It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

India is in Critical need for population Control . Large Indian Cities are Grossly over populated , creating a Bio Hazard .
it seems they buy them out whether the want or not to move to the outskirts where the leopards hunt . Not admirable .
Crazy how Greater Tokyo has more people and is clean and orderly culture makes a difference
💯 % . It's more than culture. Know what I mean 😏
No I don’t, can you elaborate?
Its not just culture, you also need proper infrastructure to support cleanliness. Proper sewage, garbage disposal available bathrooms with running water.
not just culture LMAO
Its more about which one have more money rather than the culture. Japan got massive backup to rebuild after ww2. Without help from the outside, you have to take really drastic measures to advance on that short time period. Like china for example. which if fail, million will die. Which also did happen few times in china
I went to India in 1998. The population, slums, traffic, trains, etc. were shocking, to say the least. Seeing it in person will change you forever. My heart breaks for the impoverished people there. Despite all the craziness, most people were very kind. The food was amazing, and there was a lot of beauty, culture, and history to take in. Cheers to the man working on train safety and the leopard caretakers. I hope the big business stops forcing the slums encroachment into leopard territory ! ✌️ ☮️ 🇮🇳
My husband and I were there also around this time, never saw so many beautiful people even the poor street people.

Developers are the same everywhere - here in Europe, they're "clearing" fields and parks, in Mumbay, they're "clearing" homes of the poor :I
There's enough resources for all humans to have basic needs but we're the most narcissistic and selfish species
Its the same here in the US, developers either buy out large amounts of farmland to build cookie cutter suburbs or go into low income areas in cities to buy gentrify the area with "luxury apartments" which, off topic is comedic because the luxury apartments are usually standard apartments but with a higher rent than usual
@glucen4408 it is comedic, I accidentally grew up in a communist block of flats, then moved to a newly built building...I couldn't hear the neighbors in the old building, while here I can hear them pacing on the other side of the wall 😂 but as long as people tolerate it and pay for it..

Toronto Canada is starting to look like this unfortunately...
Can confirm, lived there for a while. Nice place but like UK it's being changed beyond recognition for the worst by governments pretending they're trying to control immigration whilst taking actions that encourage it. Wokeists are the useful idiots that enable it also.
@@10aDowningStreet "wokes are useful idiots" nothing more accurate could've been said. They will make western countries worse than third world ones
There should be capacity limits to cities. Toronto was gorgeous when I was young. This is not progress….from Ottawa
The real slum lord! I met a man named Amit about 25 years ago and he told me that the people in India that could speak English in their call centers actually made more money than the doctors who lived there. That was unbelievable and sad.
a few years ago, China passed a law by which a family was not allowed to have more than 2 children. if India does not do the same, they will step on each other. it's about education.. knowing that you have no possibility to raise them, how can you have 10 children? they will end up as poor and without school as their parents.
you are a couple decades late. China has a 1 child policy since the 80s, a couple years ago increase to 2, then now up to 3. However, this time they even get incentive to have MORE children yet no one is having them.
As a introvert combat vet with severe ptsd I would lose my mind there completely!😂
While it is not the responsibility or obligation of the rich to help the poor, it would be nice if they did. In a country where a wealthy businessman can spend 1 billion to build a mansion and 100 million can be spent on a wedding, the chasm between rich and poor is so wide.
The top 10 billion and trillionaires could, by their wealth alone, solve world hunger, water access and homelessness. Not to western standards of course but 99% of humanity could have adequate shelters, drinking water and a sustainable diet. Instead they fund wars, weapons and self-interest - who the hell really needs a $20+ million yacht or 42 luxury cars?
actually, it would be good if everyone could afford a decent home, decent food and education and not being hopeful some rich person will be charitable.
@@FreeDocumentary …in order to achieve that, they have to stop having children that they can’t adequately care for. Because the kids are the ones who suffer most.

I’m fascinated by how you showcased the diverse lifestyles of people in this documentary. For example, the one who started with 100 rupees and the one who inherited a family business. It’s a great reminder that not everyone starts from the same place. People say hard work and hustle create dream lives, but they forget the unequal starting points. The scene where businessmen saw slums as land to profit from, while thousands of people were living, working, and dreaming there, really stayed with me. This was one of the most beautiful documentaries I’ve ever seen. Thank you, so much

These are the real problems of the common man in India. Literally, nobody cares about this BS Democracy vs Dictator debate. People want someone to solve the day-to-day problems they face; it doesn't matter even if it is solved by a so-called dictator.
More than a billion people are living there an still they're not capable of changing the government!!!
Its ok to build these high rise buildings, what happens to those people who was living in the slum?
They get free apartments, but they still complain about it 🙄
The rich is entitled because they pay for it but the poor is given free but still demand more . No surprise given more things it’s just an excuse for them to comfortably breed more. Besides giving them nice things are useless they won’t be appreciative and like they say u can’t get the slums mentality out of them
If birth rates are not controlled, the future could be dire, particularly in India, where the population is rapidly increasing.

The railway system is just a moving death trap and how people are packed in those carriages like animals with not one thaught about safety is just unbelievable 🥵. But i do have alot of respect for those that work so hard in life to achieve: From poverty to Rich and it does prove that those who want to achieve things in life can by getting up and working hard. At the risk of sounding pretentious Maybe they should start with the little things . Maybe its not in their culture to just pick up the trash in your yard but it should be . People just toss their garbage where ever. They just step over litter. Make a point of keeping your spot clean and the rest will follow.
It's quite funny that in documentaries set in India where Bollywood is mentioned, they often only showcase dance sequences from the film "Bride and Prejudice," even though it's not a Bollywood movie but rather a British-American production.
Lifelong dream of mine is to never visit India.

Is this for real? How can they have 7 deaths per day on the railway and not do anything about it? It doesn't even make sense! Isn't it easier to install doors on the trains than deal with 7 dead bodies per day?
You'd think the government would add another bunch of passenger trains.
Indian people are incredibly resourceful, and they smile.

The Poor leopards have had their habitat invaded , by a Grossly over populated area . Since the Leopards don't breed like Mice as these Indians do , they will be extinct soon.

So he destroys the slums and replaces them with high rises. Question: where do the people who live in that slum go?? Can they afford an apartment in this new tower?? The answer is NO. So where do they go...they move somewhere else and rebuild the slum. This country is a sespool and human rights nightmare. Class system is old and needs to be abolished. All Indians should have the same option.

The train, India’s apex predator.
I visited Mumbai last year, so exciting, scary, welcoming. I loved it but came out traumatised!
The government should look for alternative transport solutions or increase the number and security of the railways. The estate developers should have a real dialogue with all the representatives of the slums for proper compensation before they move them. Since they may bribe the government to ignore.
Amazing documentary, watching the urbanization of a country is rather fascinating, there are many countries specifically in SE Asia that are developing rapidly, India still has a long long ways to go. But India can someday overtake China and become the number 2 economy in the world if they focus on investor friendly policies.

Are they feeding the dogs to the leopard ?? I think that poor black dog was killed. What a wicked town. Humans have been invasive to the Natural habitat of these Wild creatures, also destroying Nature, mountains, polluting rivers, & competing, depleting their foods.
You need to develop more Cities outside of Mumbai and away from the forestry reserves, so poor people will find opportunities outside and not over-populate a limited land resource for humans & creatures.
Well tbh the dog didn't have a good survival instinct. It just kept lying there while the leopard got closer and closer.

In the gulf states they need Laborer, streets sweepers, toilet cleaners. In Africa plantation workers and other menial jobs are paying better. Therefore these folks should be send to these countries to have a better salary and contribute to India economic growth.
In the gulf they are treated as slave labour and have their passports taken from them so they can't leave after months and years of not being paid. They are beaten and abused and kept in very poor overcrowded conditions. There are few if any safety conditions in their work places. In Dubai labourers fall from those tall buildings every day. They die of heat stroke and malnutrition and don't even have enough water to drink or bathe in. They often go without food.
Africa doesn't need menial or plantation workers as they're looking for their youth to leave too. That aside, Indians in Africa are living their best lives so should consider migrating there to invest
