As a cuber and mom, the idea of a female podium to get young girls into cubing is solid, but what we really need are AGE BRACKETS! The only person who doesnt appear to be slowing down with age is Max so he's going to dominate no matter what, but man, a head to head single scramble showdown between two senior citizens sounds fun as heck! I think it's important to remember that many competitions are fun to watch because they include a round or two of folks who perform the skill in an approachable/watchable way. This not only allows watchers at home to feel like they are capable of doing it, but it provides excellent contrast to show how incredible the top tier performers really are. 15 years ago I would have said that including an under 10 bracket would be good for that purpose, but maybe not anymore lol.
in some comps they are podiums for age group but it depends on the sponsor of the comp
This is an interesting thought, I think I've become more convinced that age brackets may be a good idea as the community (at least here in CA) has gotten younger and cubing has turned into a "kids activity". But not sure if that's a bias since I'm also an "older" cuber
the smart cubes are coming!
3x3 and other twisty puzzles.
Smart cubes. Best tps. Lowest moves prizes
1:16 Ah yes, Mike, the one and only cis straight white man in the WCA, how diverse
🤣🤣🤣
Considering the requirements for these positions. Are they going to be paid positions? Because, some of them requires alot of knowledge.
WCA is entirely volunteer-run. Staff - Board members, delegates, committee/team members - work without pay. That’s partly why it can be difficult to find people to fill these positions, but it also distinguishes the people who have the passion and knowledge to fill them
Hmm I’d argue it could separate the people with passion from the people with knowledge 😅
@Speedcubenz it could definitely do that. But, hopefully they find the right person/persons for the job.
Rip hotel studio, twas a short run but a good one 🫡
We had a good run 🫡
Based airport stream
Ummmm BASED!
Hallo, on what days do you stream??
Usually Thursday morning New Zealand time
I'm in the minority here, but I don't like how "growth-oriented" cubing has become. I don't think it should become about money, nor attracting the most amount of viewers, etc. I love cubing as the niche hobby that it is
Valid! I think that if the wca keeps doing their thing regardless of what happens elsewhere then there will always be the chill, grass roots element of it simmering away :)
@ haha well said, I hope so.
The GAN Smartcubing Super League comes to mind as something designed from the ground up for entertainment, with money behind it. I could see a non-cubing sponsor backing them. For anyone else, I think they provide a good reference for the level of investment that you'd need to put into a cubing product for it to appeal to advertisers (and the general public!) I feel like it's going to happen, cubing is trending in that direction, but it still needs a level of dedication and professionalism that's lacking from all but maybe a handful of cubing events.
Gan SSL provided an amazing blueprint I think
I should start up the Oceanic League again
The more the merrier!
I definitely think a new league is good idea. I'd say I'm agree with most of what you're saying but the only thing I kinda disagree with is the abolishing of the average of 5 format. Imo monkey league definitely had good moments but a lot of the matches where I wasn't rooting for/interested in either of the competitors felt boring and drawn out. Especially in most cases when one cuber is significantly better than the other, giving them so many solves kinda defeats the competitiveness of it and its pretty much impossible for the lesser cuber to win. Especially in the last monkey league season, it just felt kinda pointless since yiheng was obviously gonna win and the only points anyone else got on him were because of screwups on yihengs end. Still, you could maybe do best 3 of 5 or something like Gan SSL but I do think it's important to not give people too many solves just to keep the skill gaps from showing too much. I also just wanted to say that I feel like Mayernik's streams of the major finals like worlds or nac are much better than you're giving them credit for. I agree that ones of smaller comps where there's only a couple of fast people solving at random stations aren't the best but the streams for worlds, nac, us Nats, etc were like really good honestly. I also felt like Gan ssl was not that great either. Like the story of Tymon going through all the losers brackets and stuff was cool from his perspective but as a viewer imo it was definitely not the case and the format was way too complicated for casual viewing. Anyway, sorry this was a bit long. Thanks for reading, lol.
Haha all good thanks for sharing!
I’m Chinese too though I’m not actually a fan of Mi Qi. But i really appreciate what he did for the community especially for the blindfold mains. Sad for his death 😢reminded me to alway love ourselves and offer help to my mates when they’re in trouble ❤RIP,Mi Qi
It’s called being an adult. You don’t owe us weekly streams. When your on we will watch 👌
Being an adult is overrated 😅
For professional speedcubing to truly take off, sponsorship must begin from within the community. Companies like Speed Cube Shop or The Cubicle should lead the charge in supporting this initiative. While I understand that Speed Cube Shop and The Cubicle may not have the massive cash flow to fund such a project independently, larger manufacturers like MoYu or GAN could step in and play a crucial role. Without internal backing, approaching external sponsors becomes significantly more challenging. An outside company might ask, “Why aren’t the companies within the community supporting this?” This could be seen as a red flag, deterring them from investing. Begin with something manageable: a $1,000 top prize, $500 for second place, and smaller incentives like $100 for additional challenges, such as a clean sweep. Surely, one of the local U.S. companies could invest $5,000 total for an event held once a quarter. Once a solid foundation like this is in place, it becomes much easier to approach external sponsors.
Yeah I hear what you’re saying, and maybe I wasn’t clear! I think we need both, but the ultimate goal is getting sponsors from outside cubing 👍
This is something i have never really moved from my thoughts into text form until now!! when i imagine a competition format which can make for an interesting competing experience and a marketable/very spectator friendly experience, i tend to picture something along these lines: A "comp" is made of multiple "phases" where competitors compete against each other through head-to-head best of 5 matches, both starting at the same time with a "3, 2, 1, go" indication similar to what is seen in nations cup and similar tournaments. The first few phases could involve a round robin style, where competitors are matched against other competitors of a similar skill level. After a match, competitors win/lose "points" based on the outcome of the match, the amount can be determined by things such as how much faster did their winning/losing solves win/lose by, if they beat/lost to someone of a higher/lower rank etc. After each phase, people are eliminated based on their overall ranking by points amongst other competitors, until we get to the last 16 (could be changed depending on competition size) remaining for a proper tournament bracket, of which the finals/semi finals matches could be longer (best of 9 or even 15?) obviously there are SO many improvements and drawbacks with this over our current competition format, not to mention the amount of experimentation it would take, but i would think that seeing another body to create a competition system like this could be so cool for cubing. Maybe this would be wishful thinking, but if there is a person/group of people really determined to bringing something new to how we compete against each other in cubing, it might be able to start happening sooner than we might expect. Really glad to finally get out these thoughts of mine out somewhere haha
Starting Donkey League rn 👍
lets go great idea!!!!!
Do it!
Tortoise league for senior cubers
I do like these non live stream yap videos more actually
That’s good to know! I have our 6 week Christmas holidays coming up so there will be a big break from regular streaming but I should still have time to pump a couple of these out each week to keep things moving
Not gonna lie... This hotel studio looks amazing. We need more videos from hotels 😂
Real bro 💯
Haha yeah it’s kinda nice, I’ll miss it! Checked out today, back to reality 🥲
Great idea acculy. I have had the same idea, and are confident that im not the only one. Wca is super fun and good, but it wont take cubing out to the world. I feel like most non-cubers dont even know that cubing comps exist, some of my friends thought i was joking when i said that i was going to a comp as a example. Of course its hard to force people to look at stuff their not intressed in, but if we just shuffle around the may the comps work they should work at comercial tv, right? I guess its not only i that enjoy watching things that i never, or a few times have tried myself.
Thanks for sharing! For me it’s not about forcing people to watch anything, but about getting it in front of more eyeballs in a way that’s easy to understand and access.
May be we should make clubs and tournament we can make teams of 10 and even sign cubers we can make a squad of 20 and 10 cubers playing
Teams is a really interesting idea!
Imagine being so fast the rules change cuz of you
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big. All success-stories I know started with a daydream. And you’ll never find out if it works if you don’t try.
Preach!
i enjoyed monkey league. I think it is a "sellable" format. it would need to be polished up a little. I'm not sure the "film yourself at home" would work. I could see something like ML playing on ESPN.
I agree, in its current format it feels like a minimum viable product version of what it could be. Not the finished product, but proof or performance 👍
I remember watching Worlds last year, really wanting to watch Sebastian Lee do his FIVE pyraminx solves. (This wasn't finals yet) And instead, what I got was someone who averages 14 seconds (no hate) get FOUR/FIVE solves shown. Sebastian who came SECOND, and had a shot to even win the whole thing, got ONE solve shown. I understand that there may have been miscommunication, but surely a person running the stream can point him out? He is a world class solver (whilst not 3x3), should definitely get as much attention as possible in the livestream, as that's what people want to watch if they aren't watching the main event, and if you aren't a cuber, and your watching pyraminx, you want to see the best of the best do it. (This is refering to 4:49)

4:08 in my opinion, it would be nice to have an appeal system for this especially if those attempts were proven to be solved and had PR potential.

hiiiii
Well lit bro 😎 temp studio no too shabby
Mate I'll be honest - this was a good opportunity to use the "I'm sorry" title lol
The part about how the judge has to "inspect" the puzzle before the competitor touches it is vague and nebulous. Kind of like when on a driving test, you look at the rear view mirror, but the driving instructor doesn't notice that you did because you didn't turn your head, just your eyes, so he gives you a penalty for not looking at the rear view mirror. Simple solution, just change the rule to you are not allowed to touch the puzzle until it is signed.
Just don't touch the cube 4Head
I got an unrelated question: why do they livestream some championships? That doesn't make any sence, I could just go to a championship and memorise what triple x cross yiheng used, and I never saw anyone stop me drom using phones on the waiting area. Like, the scrambles pdf is encrypted but in the biggest competition in the world the scrambles are free to peek?
9:23 honestly they should just streigth up change it to sign instead of inspect. That's what begginers believe so that wont affect the average person, and would be much clearer. Also no reoactive because it wouldn't make sence to be reoactive.
5:20 it was clearly solved, and video proof is more than enought. + WRC said they WOULD use video proof to remove penalties. Edit: 5:33 why?
