Cheers. I can't record in the wind as the gear blows over. I have had many a round up there where I got blown off the course and was well over handicap. For what ever reason the short irons were going close. You get that a couple of times a year. Once you drop in the valley you have to use your head. It took me quite a few rounds and lost balls to figure that out. It's a favourite place to visit, well stocked pro shop at slightly cheaper prices than normal too.
That is a lovely course but needs some wind to defend it (sounds familiar!!!). Well played!!! Great golf on a fairly testing course - some of those greens look slightly quick if you get on the wrong side of the hole!!! Nice to see that your short irons were hot!!! As you say "A wonderful day out!!!"
Neville, I did not know what was happening. Obviously I picked a day without the 3 clubs of wind in your face down the first 3 holes. The back 9 you just need to make good decisions and then hit it straight. But those short irons dropping close meant I shot level instead of 4 over. Add the wind and I'm 7 or 8 over in a heartbeat. I've just edited my next day out on a course only 2 and half miles along the escarpment. Built in 1889 and completely different in character. I've got 1 day out left and I'm watching the weather like a hawk!
@@thehairygolfer I hope that you pick your weather wisely!!! I can see why it becomes so difficult when the wind blows. It's tough and narrow, and the golfer has to determine and find where to hit the ball, where are the safe places to miss the drive etc., etc. ..! Good smuggling area when the weathers bad like in the driving!
The birdies were unexpected. 3 of them anyway. Without the wind I would hope to be 4 over. On a windy day it kills me. But as you know, can't risk the camera being blown over even in a cage. I picked my day well!
@@thehairygolfer Yeah looked like a perfect day for golf. How many 🪶 s did you plant last time you were out there? I haven't had my cam blow over yet and I played several rounds with gusty winds. I have ran my camera over before though 🤣.
Some solid stuff and some lucky stuff. And of course I get to play when the wind doesn't blow. That's to my benefit, can't film when it can blow the gear over. Thanks
Chipping has always been my strong suit. It is a great course for the money. My next away day is only 2 and a half miles along the ridgeline and is also great value.
Fantastic course. My favourite in the area. It just seems to have a bit of everything and the back 9 is brilliant. You shot a superb score and made the course look much wider than it is.
Not to mention the lack of a 3 club wind in your face on 1, 2, 3, and 5. I have to pick windless days or it blows the gear over and breaks something and ruins the sound. I can't do that normally. Maybe a birdie or two on the par 5's but more bogies. For £700 I could end up there when I retire.
@@thehairygolfer if I were closer, I would join this club. Although I learnt the game of golf at Thornbury, it was certainly Cotswold edge which forced me to use my brain more off the tee and to work harder at curing my awful slice for the first tee. Talking of Thornbury I hope Thornbury gets some green fee deals going again, I've not played there is pre lockdown, and I'm starting to miss that course when I drive past it to see family. Are there any courses you really want to play again but for various reasons can't?
It is a fun course Brian. I love shorter holes that make you think a bit. You could try driver on some of them in the valley but it will end in tears. Don't ask me how I know! 😂
This looks like one of those courses where you can hit a good score if you plot your way round (and the weather’s calm), or get really punished if you try to overpower it. Great value for £700.
Neil, it's blowing here today. There would be no good scoring for me up there. I do shoot my handicap from time to time in the wind but mostly not. The back 9 is short and out of the wind which helps but I wouldn't want to test myself for the camera today! For £700 it could be my retirement course.
Nice looking course. Looks like you're hitting the ball very well. I'm sure you did a video about what balls you use for winter golf, am I correct? What's your view?
It is a very nice course with great views. The greens are a good speed without being outragous. Bunkers are good. The bottom 9 can get wet in the winter and sometimes close. You go down 10 and back up 18 but they have been doing a lot of drainage work this summer. Winter balls I use all of the premium balls I find in the rough that are not my usual brand. I might do something when the temp drops really low, a short one, thanks for the idea. I need to find some Ladies balls in the rough for that. A nice low compression.
Thanks to a hot wedge and some luck I shot level par. Plus I've got to play when it's not windy or it blows the gear over. It can get brutal up there when the wind blows.
Ground was still firm Berry and the wind was missing. Usually you go up there and you get 3 clubs in your face down 1, 2 and 3. Then the par 3 at full length is a driver. It can play very difficult and for whatever reason the short irons were dropping so close. I wish they would do that every day! For 700 notes that could be my retirement course. It's only 5 minutes further away than Lilleybrook.
@@thehairygolfer Definately a retirement course 10 mph wind and below accepted you have the game . Would a high handicapper struggle on this course as it has some difficult holes ?
@@Berry-fr5wj Everybody struggles when it blows. The front is wide enough to play. Get round the front to your handicap or 1 over and if you can be sensible down in the valley you can do okay. It doesn't blow 3 clubs all the time obviously - only when I go there to play a match away from home!!! I remember a society day there and the drive was going only 200! As was younger then too. But if money is short in a few years it could well be a retirement course. The membership is far from full and it's nice and quiet most of the time. That is so appealing. Lilleybrook has so many retired members it's hard to find a tee time at any time of day in the summer. I've been panicing for lack of video opportunities. I might even play away some days this winter.
Best advice is choose a day when the wind is below 10mph. It's quite hard with 3 clubs of wind in your face. I wont do these courses on windy days as it blows the gear over and I don't want anything expensive broken. Plus it ruins the sound. 1 club of wind is my max. Go up there on a sunny day and little wind and you will enjoy it.
@@thehairygolfer If ever I start a golfing channel I'd us my drone for certain shots coming into the green, shots of about 120 yards, would make a good angle I think.
So have I when it blows! Not to mention before I worked out how to play the back 9. Some very very painful memories down there over the years. The great thing about having a camera is if it's blowing I don't record because it blows the gear over and that can be expensive. Sunny golfer - that's me!
G’Day Simon What a nice golf course with great views and you have use the 15th club Membership fee is very reasonable and well with the average golfers budget so it ticks all the boxes And also by the way well played 👍🏻👍🏻🏌🏻♀️🇦🇺
I wouldn't want to be up there today Robert. It's blowing well even down here in the valley. It would be impossible to shoot a score up there today. It is very well priced, has a small membership and is easy to get on. You never know I might be a member there when I fianlly retire.
It's not often i have a day when short irons go close. Very welcome when it happens.
Great golf Simon. Ron
It was that day Ron. But you know the light doesn't shine on us for very long.
How good is it to view a golfer, play a course which you know well, especially their tactics employed. Just love the last eight holes.
