Ballard GOLD Mower Blades! An HONEST Review & Field Test

  • Today, we're reviewing the Ballard Gold Blades offered by Ballard Inc. and sharing how they perform in the field. Lawn mower blades, in general, are a touchy subject because every single lawn mower, turf type, soil condition, and operator use are different! What might be great for us up north could be entirely different from someone down south, and so on.
    The overall grade I'd give these on our lawn was a solid B+. It cut 6" of weekly growth and field grass, which was comprised mostly of Kentucky Blue, Rye, and some clover ground cover. I think the stripes it left speak for themselves.
    Love to hear what you guys think about the Ballard Gold Blades! Do you like them? Hate them? Let us know in the comments below. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated with how we like them too as we continue to use them more.

    Thanks for the honest review. Remember we have 5 blade varieties that all perform a little different. Turf type, turf height, cutting height, mowing speed, wet / dry, season and of course mower brand and deck design all play a factor in optimal performance. If anyone wants to see our blade choices and chart just jump on our website. The simple search by mower feature makes it easy. Keep grinding & stay safe out there!

    Got them. Used them. Took them off. I'd say they're okay but don't have much suction lift or discharge distance

    • @laurapalmerTDGE
      @laurapalmerTDGE Месяц назад +1

      The suction power is now also one of the important points personally, partly due to and mainly due to the blades. I use a completely different type of mower myself, a Honda PRO HRD536 that literally sucks up all the debris and grass in its path. Such as maple seeds, etc. And partly due to the standard knives, the aftermarket knives are not always better, so I stick to what is efficient and does its job smoothly.
      Have fun mowing!

    ive never used the gold blades but have been using ballard blades because of one of your videos years back i will say while i can't say they cut many times better than other blades but i will say, whatever steel compound they use they do hold an edge for much longer than many other blades I've tried so more time between sharpening is always a plus

    I get a nice cut out of a cheap set of Oregon blades. However if you smoke a rock they'll bend right up. What would make me a believer is if you can hit sticks or the occasional small rocks and keep an edge, or if they'll keep an edge for 2 or more weeks in the heavy mowing season.

    I like Ballard blades and have ran them exclusively on my Scag and Ferris but the gold hybrid blades do not work on my Exmark X-series. Discharge wasn't clean nor was the cut. The OEM notched high lift does a much better job. I'll probably just use the golds during leaf season.

    I’m trying the same high lift style you had on your radius. I find that the grass clumps more when it’s wet or lush. Seems like it packs it in the deck more and launches wads of grass out. All blades are made to do a job and ALL will be punished. Grass types, mower performance and so many other factors come into play as to how long they last, how well they perform etc. Give them a try for a decent amount of time before making a conclusion about them. I know technology is ALWAYS advancing and surely the extra coatings and materials used will be far better than a standard plane metal blade. Thanks Brian for always keeping it real :-)

  • @ANTHONYBirdsall
    @ANTHONYBirdsall Месяц назад

    I have roughly 12 sets of these for my grandstands and turf tracers. Seems the stripping is better. Lots of blow out on grandstand when used with vac bagger. Great on turf tracers. Hold edge long time. But they bend easy. I cut 3.75"-4" on regular saginaw michigan. You bump a tree root... blades bent. Edge is solid but the blade is junk, whereas oem blades that tree roots gonna wreck thr edge blades fine. This is a problem I've seen with every ballard blade. They bend easier than the oem blades. But they hold their edge longer. Just my 2 cents on 19 acres, 3 acres, 2 acres, 40 residentials, 5 small commercials.weekly.

  • @TheLawnFellas
    @TheLawnFellas Месяц назад

    I bought them for my TimeMaster and was disappointed but also understand that the TimeMaster is the residential mower. So bought them for my Snapper walk behind mower and love the cut they leave. One thing to think about is the extremely high lifts may cause you to use more gas because it restricts the wind more under the deck so gotta really use all the horsepower to spin them.
