How Many WATTS Your Gaming PC Need | PSU POWER Calculations

  • How much power does your system consume and how many Watts of PSU do you actually need to run it? Many PC users are still unaware of the fact that the power consumption numbers they see on their watt-meters do not tell the entire story.

    I know this video will not be getting that many views because majority of the viewer will find this topic boring. But you know what? I really don't care, because I believe in doing what you really love and what you are extremely passionate for. I guess that's the different thing about me, that I listen to my heart, not the sponsors :P

    350-400w. Even on stress testing both CPU and GPU it won't exceed 450w. I consider 650w for most mid range builds like this. For ~280w TDP GPU & ~125-150w TDP CPU plus mobo power draw. 650w is enough but 750w is safer. Now I'll watch your video and see what you've described here.

    • @GuyThatDoesEverything
      @GuyThatDoesEverything  Год назад +1

      I already mentioned in the video that Current Probe converts current (A) readings to volts (V) so the voltage values you see on the oscilloscope are technically current readings. Only in the quite expensive oscilloscope you get the option to change such symbols (like V to A), but it doesn't have any affect on the output readings.

    Awesome video bro!
    Long post alert
    By coincidence today I tested my psu's molex/sata connector bundle as I was noticing for the last few months that my dvd drives stopped reading dvds but read cds fine , and later my main hard drive wouldn't boot. Booting onto my other win xp dual boot drive I found the main was working but very slowly. In each situation changing to the other stalk of connectors fixed the problem. But soon the dvd problem returned. Its a matter of time the hard drive issue returns as well.
    Anyways I thought if the voltage wasn't being supplied but it was fine on the multi-meter so I loaded 12v and 5v rails with a 20watt 12v car blinker bulb.
    The 5v dropped to 3.6-3.8 volt while pulling only 0.76amp, a phone charger for comparison dropped to 4.8 giving 1amp.
    The 12v dropped to 10.5v at 1.4amp
    My dvd drive pulls 2amp on the 5volt rail mentioned on sticker, no wonder it wouldn't work, the laser assembly and circuitry works on 5v only the motors are on 12v.
    But this should have caused a pc crash but its a dual rail psu. one for the atx 24pin other rail for the accessory outputs like molex/sata.
    So can this issue be simply remedied by a capacitor replacement of the affected voltage rails?
    The psu is a 12 years old coolermaster 460.

    • @GuyThatDoesEverything
      @GuyThatDoesEverything  Год назад

      That's indeed some very long post :P
      Your PSU is way too old and is based on much older Group Regulated design hence why it's causing all this voltage drop and extremely poor level of voltage regulation. And there is no point in replacing the capacitors in such an old PSU.

    • @m.wajihuddinkhan1857
      @m.wajihuddinkhan1857 Год назад

      @@GuyThatDoesEverything Thanks for the reply, I just got carried away typing.
      Well the thing is that spare caps are cheap, replacing them is free (i have experience) while a new or used psu costs a lot more.

    • @GuyThatDoesEverything
      @GuyThatDoesEverything  Год назад

      @@m.wajihuddinkhan1857 Replacing caps are cheap because you aren't going to get good caps here (most of them are quite old or just copy of original ones). How are you going to test each individual cap for their specifications? And how would you know which exact cap to replace? It's better to just get a good brand PSU instead or buy a used PSU, simple. PSU that hardly costs around 1.5K-2K doesn't quite worth such hassles.

    • @m.wajihuddinkhan1857
      @m.wajihuddinkhan1857 Год назад

      @@GuyThatDoesEverything well if thats the case then I was already looking for a very cheap psu to use as a bench supply, this supply will take that place and my pc shall get a new one. Thats the most sensible solution I can think of.
      coming to the fact that how i would test the specs. the sticker says it all, if they lie then capacitance can be verified by RC=t method, a common experiment that they teach in second year physics. I have done it before and its worked flawlessly. Leakage currents is just charging it and seeing how quickly it discharges by its own using a digital multi-meter which is almost ideal.
      esr it a bit tricky for a simple guy like me. I am just gonna yolo it.
      Knowing which one to replace is a game of tracing wires and checking which voltage is rectified by which cap after assessing it visually for obvious problems.
      I have previously replaced my lcd monitor's psu circuit caps after they leaked 2 years ago sourcing them from daraz and an old dead laptop charger.
