I donated a kidney to my nephew on 12/19/16. We both train BJJ. I just received my black belt on 5/2/19. So glad you are sharing your story!

Great video. I appreciate the offer, but I don't need to be bribed. I've been an organ donor for as long as I've had a driver's license. When the option was explained to me, even at 16 years old, I realized I was ethically obligated to allow the posthumous use of my organs for transplant purposes. There are few greater gifts one person can give another.

Much respect, Brother! I had a kidney problem about 6 years ago. I thought I was going to die, but I didn't. I had been out of the martial arts for several years before that. That event motivated me to get back into them, and now I am training as hard as I can on a regular basis as well as have a student to pass what I know along to. Best!!

We REALLY never truly know people. That guy you see everyday, and never talk to is an entire universe of experiences. I had a partial nephrectomy earlier this year to remove a cancer growth on my kidney, and I understood so much how you felt. Fortunately my experience was much less traumatic. Your video has helped me start to come to grips with what I went through. I am having a hard time rationalizing, and coming to grips with what I experienced. Its amazing how time flies, and now you can tell of your experiences. I'm sure there were days that dragged and the end was never in sight. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I love the message from being on the bottom of mount and your point about there being no guarantees, except that if you don't do the right things, you will not overcome the challenge. I'll share this on my channel's community tab. :)

Wow. I've been watching you for the last 2 years since I started doing jiu jitsu. During that same period of time I was in my last 2 years of medical school during which I became really interested in abdominal transplant surgery. I was blessed to have rotated on a few transplant services and meet many donors and recipients (healthcare is much worse in the US and our allocation system leaves A LOT to be desired, though it's improved since 2014). Everyone has such an amazing I just graduated med school in Dallas, TX and I'm about to start my general surgery residency in St. Louis with my end goal to do a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery (kidney, liver, pancreas). I hope to continue the jiu jitsu journey during surgery residency which will be tough, but I've learned a lot from your videos and was really inspired to hear this story! There's a lot on the way in kidney transplant. I've been fortunate to be doing some research on better organ allocation techniques and know of several groups at Hopkins, UCLA and UAB working hard on xenotransplantation (other animals, typically pigs at this point). Not sure we're that close to 3D printing organs, but in a year or two reperfusion boxes to keep harvested organs alive and healthy for days instead of hours will be the norm. Living donors exemplify some of humanities best qualities, how lucky you were to have had a literal community of people to be potential donors. There is talk in some states about 'opting out' of organ donation designation on driver's licenses rather than 'opting in' in order to address donation shortages, I'd love to know what you think of this.

Thank you stephen you give me hope. I started bjj about a year and a half ago, I’ve had to take 2 prolonged breaks from back injuries caused at work. Now I want to go back but I have to been diagnosed with some further medical issues, now i have to go thru some more tests to see where I stand. I’m going to go and at least do the drills. Once again I’m grateful for your video I was starting to contemplating just giving up on life but my kids have kept me going, but you gave me hope. I’ve alway been an organ donor since I got my drivers license at 18.

Hey Stephen so happy your here. I donated to my wife 10 years ago. Its cool as hell to see a recipient doing jui jitsu. She had to be on home dialysis for 3 years. I was home from work as a cna when the hospital saying hey we got a cadaver kidney. I grabbed her suit case and we had to wait for her machine to stop. Now my kidney is at 90 % i dont regret it. I have to watch my blood pressure big time. Jui jitsu has helped my blood pressure. Oh my awesome wife is still here. Good luck to you.

I survived a bout with cancer in 2013, and a lot of your recovery journey is very parallel to my experience - going from being fit to being unable to walk 2 blocks, and the long long journey of slow recovery and "will I ever be ok again?"

Thanks for sharing. I just had a kidney taken out and am thankful to be feeling great. I'm a purple belt in Jiu Jitsu and love the art but change is the way. I want to stay on the mats but don't want to risk the one good kidney I have. Not sure how I'll adapt to keep going but I'll try. No hard throws and wrestling take downs. I had hoped to continue on with touch sparring/kick boxing style with pads and only trusted partners I can trust will respect my health.

    Testicular cancer survivor here.
Thanks for your story. I started bjj 6 month after the removal of a tumor near the kidney but had to stop because it hurt a lot when rolling.
    Any tips?

Hey Stephan. I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm here as a 22-year-old trying to return to BJJ after my kidney transplant (12/06/22). I was on dialysis beforehand for about a year and a half. I appreciate that I can find a video that speaks to my exact experience. I'm curious though: my doctor advised against Jiu-Jitsu, although it was just over the phone. So I'm going in for a lab and checkup in about a month and plan to ask more about Jiu-Jitsu. Do you have any recommendations for getting into it again?
Side note: I also get sick less often. In fact, I haven't gotten sick once since the transplant.
Side note 2: 54:40 I've told people the exact same thing. It's amazing and so unbelievably fortunate for me that I was born in the US. It's also a blessing to me that I was born with such a hard-working dad who did well for himself. I've been on my parent's insurance for the entire process. If I were born in any time or any other place I would have died at 20. Weird to think about.

Part of the problem is that most doctors have no idea what “jiu-jitsu” is. They hear the term and think flying sidekicks or MMA fighting. So it may take some education and contextualization.
I would modify your practice though. Sadly I think the impact from takedowns is extremely risky, so I would avoid those. And I would avoid training with uncontrolled spazzy people (so, most 20 year olds). You can roll, but slower, more controlled rolls would be much safer than going full bore.
      And congratulations on being alive!!!

@@StephanKesting Thank you! And yeah, I didn't explain what Jiu-Jitsu actually is to my nephrologist so I'll make sure to explain in person. It sucks that I have to take extra precautions with these kinds of things but I'm grateful that this is the current nuisance I'm dealing with and not dialysis/finding a kidney anymore. Again, thanks for the advice.

    Hi how are you
I had a kidney transplant 15 years ago and I really like my new kidney
I am a swimmer, I have 2 gold medals, and I do body weight training
I like to try martial arts
A sport that I get a medal or a degree and effective for self-defense
    I saw most martial arts
They all hit the abdomen and pelvis
Which martial art do you think I should try?
    Is BJj suitable and safe?

My dr told me to be careful of any falls or something hitting my transplant. Do you tell your grappling partners no knee on belly or slams that land on your stomach. I’m curious because I’m extremely overweight. Wasn’t alway. I want to exercise but nothing I know will keep my attention as jiu jitsu. I’m just worried about damaging my kidney.
