squall hahahah
I see. Anima(FFX) got the design from Ultimecia's final form.
How is selphie so under developed for you? Her limit break kicks ass...wheres the HERO magic?
Wouldn't have beaten the game without her imo!
I wouldn't mind waiting for more years, maybe after the remake of FFVII sequel. This is a masterpiece that needs time to be developed as a remake. Many gamers, maybe in their 40s, will have tears in their eyes.
16:43 The casting of the Time Compression magic
Her lifeless human corpse dangling down like that never ceased to not scare me.
"i am ultimecia" "time will compress"..... cue epic music. jeez, this was such an epic boss battle.
I gave Squall Speed 20% and 40% boost and was able to slap her around she could barely do anything Lolz was only hitting for 1600 to 2000 damage of her 600,000 plus Hp she is still a scary Final boss

Ultimecia: I shall summon the most powerful GF forged from your mind. If your strength and mind both are stronger, you shall also suffer more. Heh heh.
9:05
Ultimecia: Hehe. Losing your memories? The GF's terror is just the beginning. It's time to show you the true terror of GF. Show them your power, Griever!
11:15
Ultimecia: The prelude is over! I shall junction myself unto Griever!
This is awesome everytime, as is the music....but like I said.... its FF7, that wrote history, I think
Remember who wrote history 😅 dont forget who yho are...dont forget where you come from! 😢
i love how final fantasy games reward you at the ending with great music and a exciting boss that is lower health than you.
Poor Selphie. Why would you let the most powerful final fantasy character ever leave!
That’s what I was gonna say XD the most op character and NEEDED for ultima weapon silly defeat.
Squall Limit Break is almost unfair....
Selphie: hold my nunchaku 💀....begin to cast The End
Out of all the FF villains I think Ultimecia's plan was the most extreme.
I got big trouble to beat Omega Weapon but finally did it and this final Biatch was eazy after OW 👌 Good fight and this brings alot good memorys 👍

@@huwisel Rinoa is a necessity, however, if she's able to use Shooting Star.
@@iainrobb2076 I think that depends on play style or preference.
