An accidental violation is still a violation. I know there was no malicious intent and I genuinely feel bad for him. Like I feel bad for anyone who’s getting a DNF because of forgetting to sign the scorecard or accidentally makes a turn in inspection - it’s unfortunate but it can happen. For me it’s not about “did he solve the cube” it’s about “did he break the rules”, and imo he did. Yiheng has done almost 2200 official solves and knows not to pick up the cube right after stopping the timer, he’s a pro. However the regulation is too vague and should be changed in a way that leaves no room for interpretation, to avoid this in the future. I have a feeling that because the regulation is vague and had been applied differently in the past there is a good chance that the DNF will be overturned. PS I’m not a teacher but I train our apprentices and I have an obligation to treat them the same and be fair and equally “strict” when it comes to grading :)

the term judge inspected cube is so vague that i think it's reasonable for yiheng to think it was inspected before then (judge was writing down time too)
It seems the solve should not stand All of this contention over whether the cube is solved is not is *completely* irrelevant, that isn't what's being objected against, it's about him touching and applying moves to the puzzle. "After stopping the timer, the competitor must not touch, apply a move, or make any change in alignment to the puzzle, until the judge has inspected the puzzle" "Penalty for applying a move to the puzzle after stopping the timer: disqualification of the attempt (DNF)." In this case, the judge doesn't glance at the cube between the timer stopping and the moves being applied, so the regulation was breached. If the WCA decides to change regulations, and then retrospectively apply them to this and other solves, then so be it. Personally. I think they should do this, I see no reason to think this solve shouldn't count aside from the regulations. but that isn't my job to decide how they should do that. I also think the regulations here are poorly worded/defined, there is no formal way to verify when a judge is done 'inspecting' the puzzle. It would make *much* more sense for it to just say that you can't touch it until the attempt is finished, they clearly define that in the regulations. "...acknowledge that the result is correct, complete, properly formatted, and clearly readable. This finishes the attempt."
No. If we continuosly allows the regs to be broken, it will not have a good outcome in the long-term for WCA. Sebastian Weyer touching the cube after WR solve was allowed as he was checking if it was solved completely. But this is just unacceptable. Only if we disqualify this record will the regs be taken more seriously. That's just an objectively correct opinion :)

Yeah that’s kind of it. It’s just some dumb WCA rule where if a competitor touch their own cube after the solve it’s a violation of the rules and should be considered a DNF. Yes, this dumb rule exists
