Backpacking Utah's High Uintas Wilderness : The Red Castle SNEAK Loop

- 3 Day Loop around Red Castle using the unnamed pass above upper red castle lake. Other star locations was hiking along the Highline Trail or High Line, whichever way it's typed, Porcupine Pass, Smith Fork Pass and a few basins in the High Uintas.
Day 1: China Meadows to Red Castle Lake
Day 2: Red Castle Lake to the valley West of Kings Peak.
Day 3: Smith Fork Pass to China Meadows.
I have been to Red Castle many times... my first trip was 1990 There wasn't a dead tree in there.. not many people had been back there... wish you guys had seen it before all the bark beetle destruction.
It's definitely a special place. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. The trail used to be so much better... lots of rocks now. Rutted etc... But still beautiful

The Uintas are one of my favorite ranges. Haven't been there myself in a couple years. That trail up to Red Castle is great, you go up the whole time, but you barely notice the grade (until the few switchbacks). Love seeing Lacy absolutely slaying the fishing up there! Love the colors!

I have met those exact sheep dogs! They were puppies in my video. I’ve seen them since too. Amazing how many sheep are out there.
Again I find you in places I used to haunt. Red Castle was a favorite of my mom's family and I remember riding horses up there as a little kid. I only hiked it one time and that was back in about 1992 which is the last time I was there. I starkly remember the scenery though as it is quite unique. I swear my family used to live at China Meadows. There are many black and white photographs of my family up around those lakes. One of my Dad's friend claimed to see Bigfoot up on one of those ridges surrounding the upper area back in the 60's which sparked a lot of interest and controversy when his photo was published in the paper. The photo is not great but it does look like there is a being of some sort in it. Your video is great and beautifully captures the scenery.
Always enjoy your vids. It's great Lacy likes to fish but she sure is rough on them. They have slime on them that protects them from infection etc. When they're dragged across the grass and handled with dry hands the slime rubs off. Not good. Also not that many would be lost if you had the barbs bent down on the hooks or even use a single hook. THX for the effort

@@NorthwestWanderer Just need to wet your hands in the lake before touching the fish. You can crimp the barb by using some pliers to pinch it down. On a single point hook you can turn it into an octopus hook by bending the hook in ward a little more to have more holding force without the presence of a barb.

This backpacking trip gave you both a lot to smile about! Beautiful mountains and wide open spaces. Lots of beautiful landscape photographs in this video. What was your elevation and what are the fish?
Thank you. Dont know the fish my wife would know that. We wandered between 9 and 12 thousand feet.

Hey Andrew. Long time viewer here. I've been researching a good thru hike for next summer 2024 and the Uintas Highline Trail is top of the list at the moment. Love that red range of stunning peaks and wide expansive contrasting green basin after basin. Sure seems to be some crazy summer storm systems showing in pretty much every video I've checked out. When did you and Lacey do this loop? Any keepers for dinner btw?
this was early august. We didn't have anything to cook fish on this trip, but plenty of great ones. Superb range for fishing

BTW, the fish that I could see well enough were Brook trout. They certainly bite like Brook trout

Nice video sad to see sheep up that high, that’s why you can’t drink the spring waters. Should be deer and elk not domestic sheep.
