    I've been addicted since childhood, it is a dangerous obsession, i eat in excess every day particularly crave foods high in sugar and carbs, can't get enough, i get crazy cravings and it is the fastest way to get a dose of happiness. I fear i won't live long. I appreciate Dr Vera Tarman for bringing this to the public's attention as only recently physicians are starting to recognise this as a real addiction.

    Hi, I am carb addicted. I was pre-diabetic, uncontrolled hypertension, sleep apnea, reduced kidney function, etc. I have managed to get myself to OMAD and lose 40 lbs and maintain my weight over the last year. In my experience, it has been easier to restrict my eating to shorter windows. I look forward those windows and use black coffee as a bridge. There will be relapses. Don't stop trying. It will save your life.

    I gave up smoking .. I was doing two packs a day for 10 plus years .. I quit cold Turkey .. I started referring to myself as a non smoker .. I am a non smoker .. instead of I’m trying to quit .. the same thing with my keto … after I was diagnosed with diabetes … I don’t eat carbs .. that’s it … I don’t eat carbs … I’m not trying to cut back .. im not eating treats or allowing myself cheat days … I do NOT eat carbs …( other than leafy greens and other low carb veg😉)

    Dr Rob Cywes has said food addiction is like drink addiction. The addictive ingredient in food is carbs, just like drinkers are addicted to the alcohol content.
    That is the most valuable advice I've ever heard regarding compulsive eating. It's the carbs.

    The worst part about food addiction is that it is 100% socially acceptable. They have TV channels, and national holidays dedicated to nothing but food! To eat this way you have to be an outsider. They may all be sheep, but we’re the black sheep.

    Very interesting and I love how she discusses so many different aspects of food addiction, and the type of markers which signal that you are probably an addict. I'm still not too sure where the line is drawn between eating for comfort and being an actual addict. Seems like most foods you enjoy you would be somewhat addicted to, right? I follow a very low carb diet and enjoy dark chocolate everyday (usually 80% coco). I normally eat less than the serving size each day, so I don't think it's an addiction- but could it be? I align with some of the markers she pointed out but not all of them. For instance . . . I would be upset if I couldn't have something at least a little sweet everyday, but its very mild (such as the no sugar sweetener I use in my coffee, which I understand is still not very healthy- but limit myself to one cup using this). I have these things in my diet because the thought of having absolutely nothing sweet just doesn't satisfy me. I'm cool using the better brands and sweeteners- such as allulose- but I'm not okay removing them altogether. It's a bit unclear whether these are addictions or just preferences and avoiding a general feeling of dissatisfaction. I mean you'd need to be willing to completely stop everything except for meat and vegetables and wholefoods- to never have anything sweet and NO TREATS. Could not wanting to draw the line here be an addiction or just general preference for lifestyle and such? If the former were true, then pretty much everyone is an addict.
    It’s good information for someone who truly does struggle with food addiction and it’s interfering with their ability to function normally- I’m not sure how relevant it is to people who just ‘struggle’ on the level that most do. If you have addictive tendencies, then I’d say following the advice she lays out to try and curb those tendencies as much as possible is probably the best thing.

    I realized that starchy foods could easily be addictive for me. Sugary foods are way down on my personal risk scale. Crunchy salty starches are the most dangerous, so I just don't buy them. I portion control when preparing meals. Even plain cold pasta straight from the fridge can be a trap. I've learned to balance my starch intake with fats and proteins, and eat much less starch than most people that I know.

    This is very interesting. I'd discarded the idea of food addiction because this fitness community such as dr. Schoenfeld and nutritionist Aragon have scoffed at the idea. But I can see how diabetes can be the sign of an addiction to sugar.
    One of the hallmarks of an addiction is a degradation to the quality of life of the addict, and I'm personally seeing how my diabetic father refuses to avoid a diet mainly consisting of cookies, bread, and rice despite facing the imminent possibility of having his foot/toes amputated.
    I know because Ive been telling him to change his diet for years and when faced with this recent foot infection, wrote him up a diet plan with which he wasn't too enthusiastic.
    What more evidence do we need to see food as a potential source of addiction, if not the insistence of continuing habits leading to the point of risking amputation? Is that not a defining feature of addiction, the refusal to change a habit that the addict knows leads to loss of quality of life?

      Your judging all type 2 diabetics as sugar addicted? I guess you didn't hear the good doctor explain that not all over weight or obese people are food addicted. And how would you feel if you were told by your doctors that type 2 diabetes is not curable & only progressive, so you had no hope of reversing it, had to take horrible drugs for type 2 snd then your told by your relative NO MORE COOKIES for you!!! Just stop eating sugar, Dad, it's simple! 🤮

    • @DMWB57
      @DMWB57 Год назад

      And to top it off, everywhere you go has sugar & processed carbs IN YOUR FACE. Not so easy. And it's judgement & arrogance that has possibly made him a little more resistant to doing what is more healthy for him.

    • @DMWB57
      @DMWB57 Год назад +1

      It is many decades of processed carbs & sugar, and aging that probably pushed your Dad into type 2 diabetes so showing empathy & compassion for how hard this metabolic condition is to change, but might allow for his pride to be set aside.
      Don't forget that in your Dad's generation none of this was known about sugar & processed carbs, seed oils, etc. He was likely told all the wrong things to lose weight, the wrong messaging!! That same thing happened to me, which caused more metabolic damage to occur OVER TIME.

    • @boxerfencer
      @boxerfencer Год назад

      @@DMWB57as I recall, when he was pre diabetic in his 30s and 40s, he knew full well he should avoid sweets as his mom mom had been diabetic, only he didn't because he had a sweet tooth, and because he had a voracious appetite. He used to have four course lunches everyday for decades just because he could afford it, despite developing sleep apnea, in addition to being prediabetic back then. These were well rounded meals, at least, if not a daily decadent exercise in self indulgence.
      And no, he didn't have sugar pushed on him. He's always eaten at home and had his wife cook his meals, so there's no hidden sugars there.
      If there's any arrogance, it's on his part, that he could eat the way he did for decades, and worsen his diet in terms of macronutrient composition in recent years, without repercussions.
      If he's the victim of something, it's the generational mentality that science will find some solution in the form of a pill that'll cure his diabetes, but also allow him to continue his lifestyle, that involves him sitting in his office everyday watching tv all day long, while eating entire packages of cookies as a mid-afternoon snack. That's hubris.

    I don't hear acknowledgement of metabolic adaptation; switching to using fat as an energy source. This can take months, even years for ppl to become adapted. Also, the psych authorities do differentiate between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse. It's the same for carbs and dairy... it's a matter of degree. Humans aren't meant to have more than 1 teaspoon of glucose in their blood at any given time. This means all ppl who are using a grain based diet are "food abusing & _ or food addicted " - collectively this is not recognized by most..... I've seen many over weight ppl that truly don't eat a lot, they are over weight due to hormones and constantly using carbs as their energy source.... their fat tissue is locked down

    When you say Diabetes do you mean Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes? It would be really helpful if you could be clear about the difference between the two because there is a lot of confusion out here in the real world.

    • @francisvlatko2834
      @francisvlatko2834 2 года назад +1

      You have no choice to be a Type 1 Diabetic. It's your pancreas failing to produce insulin. Eating carbohydrates can be life threatening if you don't medicate with insulin.
      You choose (knowingly or unknowingly) to be a Type 2 Diabetic because it's a disease of prolonged carbohydrate toxicity in your bloodstream. You need to overeat carbohydrates for a very long period before your body becomes insulin resistant. Hence you can choose to not have Type 2 Diabetes by eliminating carbohydrates from your diet and let your body recover and become insulin sensitive again.
      Carbohydrate addiction leads to Type 2.

    • @DMWB57
      @DMWB57 Год назад

      @@francisvlatko2834I get your point, however, you think Type 2's choose to be diabetic? I think that's an over simplification. We never chose to be lied to for decades about the food pyramid & poisoned by food manufacturing companies that literally added high fructose corn syrup in everything or canola oil or pesticides in our grains. I could go one and on!!!! There was a lot going on the past 40 yrs to make people insulin resistant & diabetic.
      I think it's wrong to put all the blame on type 2 diabetics for causing it! That's like blaming people with cancer as the cause of their disease. Some people can eat crappy their whole lives and not get type 2, and instead they get cancer, yet you would never blame that person for their cancer would you???
      I despise shaming tactics or whatever your comment was intended to do.

    I think it would have been more interested by starting the conversation by giving a clear definition of food addiction with examples because it's confusing.
    They talked about milk, cheese, grain and food in general, addiction... That's where I got confused. People addicted to alcohol, smoking, drugs must stop taking it. That's the only solution. Should those people completely stop drinking milk, cheese, grains, food... A lot is missing in this conversation. And if it's just about reducing the amount and changing the content of food then is it really food addiction....

      It is not black or white. Addiction is a disease of progression. Food, alcohol, drugs, sex - they are all categories of addiction. Do you know how many choices you can make within those categories?
      An alcoholic can be someone who only drinks wine, someone who just binge drinks the whole weekend away or someone who is intoxicated 24/7. Addiction is a very complicated area of psychology. The only common thread is the lack of control.

      @@petermadany2779, I mean getting hooked on (high calorie) almond and coconut flour cakes, breads, cookies, and such. So yes, processed but seemingly OK because you can make them at home (or purchase them) and they are not made with wheat flour and such. They are easy to over do.

      @@denisearonow4921 Indeed. For me sticking to real, unprocessed food (and avoiding starch and any kind of sweeteners) means calories are almost immaterial. Perhaps having zero snacks in an average week is also required to allow me to ignore calories while maintaining an ideal weight.

    It’s more academic discussion and it’s so interesting. But Practical application is definitely deferent animal.

    Even eliminating all processed refined foods - all the things that won't work on keto, I stiill find myself obsessing over food. E.g. - how can I get more flavor, or sweet taste without sugar (only to hear that even no calorie sweeteners can cause an insulin reaction like that of sugar; how can I eat enough to feel full; how can I feel satisfied without the flavors that I crave, etc.etc. Thank you for this. I haven't been lying when I've told people that I'm and addict with food as my drug of choice!

    Cold turkey is great if you don’t have friends. Lol. My problem is friends. Those who come over and bring treats because they want to nibble all evening. I’m fine on my own but I don’t want to live a hermits life. We have a busy family and my kids are older teens and young adults so they do their own thing and that’s easy. But friends...

      @Tracy Cruz, I know there are lots of strategies around friends and family but I have mastered none of them and find this among my greatest challenges.

    Interesting discussion very informative. By this definition any liking is an addiction. Maybe it is. We are living with our habits. I am going with food habits. And separate them to bad and good with adding FOR You. It’s good academic discussion but practical application can be weakens by labeling it addiction.

      Did you hear when the alternate name for food addiction could be dopamine resistance? That may help people who don't like the term addiction.

      She clearly defined where the boundary is to an addiction. The issue can start as a like and turn to addiction.

    Sugar is not addictive? Really? Then drink coffee and ice cream with no SUGAR. Try to eat cake with no sugar. Try to eat Oreo with no sugar added in it. Try to eat cup cake with no sugar added. Donuts with no sugar. Coke with no sugar or no sweet flavor in it.

    When I quit smoking I transferred to sunflower seeds which now I realize was the habit of hand to mouth which now is my tendency to over eat food and desire to snack all the time. Ugh!

    In April 2021 I was in hospital having had a heart attack… I also found out I was an ‘undiagnosed diabetic’, so cutting a long story short I gave up smoking straight away, and went on a diet to control my diabetes via weight loss and exercise (on an 800 calories a day low fat diet and daily exercise), and got off the Metformin 6 months later… My blood sugar was under control…average 5.0mmol/ml and I had lost 3 stone in weight.
    I found out about the Keto diet and decided to try it…however, I always struggled to get into Ketosis and only ever managed to get into Ketosis mildly no matter how hard I tried…even when fasting for 36 hrs…!!! I was not low carb…I was NO CARB…
    However, I seem to have a problem now…I’ve found a way of keeping my blood sugar low, but on a high fat diet I have put on weight…and have not stopped…who does not like a big juicy no carb steak…right…!! So now most of my weight loss has piled back on, but as I’m still almost no carb, my blood sugar is fine…still in the 5’s…but I think I’m now addicted to no carb tasty food and I’m eating too much…. Help…!!!!

      Q: Are you eating nuts and a lot of fat? I have heard of people gaining weight gain when they overdo the nuts and fat. If you eat too much fat then the body is going to use that first before burning body fat.

      I think eating a lot of cheese can cause weight gain too.
