  • BJJ teaches you to keep working on getting out of difficult situations while simultaneously accepting that some things are in your control, while others are not.

Over the years, I've been asked what my greatest takeaway is from years of martial arts training, sometimes people seem surprised when I say mental calmness and falling down safely rather than 'ass kicking'...therefore I do concur good sir, and best wishes to you as you continue your journey!

A similar thought exercise helps me with my stress. Stressing about things you can control is productive. Stressing over things you can't control is a waste of time.

Your philosophy is similar to Stoicism... Follow the steps, give it your all, and let the chips fall where they may. Take comfort in the fact that you did everything you could with the knowledge and abilities you had at the time.

I would definitely agree that it is Stoic in flavor

There was a guy that was attacked by a sea animal. BJJ saved his life. Not that he used an armbar on the creature, but he did know to chill TFO, and save his strength. Fighting at some times instead of flailing, managing his breathing. I'm certain that that helped him.

Now THAT is an application of BJJ I've never heard about before!

Don't pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.

Time helps. But try and find a therapist you can talk to as well if you can. Jits is therapeutic but it isn't therapy.
