I much prefer the colours of the 5100. More dynamic range, so it really pops after colour correction.
Canon is a little bit aggressive with the contrast. I love Canon but.. Nikon win here.
@onespokesdude I have both camera,Nikon d5100 and t3i, nikon is more sharper, who made this video work for canon!!!
You can achieve the look of the Canon with the Nikon D5100 in post production.. the contrast and everything.
Seems like Canon have a small edge; but Nikon is fine as well.
no matter how many comparison videos I watch, I just can't seem to decide!
Some pointers:
1. You have to record with both cameras at the same time.
2. You have to make sure you're using the same PICTURE STYLE, not only the same settings.
3. Lenses have contrast, color, CA (chromatic aberrations) and various other differences. If you're to use two different cameras, you have to make the comparison with the same lens. There are lots of nikon to canon mount adapters out there.
Want to do video? Get canon.
Want to do stills? That's just a matter of taste.
I agree with the fact that the 600D is a bit more sharper than the D5100 but other than that, they're probably the same.
its really hard to tell but it looks like the colors pop just a tad on the canon but both look great
As far as I can see, the Canon 600d appears to add a little more contrast to the picture than the Nikon d5100 at the same settings
dxomark.com rates Nikon D5100 at 80 rating and Canon T3i at 60 ratings. The contrast and colors on this video can be adjusted on the camera, so this video means little other than that its default settings. Canon always look more Video-like and Nikon more natural Film-quality with Sony sensors, but it's all about the lens, so I prefer Nikon lens and Sony sensor over Canon Lens and its own in-house sensor.
another great video to show that canon is better XD
The color is not important, because you can set it. But SHARPER, that is very important, and you can`t fix that in post... Them, I preferer canon!|
canon 600d footage looks better than nikon d5100
I mean like...you DO realize that wind just does its own thing, right? That when he shot it, it was just windy.
@Gabsterboy I think canon still over nikon d5100, but a lot of people dont want accept it!!!
From a personal standpoint, I would recommend the Nikon if you want point-and-shoot video. Just because the record button works in all mode dials, compared to Canon where you have to switch the dial to video mode first before you shoot video. But if you're really into film-making, I would recommend Canon in a heartbeat, because you can change the iso and exposure without having to deal with automated features and the AE-Lock buttons. One of the reasons why I'm switching from my D5100 for a T3i.
Amo la Nikon!
I want see test betwenn d5100 and d7000, please, do it that
@CyberLama95
I think this is a trick for selling the Canon camera -_____-
There are also videos showing that d5100 is shooting better than 600d..
also let me add for serious video work i would not use a dslr due to it using cmos chips which i am not a fan of but for docs and small budjet commercials I would use the Nikon or canon. For serious vdeo production on the budjet I would use ccd Hvx200 or go the higher end if you got the cash and get a varicam. I own six cams and each one has its ups and downs so in reality no clear winner here lol
not really I own both cams and I have to say out of the box Canon wins then later when you tweak you d5100 you can acually get better results i would say about 15-20 percent better. Now over all the canon can monitor sound and apreture on a fly the nikon has a hack that can do apreture but the sound cant be monitored which sux but what kinda sound can u really get on board? I use externals in all my serious video work so for me the cheaper price and the awesome nikor lenses Nikon wins all.
lol i own a nikon d 5100 the cannon look's better and sharper, havent said that i have used my nikon quite a bit lately, and your video of the nikon isnt focused properly. i have dumped the 18 55mm kit lens as i am using a 35mm prime lens and the 18 105mm for video images in hd are very sharp also the 35mm f1.8 it low light is excellnt for video
I am stuck in a rut... you see I almost don't like how crisp the t3i is because ive seen some video's where it looks the color contrast is boosted to much, where as the d5100 has that flat clean look.
the canon is a bit more clear but honestly its not a breathe taking difference the camera's are so similar that its up to you to make a good photo/video.
Why did the credit came over the Nikon side and blur out the whole thing, why not Canon ? your the canon guy eh ?
u didnt explain why its better
you compare how they render flesh tones... live models mixed with architectural please...
I hope that's a joke haha
sorry,,, Canon win!! :(
hey mate. You can take great photos with say the canon 600D. Also you can record with fullHD 1080p. With full manual control over your focus,Aperture, zoom, ISO etc. Really awesome. You may have to pay quite alot of money to get a video camera with a sensor as high in quality as these cams. Also you can change the lenses out easily to suit your needs and there are heaps of attachments, LCD screen, Microphone, frames/mounts, mate boxes etc. You can monitor with earphones aswell. Hope this helps!!!
canon all the way.
Agreed. Same lens used on BOTH cameras would have been more objective.
i really love nikon :))
Well I've seen pretty decent results on it, I know what you mean, AF does not seem perfect, but often its a ''2 inches behing the camera'' symptom. I mean If you keep on moving all the time, yeah it will sometimes search and be fu*ked up , but if you plan to take a video of a subject that doesnt move too much or too quick, seems fine.
I made my choice and went for the 5100 , canon sometimes oversaturate edges and nikon has better high Iso quality.
for video well.. adobe premiere :)
@jamesoliverhuson yea, it is not a fair comment from my self, but understand my point. I find it silly how people try to decide which DSLR camera is best., "FOR FILMING", not so much for taking high quality pictures., you want a combo of two different things in one, then you have dedicated gadgets out there from good companies like, Sony with its Bloggie HD, that can take good stills and VERY good videos (1080 baby!)., now., carrying two gadgets is a pain, but again, the bloggie is a cell size.
Looked the same to me. The main difference between the Canon and Nikon for video quality that will make a hill of beans difference is the Nikon has continuous focus, and the Canon does not. I admit this after just getting the Canon. I believe you can still manually focus on the Canon however...and from a review I saw, the video AF of the Nikon kinda sucks "but at least it tries".
No doubt about it, the T3i has more resolution. Heck, I got the D5100, with a resolution of 2490, the T3i has a resolution of 2550. A difference of only 60. I prefer the Nikon, though & now have 4 Nikon Lenses + the 8mm Bell & Howell Fish-eye(entirely manal). It is the same lens as the 8mm Pro-optic, I think!. I have the 85mm Micro as well. I've been into Fish-Eye for about 4 years. I love the surreal effect. And Bokeh is a new love! I'm not into video. A retired Catholic priest. Thanks.
I just sold my D5100 and bought a 60D last week at a $400 loss, here's why:
D5100 kit lens - 18-55mm 52mm lens; 60D 18-135mm 68mm lens. MUCH better. 60D has a settings screen on the top, full video control, built in leveler, histogram, audio control, white balance in Kelvin, 60fps shooting at 720p - Nikon has none of those. Bottom line: Photos are about the same, but if you shoot video, DO NOT BUY THE D5100, your night shots will look like shit. Spend the extra $200 and get a 60D over a T3i
@ferguido This is a good video, but it doesn't give the full picture. The MAJOR difference between the D5100 and the T3i is that you have full manual control of ISO, shutter speed and aperture with the T3i. You only have aperture control with the D5100. Thus, while these are shot at the same settings, you have a hell of a lot more control of those settings with a Canon. This is coming from a D5100 owner hoping for a firmware update that'll change this!
I disagree... I think neither is sharper.. the Canon is slightly higher contrast and perhaps has more edge enhancement.... but I don't think it's any sharper. As far as something to edit with.. I would pick the Nikon because there is more detail in the shadows and less edge enhancement. Now the question is.. which one is easier to use? Which one can change aperture while recording while mainting the same 1/48the shutter?
They're about identical except the D5100 has a bigger sensor and better low lighting (high ISO) image quality. It's closer to a 7D than a T3i. For video, the T3i has more manual settings, while the D5100 pretty much is all auto except you can hold the Lock button to lock exposure. The D5100 has auto focus during video, but it's not as good as a camcoder's so it's not really a selling point for me. I bought the D5100 for the picture quality and use a Sony camcorder for more demanding video.
Hello there, are you familiar with "Photo SFXart Tricks" (just do a Google search for it...)? There you will find a nice free video showing the best way to create outstanding photos. This helped Joe to take pictures which have that wow-effect while you look at them. Hopefully it will work for you as well.
Hey there, are you familiar with "PhotoSFXart" (search on Google for it)? There you can watch a good free video explaining the way to create incredible pictures. This made it possible for Joe to create pictures that leave you with that jaw-dropping-effect while you look at them. I hope it helps you also...
@tycusX hmm many people own DSLRs these days to take really high quality videos.
I own a canon 600D and I can say that it's video quality can easily outmatch many video cameras, especially in low light situations. Apart from that, with the amount of lenses that DSLRs have, it is much easier to get more artistic shots etc.
oh common, if you want a good camera that can take really good video.., then buy a freaking "video camera"., stop comparing a this kind of stuff over DSLR cameras., even my Sony Bloggy HD can take way better quality video than any of this two.., and even so., i'll buy the Nikon D5100 this summer., BECAUSE IT TAKE REALLY GOOD QUALITY "PICTURES"!
@Victorayde well the only times I use AF is when I have an angle where I cannot see through the viewfinder correctly such as wehn I lay on the drive trying to frame the shot, and there just wasn't enough light to be sure of a good focus (car headlights a bit back) so used AF with flash illumination :) and i don't really do video shooting a lot :)
I plan to buy Canon, but change the idea because of financial problem. Both the cameras are great, but guys see the price also.Canon is much costlier than Nikon(both the compared SLRs).My first choice was Canon, but for the price Nikon does its homework better. Designing, ease of use, pricing etc has speak louder here. Of course Canon is better here, images are sharper, speed is also better,ISO is also higher, that is undeniable, but pricing wise,I'd go for Nikon.
This guy just sucks at taking video with the Nikon d5100. I've seen WAY better quality in other videos shot with a d5100. Also, even in THIS video I think the two are comparable. Canon is obviously slightly better but guess what, the Nikon is like $50-100 cheaper.
Six and half a dozen, especially when you're putting them through sony vegas at the end anyway!
Who in their right mind would buy a DSLR to film video but wouldn't do any post production? Mad.
Also, nikon have autofocus for those informal shoots, that's what won me over.
Alot of people is discussing about, which Canon 600D or Nikon d5100 is the best. If you don't know which to choose, go out to your local photography store, and try out both of them. You can't really see which is the best on RUclips, because it's the matter what you like, not what somebody else likes.
Can you please indicate which lens you used for which camera? Why not use a nikon lens for the nikon camera and a canon lens for the canon camera (same if not similar specs, of course)? Because the differences in IQ may be due to the lens used... just my thoughts...
Autofocus is crappy. It keeps autofocusing, blurring your video even if you dont want that. See some videos out there. No way like SLT-A37. But this DSLR isnt as good as above. Just dont know why :D. Dillema is here wether you go for videos with canon, whether with Nikon for stills. That's the main dillema. :( And i'm started to lean into 600D now for video mostly.
Own a nikon first and speak honestly.I am wondering how depth is your knowledge in this stuffs. Atleast try to do some serious job with these two stuff and share it with us. by the way canon is also unbeatable, while nikon may be also second to none either. It can not be differentiate just as simple as what you see.
@copech If you're anyway serious about video then you'll accept that. The autofocus on the Nikon is not great anyway and adds a noise to the video unless you dont mind covering that up with music. You can actually hold the autofocus (shutter) button on the Canon while recording though and it will focus for you (or so I'm told).
Only reason why canon looks sharper because it is 18 megapixels and the nikon is 16.2 but the features on the d5100 is better than canon i we get the right and the color can be set to vivid or landscape to get the same color tone
@gsus787 depends what you're looking for Nikon for pictures Canon for video.
it's a D-SLR, it's ment to make pictures so my preferrence would go to nikon, but if you're into these models for lots of video... who's gonna stop you.
What do you mean by terrible? I'm using D5100 exclusively for almost 1.5 years now in all of my video production works, and it's extraordinary video machine for the small price. Watch the clip on my channel how to gain the manual control over the video feature.
@AntiAmericanHater To compare the 600d to the D7000 would be like comparing a honda civic to a caddilac sts... The 600d is not in the league of the D7000 in any respect. Having said that, the D5100 has been proven time and time again to provide better still imagery while the 600d is better at video.
You're confusing sharpness for contrast. But as for sharpness itself thats really a test more suited for the lens, but both these videos were shot with 2 very different lenses... a normal prime, and a wide angle zoom.
I have to admit that the canon does give a better video. But nikon takes better pictures and has very awsome features that the canon doesnt have. I've tested both cameras and ended up buying the nikon 5100.
I don't like how people are comparing these two cameras and favoring the Canon T3i because of its video capability. These are DSLR cameras. They are meant for photography. If I cared about video, I'd be getting a camcorder.
@TheSisterPrincess
Canon i sharper, and has a more realistic(and better looking) saturation and contrast. Not to mention the 60 f/ps we have in 720p, and the 30 f/ps we have in 1080p. this video had both cameras on 25f/ps.
@Geoffboyardee i'm a nikon biased owner and i agree, but this is only in terms of video quality, except when it comes to picture quality, nikon definitely wins...but i am proud of canon making quality products...
@simoneim7 no prob with your English. But look at the channel flag and it says "Fenchel and Janisch Filmproduktion" which means that this channel mainly deals with filmography! check out other channels for photos! oh and btw, I prefer the 600D...:D
@thkkud you obviously don't know what you're talking about. video at the same resolution, is going to have the same physical resolution no matter how many megapixels the sensor is for taking photos.
It's really hard to tell. Most of the time you won't notice the difference, I would have not noticed the difference if i were not seriously paying attention to which is better. But Canon looks sharper
well canon seems tobe a little better.... but i don't really care for videos... but for photos.... That's why you buy a dslr, to take photos..... i f you want a video, then buy a sony videocamera....
It is nearly no difference.....
The only difference that I notice is Canon have a bit higher contrast to Nikon.
Sorry canon fanboy, looks like video mode in Nikon reach same level as Canon.
Right its as simple as this really. The Nikon is best for photos and the Canon for video. Whats more important to me? Video. What will I get? Eh.. the Canon (maybe the 650D when it releases in less than two weeks time).
nikon d5100 has a limit of 20mins (30minutes for canon 600d) or 4gb per video clip (whichever limit is reached first) regardless of resolution, frame rate, and memory card size.
Unfortunately, they were meant to be Mirror-cameras. Did you know you can only record 15 minute videos on a 600D? After that, your camera might get damaged. Exactly, that's what I thought!
very very close in my opinion but I thought the Canon looked a wee bit sharper in some of the details like grass and dirt. For video I don't think one could go wrong either way.
but what could be better in PHOTOGRAFY?!! Iike you say! I like the 600d contrast but is the same in photography?! please help me cause Im debating wich to buy a: d5100 or 600dt3i
@copech true. But it has more frame choices, Both full HD are 30 max, but it has 60 for HD ready, Nikon doesn't have 30, Not a big deal I think If you not into movie making for editing.
I would say that the only thing that changes is contrast... Can you set it on the Nikon D5100? Because I prefer the Canon's contrast. Sharpness depends on the lens, doesn't it?
the canon doesn't look like it has more "detail" it just has more sharpness and contrast which I can easily add in or adjust to my liking with professional video editing software.
@Dagamster2345 As a jogger you don't want to stand still for a traffic light, so you keep moving. The pole is not in front of him but to the side, you can't really tell the depth.
looks sooo close. think id go with canon though. does anyone know wheres the cheapest place to get lenses. at a reveiwer a 18-135 is crucial but only 14 and that thijg is frickin expensive
Canon >
@simoneim7 I don't know why, but I think it's cute that you try to speak english. Don't worry! We still understand. BTW, there are many videos here on RUclips just comparing pictures.
It looks like the Canon is better... but its a pretty poor comparison because the moving subjects and elements(wind) are not always the same in each clip.
why
@simoneim7 Because Alot of filmakers are using the DSLR's for film making now. There are other video's that show you still photos. So go find them.
Just bump up the sharpness, contrast and saturation on your Nikon's picture control setting and you'll be in Canon's territory. What's the big deal!
The Canon does seem to have better contrast or focus or whatever that is, but Nikon's build in intervalometer with no need for a laptop does it for me.
I don't have an optical eye for video as much as I do photography, but it looked like it was a tie in some parts and in others one be the other.
@omnimoeish You Can't tell the diffrence? You need better eyes then. The image is much sharper with the Canon. It's right there in front of you.
well here the canon does have the better video, so its just a matter of is video or photos more important to you out of your DSLR....your choice
The only difference is that Canons have more sharpening applied by default. Same refers to still imaging (where d5100 outperforms 600d IMHO).
I probably thought this because since they say The Nikon D5100 doesnt have much manual control in movie mode, but thanks for correcting me.
You should not compare quality this way. You must capture the scenes at the same time of the day... sorry but this will not really help.
the quality are the same but the canon got higher contrast but i would go for the nikon becouse i like nikon more and are more used to nikon
Very close in comparison... I say the Canon was crisper in some areas and then a tie in others. (like the portrait mode on the fence)
can somebody tell me WHERE is the difference? why some people say that CANON is better? even If I pause the video.. I see the same..
Deffinetly the Nikon d5100 on the left is much better for after processing. the canons video is to tricky in post production.
But think about this, with the Nikon, if i am correct, you can not Do manual focus while in movie mode, so whats the point?
I can see that the Canon photos are sharper and clearer, by a little bit. You have to play it many times to really be sure.
stop fighting both look excellent and besides nikon cameras always like to keep images a little soft. It's a personal preference
I'll give it to the Canon, colors look just a tad more vibrant... but is this a who's got more contrast kind of perspective?
