- Customer lifted the entire lid of this septic system. There was so much scum and sludge that the wastewater was unable to exit the tank and enter the drainfield. I was able to pump out all of the waste and leave the system completely empty.

50 years with that small tank? Thats impressive.
Think about what you just saw folks. 50 years with a tiny, single chamber tank and no pumping. Just proves that with proper bacteria breaking down solids they don't need constant pumping. Obviously no wet wipes, garbage disposal or enough toilet bowl cleaner to kill bacteria so it stayed healthy. My old farm house has a beautifully made poured in place septic tank that was seldom pumped and still works perfectly. The owner dated with his finger 9-1923 on the arched top. I found the 2 lids, had it pumped, then power washed it using a sump pump to get the water out. About 5 X 11 with cement divider to top and 2 round lids. Once cleaned I went inside both chambers to replace old rusty cast iron pipe with 4" PVC. It does have a 4" cast pipe that sticks 2 foot above ground with cast iron cap going into first tank. Keep in mind here in mid Michigan most farms only had outhouses until late 50's, early 60's. I remember the outhouse well and I was born in '55.
@@jefffrayer8238 how would a garbage disposal kill bacteria in the septic tank? the bacteria would love whatever goes down the garbage disposal.
@@dnkmmr69420 Because some people dump a bunch of garbage down their disposal which increases the work load of the septic system. Chopped up carrots are not going to break down as easy as poop which septic tank was designed for. City sewer, it probably doesn't matter but at 70 I have never had a need for a garbage disposal and never had a septic tank issue. You could be right if done in moderation but many tanks were not sized to also handle food desposal and if not pumped more often could be overloaded with sludge. I think most tanks of the 60's-70's were sized for a family of 4 and no disposal.
Now I finally learn where politicians are born from . Thanks for showing this secret.

My grandpa built my grandparents house and septic tank. The tank was the size of a local city hospital in 1952. The house was sold in 2020 after my grandmother passed.
The septic tank had never been pumped. The truck came out and pulled out 2800 gallons of sludge. From 1952 to 2020 and the tank was not even 1/4 full 😂 Most vile thing I think I’ve ever had to witness

Dang where even is the capacity or system or land area you at... plus if it was in his late years or just was odlscool for his age even then may have been under the mindset it does not have a way TO do so by way of lack of any openings rather a sealed if not actually merely a cesspool thus no way to pump so to speak out the contents into the "honeytruck" XD still kinda humorous in my opinion way to refer to a sewerage pump automobile thus making it the longer term s9lution of using a larger size for increased longevity. Dad built out septic 1960. Nothing done, zero issues till 2010. County demanded it be pumped, inspected. It pumped easy, drain field fine. Maybe 1/3 full at far end. Gravity ran it. If course we can’t have simple. +$10k system. Freezes in winter, pump issues…needs pumping every other year. It was +4x as large two main sections. It pumped out easy. I keep thinking I should rent a backhoe dig it out, rebuild it to leach field. Something that would last.
“Dad built…” You mean “My Dad?” Because there isn’t ONE dad. 🤦♂️
@@Ac22768 far as I am concerned. There is only one. There have been multiple issues with new, improved septic. Old one was gravity. Never froze, pump never failed, did not need pumping…

You would have to be compensated well to do this gig. I did a stint as an apprentice plumber and all we did was clean out pipes. The worst was a gig where an entire trailer park was blocked because of tampons and maxi pads. The journeyman opened the cleanout and it all came out. Journeyman puked. I gagged but held it in and got somewhat out of range. Thankfully the landscaping around the cleanout was a dish to catch all the turds or it would have made it to the road. We didn't have to clean it up. We got the hell out of there once the clog was solved. As the old acronym goes. YSOBB!

On my channel there are videos of an old house that sat empty for 20+ years that I renovated to be my office. The septic system was still intact. I later found out it was installed in the mid-60's. No idea when it was last pumped so I had it pumped. 900 gal tank. Had a few inches on the bottom but that was it. I was surprised because I can't imagine it had been pumped in the last years before the house went empty. Though it would look like this.
Systems shouldn't have to be pumped if bacteria is working correctly

Actually a properly functioning tank, even with a huge crust, really doesn't smell that bad, it has more of a musty smell, not like poo. I had a septic at my last house, and the only time it got bad was when I'd done major cleaning and dumped too much bleach water down the drains. Took it 3 months to recover.

In another comment you had mentioned that the drainfield was backed up, with that and how small and shallow that septic tank is is this one of those times where you would strongly suggest them to get an upgrade?
Im sickened but cant look away

Many decades ago I was at a friend’s house, and they were having their septic tank pumped. I was very curious about how it worked, so I had a look. I looked into the tank and saw… kittens. I looked up at my friend and his dad in horror. They just shrugged and smiled. I jumped on my bike and never came back. I still see those kittens. That was over 50 years ago…
All my houses except the first have had septic systems. I have my current system pumped every year because I like to monitor its "health". I have always heard that it's easy to corrupt the drain field if the tank is not pumped regularly. So how is it that a tank that hasn't been pumped for 50 years or even 5 still has a functioning drain field? WTF?
You are wasting your money pumping every year. As shown here a good designed system that just has poop, septic safe T.P. and proper use of bowl cleaner can easily go 10 years before pumping.
Ur getting ripped off
@@randomhiphop5055 no, I choose to do this because I understand septic systems and the expense associated with major service of the tank or the drain field. I could measure the scum and poop layers but that doesn't seem like fun. I have also experienced backups because of a saturated drain field. After an $8k repair, I pay closer attention.
@@jefffrayer8238 you mentioned several ambiguous variables. How do you know that the tp you use is septic safe? And what is proper use of toilet cleaner? And how do you know if the system is properly designed and sized for the number of people using it? All of these are unknowable by the homeowner. Better to pump annually and have a check up.
Wow, calm down witzed. Septic systems properly sized and properly used have gone decades without being pumped and the whole system is just fine. Just watch the vids and ask those that have been cleaning for decades. You just saw a video of a tank that hasn't been pumped for 50 years and was still working. That owner, myself at 4 different homes and gobs of people seldom pump and don't get hit with $8,000 repairs. Perhaps you're system was a poor design, misused or you got scammed. Have at it, pump every year or 6 months for all I care.
