Extreme India - Cow Vigilantes, Disabled Dating & More: • Extreme India: Cow Vig...
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

I went to India in 1998. The population, slums, traffic, trains, etc. were shocking, to say the least. Seeing it in person will change you forever. My heart breaks for the impoverished people there. Despite all the craziness, most people were very kind. The food was amazing, and there was a lot of beauty, culture, and history to take in. Cheers to the man working on train safety and the leopard caretakers. I hope the big business stops forcing the slums encroachment into leopard territory ! ✌️ ☮️ 🇮🇳

Are they feeding the dogs to the leopard ?? I think that poor black dog was killed. What a wicked town. Humans have been invasive to the Natural habitat of these Wild creatures, also destroying Nature, mountains, polluting rivers, & competing, depleting their foods.
You need to develop more Cities outside of Mumbai and away from the forestry reserves, so poor people will find opportunities outside and not over-populate a limited land resource for humans & creatures.

Well tbh the dog didn't have a good survival instinct. It just kept lying there while the leopard got closer and closer.

They need the one child rule like they had in China or else these issues will never be resolved. And whoever can afford it should leave bringing as many family members with them as possible. The Indian community in the US does very well, it seems. Meaning they could maintain a connection to their culture without actually living in India.

The government should look for alternative transport solutions or increase the number and security of the railways. The estate developers should have a real dialogue with all the representatives of the slums for proper compensation before they move them. Since they may bribe the government to ignore.

It isnt the train operator's fault that people insist on hanging onto windows and putting THEMSELVES at risk. If they have to be told not to cling on half in and half out then they really must not care about there own lives .I WONDER HOW MANY OF THEM ACTUALLY PAY FOR TICKETS BECAUSE IMAGINE TRYING TO REMEMBER WHOS ALLREADY GIVEN YOU A TICKET AND WHO HASNT PAID YET .BY THE TIME YOU FIGHT YOUR WAY TO THE END OF A SINGLE CSRRIAGE THE PEOPLE WILL HAVE ALLREADY GOT OFF AT THEIR STOP. 😂😂

Feel sorry for the ppl in slums. It’s. A huge man power which India can use to its advantage, just like china. India should have industrial zones and hire them all and produce its own products and compete with china. This is not a crisis but an opportunity if the rulers in india can sincerely see

There will always be poverty, there will always be slum areas, it’s happened for hundreds of years,we didn’t stop it then and we won’t stop it now even in 2024 it’s what man does because we can’t help ourselves.
