  • This is my September 24 - 25th summit of Utah's highest point - King's Peak in the High Uintas Wilderness. This was around 28 miles and 4500' of total elevation gain. I made this into a two day overnight.

Congratulations on summiting... My brother and I did this back in 2006 and we dropped over Gunsight to camp... we did the same as you... Woke up, bagged the summit and bailed...i think we were about 26 hours car to car... That first day we stopped to rest on top of Gunsight and here comes two day hikers down off the summit, they go on to say they left the trail head at 4 AM... they were really hoping to make it back into treeline before dark as the trail is delineated well and not as easy to lose it...
I must say the contrast that you were blessed with to enjoy in that upper basin with the snow peppered peaks amoungst the rest of the beautiful scenery is probably the best of the best... It simply doesn't get any better than that... So congratulations on the timing on that too...
In 2016 I soloed the Highline via Hayden Pass to Fox lake, and instead of heading over North Pole Pass to Chepeta I left trail 025 and headed over to the north slope and Island Lake to finish up via the Spirit Lake Lodge trail... Planned on 10 days and finished in nine.. I think it was about 67-70 miles roughly... Spirt sits a little bit further east than Chepeta and adds miles that you tack on by heading north...
... the trail on the North slope was infinitely harder to follow than trail 025... the hardest part for me on following the Highline was sections below Red Knob Pass and the turn off for Owyhee Basin, but yeah the north slope is alot less traveled....
... My pack was 43 pounds which included a stainless steel Taurus 44 magnum Tracker with a five shot cylinder... I carried only 4 305 grain Buffalo Bore rounds chambered so as to give myself an added safety and spare myself carrying one more cartridge 70 miles ...lol... Plus sat phone, plus gear... plus more gear... lol... Yeah good times....
... I forgot to mention just after leaving the the Yellowstone drainage and on my way up into Owyhee basin as I was sitting by a spring getting water here comes an ultra runner coming up from the Yellowstone trail head for a day run... lol... I'll tell you it's kinda surreal seeing people that far in with basically nothing but two waterbottles strapped in hands and a small fanny pack... he was kind enough to stop his training and talk awhile... Come to find out his name is Davey Crockett lol... Yes that's his real name and evidently he is a very well seasoned and accomplished ultra marathoner in the backcountry... He has website that is very interesting, even some history behind ultra running... Anyway he last I seen ran the 70 miles of the Highline in about 30 hours... Impressive stuff... It's not much different to me than folks that free solo big walls... Anyway Davey had a journal on his website on in his August entry you can read about his coming upon me and chatting... Pretty neat stuff....anyway...
... Enjoy what you can while you can, because we aren't granted tomorrow, and if and when tomorrow comes as the years pass it becomes harder and harder to get out there and push it.
I hope you can punch through my poor syntax and grammatical errors... Sorry about that... It's hard writing a novela on this stupid little phone....lol
Thanks for sharing n' God bless brother

THis hike is stunning. I have done it twice. Folks saying any part of that trail is boring must be boring people because every inch is incredible.

One of the prettiest places I’ve been ! Love the Uintas …. Did the Highline last Summer. I got so much beautiful footage that my edit had to be a multi-part episodes.
    Enjoyed the edit.

If someone wanted to do this in a day, how much time would it take (car to car) in your opinion?
